Happy Birthday, Spare!

It’s the one year anniversary of the release of Spare, how are you all celebrating?!

In all seriousness, a year on what impact do you think the book has had on the Royal Family and the Sussexes?

In my opinion it clearly did very well commercially but in popular culture it became a bit of a joke. In terms of the RF I’m not sure it made much difference - to people who already didn’t like them it confirmed what they already believed, to people who did like them it was more evidence that Harry was no loss. I also think even a year later it has made reconciliation between William and Harry impossible.

It doesn't alarm people, because since this book, I do not think people place any reliance on what Harry says. His recollections do not add up with verifiable events (eg he says he was in school when it can easily be demonstrated that he was on holiday)

So here we have to rely on both his recollection of what happened and/or what was said and in addition, accept his interpretation.

I don't think that the overall reliability of his narration is such that we can be sure that any of it happened as he said (though it must of course be very real to him)

Well maybe some people.

I don't have issue with him. I find him to be very consistent with where his line is. He puts his money where his mouth is and he fights for what he believes in.

His wife, his children, and their dignity.

His right to defend himself and them in the absense of support from the palace.

His fight with the papers which I personally view as a public service.

It clearly back fired. The royal family have went from strength to strength since the queen passed, and are arguably more popular now

harry is very much derided for the book, due to the level of pettiness and spite , breach of privacy, against his family, and the fact he did it for so much money, and other than this and his interviews, has failed to thrive, to do anything in terms of a career.

if he’d made a succsssful career, or been known for charity works , he likely could have got away with doing it later, but on top of the Oprah interview, the Netflix docu, and all the missteps they both have taken, it has simply back fired on him.

Are they more popular? Where do you get your sources?

Who's called you lousy?

It clearly back fired. The royal family have went from strength to strength since the queen passed, and are arguably more popular now

So.... all these are strengths are they?

Charles' tantrums about the pen, the staff etc. In the context of his lawyers actively seeking people dying intestate in the duchies in order to keep their cash and assets.

Camilla's enduring friendship with scummy journalists (Piers, Jeremy)

Andrew's ongoing debacle re involvement with seedy, serious criminals

Kate's damp squib life's work to let us know how important the early years are

William's cringe... pictures with underpivileged people, grand declarations that he will end homelessness, pretending to serve burgers to a handpicked audience in a closed street, refusing to travel to the women's football world cup final because climate change, then travelling a similar distance to give out climate change prizes...

In the meantime Harry has carried out with the Invictus game and (together with dozens of other victims) his court battle against illegal and immoral press practices. Like a pp I consider the latter a public service. I haven't heard much about Meghan so I imagine she is living her best life in peace with her two kids.

Please tell me what I'm missing

Who are you referring to? You keep putting these comments but vague about who you're addressing.

Samcro · 12/01/2024 09:29

@Getthethrowonthesofa with who?

its interesting to read posts from people who actually read the whole book.

OK @Getthethrowonthesofa I'll argue, as you say 'arguably'. Absolutely disagree. And polls show falling support (not that I believe polls totally). The feeling I get is tolerating them as opposed to supporting them out and out. If you have any proof that they are going from strength to strength, I would be very interested. I don't see it

Well there has been multiple yougov polls and my own perception from the comments on all forms of media . Are you upset or something they haven’t been damaged? I’ve never read anything where someone goes so far as to ask you to evidence popularity.

Roussette · 12/01/2024 09:43

You must be reading different yougov polls to me then. No, they are not dropping like a stone in popularity, but it is shaky

I’ve no idea what’s happening here, I don’t wish to argue, I understood this was a public forum and I could post my opinion

please argue with someone else. I understand fully you’re taking on anyone who feels it’s been negative for Harry, but leave me out, as I don’t understand your position, other than to recognise you’re a super fan who feels it’s their job to police any comments where anyone feels they have behaved negatively.

Roussette · 12/01/2024 09:46

Please show me where I said 'you cannot post your opinion'. And where I have 'policed'.

I have a different opinion to you. I am on a discussion forum and discussing.

And I would be grateful if you would stop being personal and calling me a superfan. I don't call you anything.

Why do you have to be a super Fan to ask where you get your information from. In the light of Prince Andrew, I'd be very disappointed if the RoyAl family were getting more popular.

You are allowed to express an opinion and we are allowed to disagree.

Did he want to endear himself to the masses or just get his story out?

The Royal have always been the butt of jokes. It's not just Harry.

I thought he came across ok. Not whiney at all.

Roussette · 12/01/2024 10:22

I think he wanted to get his side out, enough other people have made money from articles and books about him.
And I also think with the MNG trial and others coming up, he knew the media would bring up anything literally anything to besmirch him, so he told the stories in his book, giving them no ammo. Quite clever really
