Happy Birthday, Spare!

It’s the one year anniversary of the release of Spare, how are you all celebrating?!

In all seriousness, a year on what impact do you think the book has had on the Royal Family and the Sussexes?

In my opinion it clearly did very well commercially but in popular culture it became a bit of a joke. In terms of the RF I’m not sure it made much difference - to people who already didn’t like them it confirmed what they already believed, to people who did like them it was more evidence that Harry was no loss. I also think even a year later it has made reconciliation between William and Harry impossible.

Very little impact in my opinion. I read it, learned more about his genitals than I ever wanted to know, moved on. Didn't really tell me much that I didn't already know about the royal family

derxa · 10/01/2024 12:43

I’ve not read it. The impact on me was that it confirmed that Harry is incredibly spiteful and petty. This is from extracts I’ve read.

Samcro · 10/01/2024 12:51

not read it. so can't judge a book I have not read.

Viviennemary · 10/01/2024 12:57

All the furore has died down. It's yesterday's news. So will the pair lead a quiet life now or will they come up with a new attention seeking project. And they will again be in the headlines. Time will tell.

PopNotPolitics · 10/01/2024 12:58

The book is part of a 4-book deal, isn't it?

When are the other books coming and what will they be about?

Rockybooboo · 10/01/2024 13:07

I read it and thought it interesting. I don't what was petty and spiteful. He was very sweet about his grandma and he acknowledges his dad tried his best as a parent. He has his whole life under scrutiny and loads of other people have made money off him so good for him for telling his side. He adores his wife and kids.

CoffeeCantata · 10/01/2024 13:10

I wouldn't buy it on principle - I'm not putting money into Harry's pocket. But I've read bits online, of course. Lots to regret: the nasty remarks about the school nurse, the Taliban chess comments, the accounts of ludicrous behaviour and an entitled, resentful attitude to life.

It's beyond embarrassing. What was he/she thinking? I can't see any way back now, with their so-called royal connection is pretty much eroded. What else have they got to offer?

Last year truly made them a laughing stock and it can only get worse.

I'm reading it at the moment. Finding it pretty dull and confirming my view that he has no self-awareness. As confirmed in this extract...

I don't think it was reputation-enhancing for the Duke

To be fair he won't have any self awareness coming from that family. They're a horrible bunch of people with theiiconnections to sex offenders . Sham marriages and showing off their riches whilst children in their country go hungry.

Oh my... just added this to my watch list! I love a good parody.

Roussette · 10/01/2024 16:21

I read it. OP have you?

You've started a thread on it after all, so presume you have.

Those who only picked up the DM headlines on it haven't a clue as they haven't read it.

Yes

Good to hear.

I found it interesting in parts, boring in parts, and not full of salacious gossip as those who haven't read it seem to think.

Weird how he says her 'disappearance' rather than death.

I only read the excerpts posted here when it was leaked. It sounded dull and not really revealing anything new about him or the family. I found the Courtiers book excerpts more interesting for behind the scenes stuff. I think he's realised he's overstepped which is why he's gone quieter, which will be the only way back into the fold tbh. I also think Meghan realised how bad it was which is why she distanced herself even when it was still being written. Smart woman.
