Happy Birthday, Spare!

It’s the one year anniversary of the release of Spare, how are you all celebrating?!

In all seriousness, a year on what impact do you think the book has had on the Royal Family and the Sussexes?

In my opinion it clearly did very well commercially but in popular culture it became a bit of a joke. In terms of the RF I’m not sure it made much difference - to people who already didn’t like them it confirmed what they already believed, to people who did like them it was more evidence that Harry was no loss. I also think even a year later it has made reconciliation between William and Harry impossible.

Why do you care. You don't like him.

Well exactly. But one thing I do know.... if we are reduced to criticising Harry for not being nominated for something, that illustrates he's doing OK and getting on with his life, because it's really scraping the barrel and is just DM/Express clickbait.

Ridemeginger · 11/01/2024 08:05

Like I said, I am interested in the process, and as a best selling author of a self narrated audio biography, he should be nominated. As it is, I've looked it up, and I think he was not actually eligible for 2023 because his book wasn't released in the relevant period, but he will be for the 2024 awards.

You can both get down from your high horses now.

EdithWeston · 11/01/2024 08:18

People have posted positively about Meghan's awards, and those of Suits (though not personal to her, there was importance attached to it being an award winning show) and I think that did rather open up the subject of awards

I had no idea that the Grammy's had a spoken/narration category; nor when the qualifying dates for consideration for each years awards are. When are the nominations expected for the next awards? (Depending on dates, he could be nominated this year and if that does happen, I expect it will be very much talked about)

Angrycat2768 · 11/01/2024 08:37

Surely if people are still talking about it a year later, it's a success! People who don't like Harry seem to be the ones determined to keep him in the news and to constantly talk about him! I had no idea Spare had been out a year. I didn't read it. It didn't occur to me to look up the Grammy nominations. This is why they are in the press. Because people are so obsessed with slagging them off that the media knows that one tiny mention will get all the ' haterz' poring over every single thing. Looking up award nominations so they can be outraged, looking up Instagram posts that they put out in their own Instagram so they can he outraged, and bringing up anniversaries of books so they can be outraged! Just leave them alone and they will go away through lack of interest. The huge media interest in them is 90% people who say they hate them and want them to go away. They disappear and its all ' Where is Meghan? ' It's like a national sport.

Ridemeginger · 11/01/2024 08:39

Actually, @EdithWeston having done further digging, the nominations for 2024 were already made and he's not on the list. I actually do find that a bit off. Whether the book was liked or not, plenty of people bought it for it to warrant a nomination. And I am guessing his narration has been sampled more than any of the other nominees.

I haven't read the book but the extracts which were printed last year kept me laughing through January so yes it was a success but maybe not in the way Harry intended it to be.

People are still talking about Hitler. It's hardly a ringing endorsement.

Your post is spot on @Angrycat2768

The latest Daily Mail Headline:

Outrage as Prince Harry is to be named a 'Legend of Aviation'

And British Professor of History, David Olusoga calls the outrage an industry, and has coined the phrase ‘ The Outrage Industrial Complex’

Yes I'm sure rhe holocaust survivors will appreciate it.

ArcaneWireless · 11/01/2024 13:33

I’m not sure it is outrage as much as incredulity. 🌱

LittleTeawithmilk · 11/01/2024 13:55

The Daily Mirror says ‘outrage’ - and they do want people to be outraged. And will write whatever they can to encourage outrage. Outrage is now monetised. Outrage means clicks therefore money.

Yes because talking about your own experience of your own family is comparable to Hitler's history making horrors. Lucky using prostitutes who may or may not have been under age is barely a crime isn't it?

Who would even know about this award if Mumsnet posters and the Daily Mail ( probably trawling this site woukd know or care about this award? Who is ' outraged'about someone being given an obscure award? Who cares what some awards committee do? It's not the Oscars. If it discredits the award, so what? They decided to give the award.

Sad sacks who are permanently outraged

If you want to blame someone for the aviation award being in the news, blame Omid Scobie. He's the one who appears to have first tweeted about it, the papers are just picking up the story from him.

Haven't RTFT but yes, I read it having waited while the immense library reservation list cleared (wasn't prepared to put a red cent into Harold's pocket)

TBH I think I might as well have stuck to the tabloid highlights for all the insight offered.

I'm due to pick up my 'Endgame' reservation from said libe tomorrow.

No wait there 😁
