Happy Birthday, Spare!

It’s the one year anniversary of the release of Spare, how are you all celebrating?!

In all seriousness, a year on what impact do you think the book has had on the Royal Family and the Sussexes?

In my opinion it clearly did very well commercially but in popular culture it became a bit of a joke. In terms of the RF I’m not sure it made much difference - to people who already didn’t like them it confirmed what they already believed, to people who did like them it was more evidence that Harry was no loss. I also think even a year later it has made reconciliation between William and Harry impossible.

Can't be worse than the world knowing your.dad wishes he was a tampon!

How many times will this untruth be repeated? Don't complain about lies and then expect to be taken seriously when you post them yourself.

He said it would have been "just his luck" if he came back as a tampon (ie the opposite of wanting to be one). And that conversation was made public thanks to phone hacking - he didn't put it out there into the public - just like Harry was hacked and had his private life violated.

The frostbite Harry suffered was not egregious in itself. It was the fact that he wrote about rubbing Elizabeth Arden cream on his penis whilst thinking about his mother (the smell of the cream reminded him of her). That sort of passage brought ridicule to his door. His publishers and editors let him down putting that sort of thing into print.

Where have I complained about lying? He wasn't hacked some radio geek accidentally and yes he said he wanted to live in Camilla' s knickers and he didn't want.to be a tampon as he'd get flushed down the toilet.

How would I know

😂Well sad sack that I am I looked up NHS guidelines and cream was never mentioned.

thefallen · 10/01/2024 20:14

'Can't be worse than the world knowing your.dad wishes he was a tampon!'

That is a misquote from a private conversation which was illegally recorded. It isn't the gotcha you think it is. It wasn't something Charles chose to announce to the world.

The point was that it would be embarrassing for the kids having that information out in the public.

wildernesssw · 10/01/2024 20:19

It wasn't Charles' decision to put that conversation in public.

It was Harry's decision to put the cream/frostbitten todger in public

It doesn't matter how the information came out. The previous conversation was about embarrassment for the.kids not how the conversation came about.

Of course it is relevant, it comes down to the parent(s) concern about their impact on their child(ren).

In one case they didn't have a choice, in the other they did.

And one was about cheating on their mum and the other was having frostbite so that probably makes a difference as well.

wildernesssw · 10/01/2024 20:36

It's the difference between a photo you choose to put out in public, and a 'papped' shot taken with a telephoto lens without your knowledge or permission

Well yes Charles had several deliberate photos with Jimmy Savile taken in his time. That really is cringe.

DillDanding · 10/01/2024 20:44

I listened to the Audiobook. Really enjoyed it. Then my book club chose it and everyone enjoyed it too. Thought the military stuff was particularly interesting.

Not a fan of any of the royals, pretty indifferent, but it did make me think William and Kate are up their own arses.

So you've said he wished to be a tampon and that he didn't want to be a tampon. Which is it? Because your initial assertion is a lie.

Being "accidentally" recorded and then having the conversation sold to a tabloid lies where on your moral compass compared to phone hacking?

MrsLeonFarrell · 10/01/2024 21:16

I haven't read it, the only person I know who has read it said they felt like they were reading someone's private diary and it felt a bit uncomfortable, not good or bad just personal.

In the last few years I think the only royal who went public in a way that really changed things, permanently, was Andrew. Despite what he clearly thinks and what his supporters try to leak to the press I don't think he will ever have an official royal role again.

One was about rubbing cream into your penis and thinking about your dead mother. Compared to some cheesy sexy talk between their grandparents they don't know, I'm guessing the children of Harry and Meghan will be more mortified by their father's words.

WinnieTheW0rm · 10/01/2024 21:35

It's the references to his mother - who used it on her lips - that make the frozen willy passage so ..... what's the right word here, unusual? weird? creepy?

Ridemeginger · 10/01/2024 21:41

Oedipal.

I think from what I gather is that he would have been a tampon of he.could have.stayed in there because that is where he wanted to be but knowing he would be flushed down the toilet. I think he was saying permanently inside his lover not that he wanted to be be a piece of absorbent cotton with a piece of string.on it.

I don't agree with either.

But one proposed remedy seems to have been lost in the tsunami
Harry writes: “My penis was oscillating between extremely sensitive and borderline traumatised. The last place I wanted to be was Frostnipistan.”
Harry added a friend recommended a remedy: “She’d urged me to apply Elizabeth Arden cream.
My mum used to use that on her lips. You want me to put that on my todger.
It works, Harry. Trust me.
“I found a tube, and the minute I opened it the smell transported me through time.
“I felt as if my mother was right there in the room. Then I took a smidge and applied it … down there. ‘Weird’ doesn’t really do the feeling justice.”

That is when a normal person puts the cap back on, washes their hands and pretends it never happened.

I have to confess I also thought the thread title was a meanie swipe at PHs actual birthday too. Well played OP 😂

One thing that stands out is the lack of a Grammy nomination for the audiobook. Considering how record breaking the sales were, you would have expected him to be nominated.

Why do you care. You don't like him.

I care about the process. I don’t care for your petulant posts.
