Extensive Phone Hacking by MGN

So... Harry has won his case.

As lawyers are saying now... this is massive. 15 out of 33 accusations of hacking by Harry were upheld as a result of phone hacking and other illegal practices.
Hacking and blagging were even taking place during the Leveson enquiry.

He has won damages of £140,000 plus. And before this thread descends into Harry hate, please think of all the other claimants who have also had their claims upheld and damages awarded to them. They went through hell, medical records hacked and reported on, trackers on cars, phones hacked...

It's not about the money, it's about 'accountability of power'.

Our government decided to to proceed with the second part of Leveson... think about that. There are 80 possible claimants against MGN alone, all having to fund this privately. Its not right. The second part of the enquiry should never have been cancelled.

I haven’t read the judgement and will do when I’ve put my solicitor’s head on (chest infection) but I’m so glad Harry has won. Even though I’m not a fan of his.

Phone hacking is vile. Personally I’d like to see the hackers dragged through the criminal courts.

Roussette · 15/12/2023 11:28

The fact hacking and blagging was actually going on during Leveson 1 is completely despicable.

Michaell Le Vell awarded £32K

I am just so sorry Nikki Sanderson and Ms Wightman (Paul Whitehouse's exwife) were just out of time. Nikki was so young and her testimony whilst it was going on was so powerful. Ditto Ms Wightman

It's well known Harry and many others were hacked in that period. William and Catherine too, and Charles. They all won their cases. No one is going to 'hate' on Harry for genuinely being a victim of phone hacking and it's ridiculous to say that. The MGN have been held to account and that is the right decision.

I'm not a fan of H&M at all, but this is the right result for him and the many others affected by the unlawful and despicable behaviour of the press. However, the judge did comment that Harry had a tendency to think all stories must be the result of hacking, which they were not. The phone hacking scandal is now a long time ago. I would hope Harry could take the win and move on, but sadly he won't and so long as that is the case he will continue to seeth and be full of bitterness which is not healthy.

Cakester · 15/12/2023 11:28

This trial only looked at a quarter of Harrys claim.... MGN said his claims were fantastical. Ha. Not only not true, but the top digs knew and continued during Leveson.

Sherborne is speaking now... so good

So sorry to hear about your chest infection. There's quite a few posters who have got the same sort of thing at the moment. Fingers x'd for you it clears up nicely for Christmas.

Thank you Roussette. I seem to getting them all the time now almost monthly- been diagnosed with chronic bronchitis so that doesn’t help!!

Cakester · 15/12/2023 11:31

Wouldn't you? Half the claims seen, and there is 114 more, were the result of hacking. So the only other reason for details of private phonecalls to be revealed to anyone, is the person at the other end.... I guess he naively thought there were people in his life, like family and friends, staff, he could trust and assumed that all of it was hacking. If thats the biggest criticism against him over this... seems like people are desperate to overlook the serious crimes that happened.

Absolutely. I think it was Nikki Sanderson who said she felt she couldn't trust her friends or even some of her family.
I'd be totally paranoid if it were me

From the full judgement it says the judge thinks they had one person at each newspaper that was authorised to do it. Couldn’t find anything on legal fees though.

Cakester · 15/12/2023 11:34

For me, this is important, its not just about Harry so:

just as importantly is the fact that his team have landed a judgment that says hacking was widespread - and known about by two key executives

I think people forget who was involved in the earlier hacking cases... and crucially who denied it.

I thought this thread would be on fire but it isn't.

I wonder why (not)

Oh we know why it's not

PartyFearsTwo · 15/12/2023 11:37

That’s a great result. Headline news on the bbc just now.

Cakester · 15/12/2023 11:38

Yes @Roussette and Sienna Miller said the same. You become paranoid, and then thats another thing the tabloids can call you. Its horrible.

ILikeDinosaurs · 15/12/2023 11:39

Good on ya, Harry! I'm very glad.

Cakester · 15/12/2023 11:39

How did I miss this:

Piers Morgan knew about phone hacking - and was involved - when he was editor of the Daily Mirror, the High Court has ruled.
In a highly significant part of the judgment, Mr Justice Fancourt lists times when Morgan was said to have been aware of phone hacking - and the evidence had not been contested. He also said that he found evidence about Morgan’s involvement to be credible and it had not been countered by the Mirror Group.

Didn't he tell Leveson he knew nothing about it?

Mumsnut · 15/12/2023 11:41

This is a good result

and they gaslight you.

Tell you are an attention seeker.

You don't need additional security.

I am not a fan of the monarchy nor do I think H&M are without fault, but the way these two have been abused- and quite frankly continue to be by the Press is inhumane

Cakester · 15/12/2023 11:42

Ha, this will annoy some people!

During a key part of the case, the now royal author Omid Scobie recalled an incident he had witnessed when he was a student intern at the newspaper group, working on its “3am Girls” entertainment desk.
He told the court that in 2002 he had witnessed Morgan discuss an article about Kylie Minogue and Morgan, the then editor, had asked the journalist how confident they were about the story. Morgan was told, Scobie recalled, that the source had been a voicemail.
Mr Justice Fancourt said that recollection was supported by evidence of an invoice from a private investigator related to obtaining Minogue’s mobile phone number and that of her then partner, James Gooding.
Scobie said that the incident had stuck in his mind because it had influenced the decisions he made about what kind of journalist he wanted to be.
Today, the judge said:
Quote Message: I found Mr Scobie to be a straight-forward and reliable witness and I accept what he said about Mr Morgan’s involvement in the Minogue/Gooding story.

Tippexy · 15/12/2023 11:42

Oh it’s just a partial victory though, which bit was unsuccessful?

Roussette · 15/12/2023 11:42

I am hoping the backlash for Piers Morgan will be enormous.
