Extensive Phone Hacking by MGN

So... Harry has won his case.

As lawyers are saying now... this is massive. 15 out of 33 accusations of hacking by Harry were upheld as a result of phone hacking and other illegal practices.
Hacking and blagging were even taking place during the Leveson enquiry.

He has won damages of £140,000 plus. And before this thread descends into Harry hate, please think of all the other claimants who have also had their claims upheld and damages awarded to them. They went through hell, medical records hacked and reported on, trackers on cars, phones hacked...

It's not about the money, it's about 'accountability of power'.

I thought this thread would be on fire but it isn't.

I wonder why (not)

mamma65432 · 15/12/2023 11:10

Was this when Piers was in charge?

Cakester · 15/12/2023 11:10

Thanks for starting, listening now...

*When handing down his ruling, Mr Justice Fancourt said there were only two directors who knew of phone hacking incidents before 2011.
He named them as Paul Vickers and Sly Bailey.
They did not inform the MGN board as a whole, he said.
"It was concealed from the board, Parliament, the public, the Leveson inquiry," he said. *

Some of the hacking they've established was happening during Leveson how disgusting... brazen! The lawyer at The Mirror also deemed to have known it was happening...

Congratulations Harry!

Michael Le Vell also won on 4 claims.

This makes me sad though: Mr Justice Fancourt says the claims of soap actress Nikki Sanderson and the ex-wife of comedian Paul Whitehouse, Fiona Wightman, are barred because times for their claims have expired.

Cakester · 15/12/2023 11:11

the judgement was known to the parties earlier in the week... kind of explains the media onslaught on him lately, played out also on social media.....

newnamethanks · 15/12/2023 11:11

Excellent result. Good for him. Wonder if Piers Morgan will be a little quieter now? He moves from utter nastiness to obsequious smarming so rapidly that I might look out for that. Is it possible that criminal charges could follow this verdict?

Roussette · 15/12/2023 11:11

mamma65432 · 15/12/2023 11:10

Was this when Piers was in charge?

I believe so. He was mentioned twice by a lawyer as the result came in.

I agree this is quiet on here, we know why.

more

There was "extensive" phone hacking by Mirror Group Newspapers from 2006 to 2011, "even to some extent" during the Leveson Inquiry into media standards, Mr Justice Fancourt says.
Discussing the periods of unlawful activity, he says there was "some unlawful activity" in 1995 and then unlawful information gathering was "widespread" in all three newspapers from 1996.
He says phone hacking and other unlawful information gathering became "widespread and habitual" from 1998 onwards.

Really pleased to see this result coming through.

Just took a peek at the DM front page and didn't see it mentioned. Funny that, usually Harry can't fart without it appearing.

Reugny · 15/12/2023 11:13

The Mirror Group have put out an apology statement somewhere.

Some of it is here

I've gotta ask @Cakester ... was that Director's first name really 'Sly' or was it your mobile doing auto correct?! If so, spot on!

HackedOff are saying it is 'an extraordinary judgement with a Board level cover up of criminal activity when a major public enquiry Leveson was taking place'

Her real first bame is sylvia.

Reugny · 15/12/2023 11:16

Telegraph have it on their online front page. They were laying into them the other day.

Roussette · 15/12/2023 11:17

Oh my, this guy talking is so right. It was absolutely disgusting that Leveson 2 was cancelled and the Government should be hold to account for that decision.

Apparently the Judge said he found it extraordinary that Piers Morgan was not required to give evidence.

Harry's Legal Representative talking now.

She is commonly known as Sly. She doesn't find it offensive. Just as well really.

Cakester · 15/12/2023 11:18

I copied and pasted that from sky news!

Roussette · 15/12/2023 11:18

Mirror Group's legal department, their Directors, Piers Morgan, Editors knew all about these illegal practices whilst the Leveson enquiry was taking place

The KC is even talking about attacks on his family and 'vendetta journalism'

OP posts:
rosyglowcondition · 15/12/2023 11:18

It's well known Harry and many others were hacked in that period. William and Catherine too, and Charles. They all won their cases. No one is going to 'hate' on Harry for genuinely being a victim of phone hacking and it's ridiculous to say that. The MGN have been held to account and that is the right decision.

Roussette · 15/12/2023 11:21

It has just been proven, yes.

He may now be considering the other 114 articles

Cakester · 15/12/2023 11:23

The Chief executive knew there was criminal activity going on, during Leveson! There needs to be a Leveson 2.

Bookworm1111 · 15/12/2023 11:23

He deserved to win, hacking is a disgusting practice, but what a pious statement his KC has just delivered on his behalf.

Rockybooboo · 15/12/2023 11:23

This is such good news.

whattheactualfrog · 15/12/2023 11:24

The judge said MGN phone hacking was “extensive” but that Harry himself was hacked “modestly”. I’m glad the judge also noted a lot of coverage of Harry that he doesn’t like is completely lawful. Extract from summary (I couldn’t find mention of legal fees if anyone else knows who pays?):

Extensive Phone Hacking by MGN
Extensive Phone Hacking by MGN
Roussette · 15/12/2023 11:24

This is a landmark day. Apparently.

Apparently MGN had an army of lawyers, far more than the claimants. But they have won.
