Sadly can't read it @mrsmingleton , can you give me the gist?

mrsmingleton · 14/01/2024 17:25

Defence chiefs lashed out at the decision to recognise the Duke ahead of other contenders, such as Tim Peake, the first British astronaut to walk in space.
Admiral Lord West, former head of the Royal Navy, said: “He is not a living legend of aviation. To suggest he is, is pathetic.
“It makes the whole thing seem a bit of a nonsense if they’re willing to pick someone like Prince Harry.
“He is not a living legend. There are lots of people who deserve to be called this but not Prince Harry.
“I find it extraordinary he has been picked. He didn’t carry off any great exciting feat of amazing flying skill while flying for the Army.”
The former First Sea Lord told MailOnline: “They’re just trying to get publicity. They know it will cause a stir. I find the whole thing really rather pathetic.”
Celebrity inductees include Harrison Ford, Morgan Freeman and Tom Cruise.
Retired British Army Colonel Richard Kemp said the awards were about “celebrities massaging each other’s egos.”

Thanks @mrsmingleton 👍 , well they didn't sugar coat it did they! 🤣

FloofCloud · 14/01/2024 17:34

Celebrities massaging each others egos sums it up really lol - let's hope those aviators with any kudos refuse to attend or accept

Honestly it's more embarrassing that 'Defence chiefs ' are wasting their time getting their knickers in a twist about an award given to Prince Harry that has also been given to someone who played a fighter pilot in a film!

what they are meaning is that it is all meaningless and a bit silly, so Tom cruise goes without saying hasn't donemuch exceptfly his own jet in a film. its just a rich person's folly really.

It would be even more meaningless if they didn't respond to the Daily Mail request for a quote., and contributed to them making a massive deal out of an obscure and frankly silly award, giving Harry exactly what he wants apparently. To distract attention from his family's love of paedophiles.

notimagain · 14/01/2024 17:48

Lord West is a former “defence chief” and since he’s seems to have been on speed dial with folks at BBC and Sky since the day he retired I don’t think he has any grounds to grumble about other people “trying to get publicity”…

At least the award winnner who played a fighter pilot in a film (Cruise) still owns and flies his own aircraft…

Harry seems to have hung up the headset years ago.

Edited

Being a rich actor who can afford to fly his own jet doesnt make you a living legend of aviation either!

Mymilkshakebringsallthepapstomycar · 14/01/2024 17:51

'Defence chiefs '

Why the inverted commas? They are top brass in the armed forces. Harry's army career was pretty much the last thing about him that garnered him any respect. I don't think incurring the disdain of military chiefs is embarrassing for anyone other than Harry and his stupid advisors.

FloofCloud · 14/01/2024 17:56

@Angrycat2768 - it's probably as they're bringing the British army / forces into an awards ceremony yet
Cherry picking a person who doesn't deserve any awards for something that could be protested as that being acceptable by the forces ... so they're saying it's not acceptable - which I think is reasonable considering he's done nothing ton deserve this

Uricon2 · 14/01/2024 17:56

Serious question. Does anyone posting here actually think that Harry is "a living legend of aviation"?

If the answer is yes, I'd be genuinely interested to know why.

Well commas or not Lord West and others quoted are not defence chiefs.

The fact Tom Cruise is an honoree seems to be hitting a few nerves but at the end of the day he has a long lasting and continuing connection with aviation and is still a current pilot..

FWIW the general feeling in aviation circles seems to be that if PH had any sense he would politely decline to accept the award.

It's an 'Of course not' from me

jeffgoldblum · 14/01/2024 18:10

Definitely not ! A legend in his own mind perhaps! , but definitely not to me or anyone who isn't a sycophant.

Completely agree but some people seem to think that those of us saying this is a load of nonsense are unreasonable and I would really like to know why. I'm not sure there will be any convincing answers, TBH.
