It is very surprising to choose a name taken from the family you have just called ‘racist’ on the global stage I must say…..

Still I am sure it was a good move to secure the connection and $$$$$$

But it's not at all unusual to give your child your Grandmother's name

Twiglets1 · 15/01/2024 16:04

I don't like that couple but surely they can call their baby what they want

There are literally thousands of names they could have chosen.
Their behaviour was exploitative and abhorrent.

Why is Harry Harry his name is Henry

Why is meghan meghan her name is Rachel ( I prefer Rachel tbh)

If I remember correctly , it was thought that Harry wasn’t regal enough ? Remember this was back in the 1980s so things were slightly different .

No idea why Meghan doesn’t use Rachel ( I agree it’s a nicer name) but maybe she liked the alliteration?

Apparently Beatrice was supposed to be called Annabelle but the Queen said that she didn't like it. I think she might have been the one to suggest Beatrice.

Her name was Elizabeth.
Why choose a family name used by only a few people.
The Queen had very little privacy, even as she was dying of cancer this ghastly exploitative pair had to ruin her final years.

Mylovelygreendress · 15/01/2024 18:37

I also seem to recall ( I am old!) that there were raised eyebrows about Zara’s name .

MaturingCheeseball · 15/01/2024 18:37

Well, over my dead body would my dd be named after mil - and she wasn’t even head of a racist family… There are a million at least names in the world, and they selected Lilibet?

Apparently also trademarked was Diana as a first name. I wonder why they didn’t opt for this, as now Lilibet would be “Princess Diana”.

x2boys · 15/01/2024 18:38

EncantoSpice · 15/01/2024 16:35

If they were calling her Elizabeth or Lizzie or something I don’t think it would matter, but it was so personal - Harry himself wasn’t on “Lilibet” terms with the Queen! Plus them not being on good terms made it seem very cynical.

Well no I imagine he called her Granny or Grandma or some other Grandmother name
I wasn't on first name terms with any of my Grandparents either

You may well have answerted your own question.

😂

Such a common name in history and all over the internet that Harry and Meghan themselves say they asked for the Queen's blessing (which is the whole point of this story - she didn't give it). Why would they do that for a common or garden name?

I'm off to teach my group of young ladies now. There are at least 3 new Lillibets starting tonight, not sure I'm going to be able to tell them apart!

😂

SilkFloss · 15/01/2024 18:38

Blimey! This thread!
Filled with posts by people who think they're so superior decrying the Daily Mail when it's not "their" story at all, but the serialisation of a biography by a highly-respected author. Does it make you feel better to wilfully misunderstand that in order to take a pop at the DM?
Not to mention we're still getting people banging on about the wrong reason for the Queen's alleged anger.
Ffs read things properly.

stillavid · 15/01/2024 18:39

@Mylovelygreendress I am also old and recall that too.

Harry must have known that calling his DD Lilibet would be controversial especially at that particular time. Hopefully he did it with the best of intentions though.

Harry is Welsh for Henry. Henry VIII went by Harry amongst his close friends.

MaturingCheeseball · 15/01/2024 18:41

I am old too! I seem to recall that Zara means “princess” and that’s why they chose it.

Maireas · 15/01/2024 18:42

I read that Diana really liked the name Harry, but the family thought it wasn't formal enough so his baptismal name is Henry, thus pleasing everyone.

MalagaNights · 15/01/2024 18:42

I think being furious when your grandson who has publicly accused the family of racism, then uses a name very personal to you, and then tells everyone you are raelly happy he did, even though you're not, and then tells you to tell the press you are happy about it.

I think I might say Fuck Off. But I doubt the Queen did.

But not suprising lose her cool. It's not about the name it's about respect, kindness, thoughtfulness, and unedrstanding your impact on others.

All things H&M talk about a lot but seem devoid of. They are utterly self absorbed. I'm sure they don't understand why the queen was hurt becuase they can only think of themselves.

MaturingCheeseball · 15/01/2024 18:43

@silkfloss I am always bemused at the intimate familiarity all the Daily Mail haters have with every single column inch of the publication…

Is that a joke or are you being coy 😉

Said ‘beloved’ grandmother was called a racist and they were not on speaking terms at the time. Why in god’s name would anyone choose to name their child after a person in those circumstances?!

It was clearly done to provoke outcry and attention or for profit. Or both ideally.

I feel sorry for the child, she is her own person and doesn’t deserve to be at the centre of this psycho drama.

Wwll.yeah she was the Queen she was greeting Luz Truss two days before she died
Anyway it's all speculation and a load of shit stirring .

SomeCatFromJapan · 15/01/2024 18:46

If I'd fallen out with a relative and they then used my childhood nickname for their baby I'd be both irritated and find it the height of cringe.

ReadingSoManyThreads · 15/01/2024 18:47

MerryMarigold · 15/01/2024 16:29

Why is it rude? I would be delighted if a relative gave their child a diminutive of my name? I can't see the queen being bothered really.

Like a PP said : distraction from dodgy Andrew.

You can't see her being bothered? When her husband died, she told those close to her that she didn't want anyone else to ever call her Lilibet. That name meant so much to her and now that she'd lost her husband, father, sister and those who used to call her it, she didn't want it to be used anymore.

For those two to then use it under those circumstances was awful.

They told her they wanted to name baby after her, and like anyone, she thought that meant Elizabeth, not her very private nickname.

Actually they said the Queen wasn't racist
And how do you know hey were not on speaking terms did she tell you ?

stillavid · 15/01/2024 18:25

I may be totally wrong but thought that Kate and William had to get permission for the actual names of their children?

I don't know if this is still done, but it's widely reported that George VI/Elizabeth had to change the Anne they wanted to Margaret so presumably it was once?

Somehow, though, I can't see W&K ever having chosen anything "unsafe"
