@Gardeningtime Travolta is a Scientologist too, so will probably take a pretty dim view of Harry's drug use and therapy, which they are very against. To be honest, if it was my organisation, I wouldn't touch JT with a bargepole either.

The thing that stands out for me is that Harry probably would not be able to get aviation licence now because of all his (declared by himself) drug use. Again, for a charity seeking to encourage kids into aviation, I am struggling to understand why he is viewed as a good role model for them in the aviation field, when he has no distinguished accomplishments as a pilot or innovator in the industry.

George V was notoriously dim witted. That’s why they sent him to the horse races so often, to keep him out of trouble.

George V was a 2nd son, not expected to inherit and was given no proper education either - instead he was sent to join the Navy at the age of 12.

He has Prince in front of his first name and is a member of the most well known Royal Family on the planet. His father is King and his brother will be too.

That's why.

@Mymilkshakebringsallthepapstomycar No I haven’t had a chance to listen to the latest one yet. Thanks for the Scandal mongers one too - Downloaded ✅🙌🏻 🎧
it’s another one right up my street. I’ve never heard of Andrew Lownie before but he’s very easy to listen.

The posts on this threat are depressing, why can't people let others be?!

An American organization wants to give Harry an award, let them!

I think you’ve misunderstood the point of a discussion forum? People are discussing it, harry and Megan put themselves out there. Trying to silence people is never something that works. But you don’t need to read it.

And that’s the whole point of the discussion, no one is sure they want to, more he paid for it.

Because the second son of the King and his American wife are a grave threat to one of the oldest, richest and most powerful families in the world. They are so defenceless that they need to be defended at all costs. By people they don't know or care about.

Apparently they can't answer back either.

Why would they give Harry an award if they do not want to?

And where did you read or hear that people pay for awards? If that was the case, Harry may as well have paid to receive an award from an organization that everyone has heard of? But that is not the case here.

Why is it difficult for people to accept that there are probably a lot of people, organizations, institutions etc. that appreciate Harry?

No one is saying people should be silent.

It is the virulence of it all that is so off-putting and unpleasant.

It is possible to have an candid conversation about something without the unpleasantness seen on this thread....and definitely with fewer memes.

Um they’d give him one for paying for it, a huge donation, cmon now, no one is that naive, pay to play is a thing,

Then hide the thread if you find it distressing. I don’t read it like you do . Although I agree on the memes..

They could say 'No thanks, we'd like to preserve the integrity of this obscure award that no one had heard of until we gave it to Prince Harry' But they didn't. They either took the money or they gave him an award for publicity ( which they got, in spades, mostly from people outraged that an organisation they had never heard of they dared give Harry an award)
Haven't we learnt from the Weinstein scandal that even the Oscars are mostly given on the basis of how many gifts are given to the awards committee?

True, I think to be honest the controversy has damaged the integrity of the award. And will cause issues in future years. Now everyone thinks it’s a gimmick you pay for. When actually it was a real thing.

no one seriously thinks Harry should be inducted as a living legend due to his extraordinary contribution to aviation.

yes he qualified as a helicopter pilot. But that’s it. And you don’t get recognised as having an “extraordinary contribution to aviation” as you did ten years in the army, or were on the board of travelyst, as the company is now trying to say is the reason he’s got it.

it denigrates anyone who received it before him, or would do after, as it makes it meaningless.

MaturingCheeseball · 14/01/2024 09:40

One thing M&H have achieved is lifting the lid on all these awards. It’s a merry-go-round of backslapping and mutual backscratching and, worse, hoovering up charitable donations with extravagant dos that are “expenses” before profits.

Obviously this has gone on for aeons - and I’m sure some charities raise masses from events (dh was invited to a boxing dinner and he said people were putting in thousands ) but sadly there is a whole raft of dinners etc where it’s just an excuse to schmooze and net profit equals 30p (or cents in US).

It would be interesting to know if Harry approached them or they approached him. Whatever, it doesn't reflect well on him at all. If he thinks he deserves this award, what does that say about him?

That's their decision though. Does anyone know who else has received this award? Its hardly going to have been a surprise to them that it was going to be a controversial decision but they gave it anyway.

Frankly its far more important that the Knighthoods, CBE's, OBE's (Order of the British Empire, still, 70 years after the end of Empire) etc that are given out to various cronies, tax dodgers and people who should be in prison discredit the deserving awards given out to people who do genuine good to the community. When it has become more honourable to turn down an award than it is to receive one.

The outrage about our National awards, given out by The Crown on the order of His Majesty's Government to fuckwits who can then sit in the House of Lords and make decisions on our laws is nonexistent compared to the outrage that some small American aviation charity that has nothing to do with us has decided of their own volition to give out an award to Prince Harry.

Too right.

Out honours system is a joke. Charlotte Owens, Baroness Mone. These people actually have influence over our laws. Harry's dad has been involved in cash for honours scanda.

How many people had even heard of 'Living Legend of Aviation' before this week?

Mymilkshakebringsallthepapstomycar · 14/01/2024 10:50

So if Harry gets the award for co-piloting/being a gunner, what does the actual pilot of his plane get? Shouldn't he be inducted into this hall of fame too, at the same time?
