Extensive Phone Hacking by MGN

So... Harry has won his case.

As lawyers are saying now... this is massive. 15 out of 33 accusations of hacking by Harry were upheld as a result of phone hacking and other illegal practices.
Hacking and blagging were even taking place during the Leveson enquiry.

He has won damages of £140,000 plus. And before this thread descends into Harry hate, please think of all the other claimants who have also had their claims upheld and damages awarded to them. They went through hell, medical records hacked and reported on, trackers on cars, phones hacked...

It's not about the money, it's about 'accountability of power'.

I can’t decide where I think Piers Morgan was going with his attacks on H&M.

Did he think he would never be named in a judgment or did he know he would and wanted to get blows in first?

Doesn’t matter either way, the man is an arse.

*The lawyers for Prince Harry begin by saying he is unable to be present today due to short notice.
But they say he has prepared a statement on this "momentous win".
Reading the statement, the lawyer says: "Today is a great day for truth as well as accountability".
He adds unlawful information gathering, the ruling found, was "carried out at all three titles on a habitual and widespread basis for over more than a decade".
Sherbourne says the case is not just about hacking adding it is about "systemic and appalling behaviour followed by cover ups".
He says the shocking scale have only been revealed through these court proceedings.
Sherbourne adds that Mirror Group board directors, legal team and editors such as Piers Morgan "clearly knew about" phone hacking.
Sherbourne continues, saying the ruling makes clear "principal board directors, the legal department senior executives and editors, such as Piers Morgan, clearly knew about or were involved in" unlawful information gathering.
He adds that "between them, they even went as far as to lie under oath at the Leveson Inquiry" into phone hacking.
"The journey to justice can be a slow and painful one," he adds, saying that defamatory stories and intimidating tactics have been "deployed against me".He adds, on behalf of Prince Harry, that the Duke of Sussex "respectfully calls on authorities, the financial regulator, stock markets… and the Metropolitan Police and prosecuting authorities to do their duty for the British public and investigate bringing charges against the company and those who broke the law".
"Today's ruling is vindicating and affirming," Sherborne adds saying it has been a "worthwhile price to pay".

Oh it’s just a partial victory though, which bit was unsuccessful?

google is a great resource..

Reugny · 15/12/2023 11:48

Sounds like News Group (Murdoch owned)will settle thanks to today's ruling.

Mirror Group couldn't as they are a PLC - Reach PLC.

ThisisgroundcontroltoMajorTom · 15/12/2023 11:48

Whoo hoo! So delighted for Harry! Against all the odds!

As one of the few people who has deep enough pockets to bring a case like this, he was really brave to stand up for what he believed in and took a heck of a lot of unjustified flack for it! Delighted for Doreen Laurence too!

Thank you for this thread Roussette it’s early days but it’s it interesting how the usual posters aren’t appearing on here ´ - I wonder if they will turn up - just shows that even a High Court judge can’t change their bias against H & M!

The ruling also demonstrates that a lot of the information out there about him and Meghan was obtained by illegal mean and as such should be ignored!

I think it also goes some way to explain why there has been such vitriol in the press against him since he brought the case. And explains Piers Morgan’s vitriol.

Camilla needs to be careful who she shares her lunch table with!

Cakester · 15/12/2023 11:48

So Piers Morgan lying under oath... how serious is this?

Reugny · 15/12/2023 11:49

It's up to the authorities e.g. police, CPS to do their jobs.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 15/12/2023 11:49

Really glad to hear this, though I thought the next bit of the case was being heard in January (probably getting mixed up with the ANL thing)

Whether it's Harry or not they deserve to get their arses handed to them, and I wonder if there's any chance of Leveson 2 now - even if the media claim this is "historic" in an effort to close it down

Cakester · 15/12/2023 11:50

Just FYI, this isn't that case with Baroness Lawrence, thats ANL. Yet to go to trial.
Also please note, he was awarded damages, but they had made a higher offer to him 3 months ago and he declined, likely because the moneys not what matters, he wanted a judge to rule on this.

Just remember MGN called his claims fantastical... untrue etc that made headlines everywhere.

ThisisgroundcontroltoMajorTom · 15/12/2023 11:50

Why are the damages so paltry?

Yes, thats the other 114 articles and if they'll now proceed with them, they tested just a few of what he brought to see of there was merit to it.... so we shall see what MGN do now.

Thatfeatherthere · 15/12/2023 11:51

Really pleased he won. Anyone who belittles the effect phone hacking can have on someone's life should research the Milly Dowler case. And then watch the Paul Gascoigne documentary where he explained how hacking had a dramatic effect on his mental health as he no longer felt able to trust anyone.

ThisisgroundcontroltoMajorTom · 15/12/2023 11:52

Crossed posts Cakester about the damages and noted about Doreen Laurence trial! I stand corrected!

Cakester · 15/12/2023 11:52

ThisisgroundcontroltoMajorTom · 15/12/2023 11:50

Why are the damages so paltry?

Roughly half of what he was seeking, as just under half were found to be true. He was offered more just a few months ago, he declined as he wanted this judgement. It wasn't about damages.

There are 80 other claimants waiting to see what would happen here. MGN are in trouble now!

Honestly I think this landed were I thought it would.

Some hacking of Harry and others occurred which personally must be devastating - mirror had serious form for doing so and really needs to be held to account for this.

Piers Morgan behavior awful - always though this - no idea how rebuilt is reputation in recent years or why he gets so much air time.

Harry assuming it's all hacking rather than other legal journalist means - I think paranoia is understandable but for previous coverage of court proceeding suggested this.

The Duke of Sussex called on the Metropolitan Police and prosecuting authorities to "investigate bringing charges against the company and those who broke the law"

I'd hope that will happen because I think it really does need it but honesty wouldn't hold my breath about end up with actual prosecutions

Hacking trial: Prince Harry was victim of phone hacking by Mirror Group papers, judge rules - BBC News

The High Court says Harry's phone was targeted between 2003 and 2009, awarding him £140,600 in damages.

This.

People are so consumed with hatred of H.

Piers hacked into Milly dowlers phone. Utterly despicable odious man.

How he is still allowed to have a platform is beyond me!

Cakester · 15/12/2023 11:54

I feel for all the ordinary people they did this too, people who were victims of crimes or caught up in news stories.... who never had the money or opportunity to do anything about it.

Yes! It has to happen now, surely...

Cakester · 15/12/2023 11:57

I had wondered why there was ramped up hatred in the media and on SM about them in the last week or so, definitely increased, desperate twisting of things to be negative .. all makes sense now. For MGN to make an offer recently, they must of known they would lose a lot of this.

LadyKenya · 15/12/2023 11:58

Very good news. And the statement read out on behalf of PH was excellent.
