Happy Birthday, Spare!

It’s the one year anniversary of the release of Spare, how are you all celebrating?!

In all seriousness, a year on what impact do you think the book has had on the Royal Family and the Sussexes?

In my opinion it clearly did very well commercially but in popular culture it became a bit of a joke. In terms of the RF I’m not sure it made much difference - to people who already didn’t like them it confirmed what they already believed, to people who did like them it was more evidence that Harry was no loss. I also think even a year later it has made reconciliation between William and Harry impossible.

Go H&M!

Perhaps they should.

CathyorClaire · 18/01/2024 11:19

It doesn’t sound especially lucrative.

Really?

£100k a year for two phone calls and four personal appearances?

If only we all had royal connections to milk for a pittance.

How do you know that’s all that was done?

Roussette · 18/01/2024 06:42

Not sure why anyone related to the RF but not in an active role needs to explain anything about business deals (unless it involves selling access.)

Good to hear H&M can do what they want as far as business deals, less criticism on MN hopefully now

Never going to happen, I mean Harry is being heavily criticised for wearing a coat and hat yesterday never mind a business deal. The audacity of him 🙄

That eyeroll wasn't at you @Roussette

Where is that?

thisiswheretheseagullfliesaway · 18/01/2024 15:27

Daily Mail

CathyorClaire · 18/01/2024 16:05

How do you know that’s all that was done?

It's nearly at the beginning of the article I posted.

Did you read it?

Only you got the salary muddled with Fergie's as well as missing that.

AliceOlive · 18/01/2024 16:17

No, it was daily mail so I only skimmed.

I don’t really care about it. I think it looks like an Olympic athlete with knowledge of horses is working for a guy who is building a business involved with horses.

But I’m American. We have Hunter Biden sleeping with his dead brother’s wife, shooting up crack and heroin, paying women for sex, all while doing business with energy companies in china and Ukraine. He did this while threatening them with the wrath of “The Big Guy”. No one here who voted for “The Big Guy” gives two thoughts about it, even when TBG was caught wreaking revenge with the full power of the White House on anyone that gets in the way.

Horse business sounds really nice!

Was it at anyone using the daily mail as a source of info about what Harry is doing?

Ridemeginger · 18/01/2024 16:23

@AliceOlive Have you been following the Matt Tiabbi/ Michael Shellenberger/Twitter files and the stuff about Hunter Biden?

CathyorClaire · 18/01/2024 16:27

I don’t really care about it.

Just the way the royals like it 🙂

Roussette · 18/01/2024 16:40

The building may have had the look of Buckingham Palace but it wasn't BP. I'm sure he's been served drinks by servants

If you've seen the advert you really couldn't post this with a straight face. Footmen with uniform and a Palace not a "building"

Puzzledandpissedoff · 18/01/2024 17:05

Umm... so the fact he was filmed in front of a Palace which had the look of BuckinghamP, and was served milk by a footman inside a Palace had nothing to do with his position?!

You forgot to mention the Patrons' Lunch, Roussette; £750k pocketed by Peter Phillips and £384k gross raised for the charities, all on a deal which never went out to tender

And that's before tax and unknown expenses were deducted from it ...

I think you vastly overestimate the importance of one woman in America.

But thank you!

Not really. It’s all so nauseating.

Was that gross or net? What were the expenses?

Ah well. It's all a bit of a mess. Trump may well swing it again.

AliceOlive · 18/01/2024 17:32

According to the BBC the £384k was before tax, hence my use of "gross"

And I'm not aware what expenses if any were deducted - unless anyone has further information? - but would be extremely surprised if there weren't any

Amusingly the BBC also claimed the amount given to charities matched the £750k Peter Phillips pocketed because of "other donations", though I've seen neither proof of this nor any indication that they've not just "borrowed" unrelated gifts to make it all sound better

Peter Phillips

Peter Phillips' company was paid £750,000 for Queen's party

Peter Phillips' company organised the Patron's Lunch for the Queen's 90th birthday last year.

AliceOlive · 18/01/2024 17:55

The article says he made no profit. 🤷‍♀️

“Sir Stuart Etherington, chairman of the Patron's Fund charity, which had ultimate control of the event and awarded the contract to SEL UK, defended the payment.

He said something on the lunch's scale could not be run without incurring some costs and Mr Phillips' company had made no profit.”

Puzzledandpissedoff · 18/01/2024 17:59

I know what it said, AliceOlive, and am also aware that when it comes to the RF many things are claimed, with the figures fudged to suit

I'd have thought that just the fact this never went to tender would be enough of a red flag, but respect that not everyone will feel this way

AliceOlive · 18/01/2024 18:43

Pardon me for thinking if you take your news from a source then you take your news from that source.

  • PP hand an idea idea for a fundraiser
  • Numbers were deemed competitive
  • PP Firm said to have not made a profit
  • Charities got £750K from tickets and donations they would not have otherwise had.
  • Expenses were reimbursed

This is how fundraisers often work. People throw parties, other people buy tickets to attend and some also give donations.

Also nauseating. Hoping they both drop out.

Roussette

True - they did.
One of my more feeble attempts at being mildly amusing.
