Extensive Phone Hacking by MGN

So... Harry has won his case.

As lawyers are saying now... this is massive. 15 out of 33 accusations of hacking by Harry were upheld as a result of phone hacking and other illegal practices.
Hacking and blagging were even taking place during the Leveson enquiry.

He has won damages of £140,000 plus. And before this thread descends into Harry hate, please think of all the other claimants who have also had their claims upheld and damages awarded to them. They went through hell, medical records hacked and reported on, trackers on cars, phones hacked...

It's not about the money, it's about 'accountability of power'.

The judge said MGN phone hacking was “extensive” but that Harry himself was hacked “modestly”. I’m glad the judge also noted a lot of coverage of Harry that he doesn’t like is completely lawful. Extract from summary (I couldn’t find mention of legal fees if anyone else knows who pays?):

Are we really going to start analyzing if was a lot or a little?

Fact is he was hacked, as he claimed.

Fact is he is harrassed non stop by a vindictive media.

Fact is that same media drive (mis)information campaigns.

Fact is we should really look at them and not at the carrot (PH) being dangled.

Think of the daily interference with every part of our lives - from huge important decision like elections, Brexit etc to the most banal.

I feel for all the ordinary people they did this too, people who were victims of crimes or caught up in news stories.... who never had the money or opportunity to do anything about it.

Yes yes yes to this.

I think of the husband of the poor woman who went missing, won't name her as I don't want to feed it, but he was put through hell by the media. Not hacking I know, but I think there was blagging involved.

I'm quaking in my boots. Thank you for telling me.

I'm only going by press reports of the judgement but it seems a sensible, measured decision by the Judge. I remember when watching some of the evidence being reported and I thought at first Harry wasn't providing much evidence and wouldn't win but there were quite detailed conversations here about the balance of proof needed in this sort of case which I found helpful and which changed my mind.

I don't understand why some of the cases were judged out of time when Harry's examples come from 2003 - 2009. Can anyone explain that? It seems awful for those who couldn't produce evidence and get closure.

I hope that getting this judgement will help Harry, I would hate living a life in the public arena. I'm not sure his calls for investigations and consequences by the police, the stock market etc are going to bear much fruit though.

rosyglowcondition · 15/12/2023 12:02

I'll repeat. No one supports phone hacking and every decent person think the newspapers need to be held to account. I've never seen anyone, supporter or otherwise, applaud the phone hacking scandal. This affects so many people and horrifies all right minded people.

Roussette · 15/12/2023 12:04

There's no need to repeat that. We all abhor phone hacking, blagging, and all illegal practices
Quite obviously

@MrsLeonFarrell I believe it comes down to when they knew or should reasonably have known. Michael Le Vell won on 4 claims.

ScremeEggs · 15/12/2023 12:04

So pleased at the result.
How come it's only ever Prince Harry's name mentioned though? I suppose he's the easiest "target" to discredit it all
I mean, there's others as well, not just him out for justice - Michael le Vell as mentioned upthread, and Stephen Lawrence's mum to name just two.
As for editors not knowing what was going on - I call utter bullshit. There's no way they won't have had an idea of what was going on.

Cakester · 15/12/2023 12:05

@ScremeEggs Baroness Lawrence is involved in a different case, thats ANL, or Daily Mail, Mail on Sunday- who Camilla's son works for.

ScremeEggs · 15/12/2023 12:06

ColleenDonaghy · 15/12/2023 11:13

Really pleased to see this result coming through.

Just took a peek at the DM front page and didn't see it mentioned. Funny that, usually Harry can't fart without it appearing.

Really? Very convenient then if they decide to ignore a big news story about him this time!

I am rewatching some of Piers Morgan's Leveson testimony... doesn't quite appear so arrogant and confident as he does on the telly... let's see what comes of him lying here

Piers Morgan speaks at Leveson inquiry into media ethics

I'm not a fan of H&M at all, but this is the right result for him and the many others affected by the unlawful and despicable behaviour of the press. However, the judge did comment that Harry had a tendency to think all stories must be the result of hacking, which they were not. The phone hacking scandal is now a long time ago. I would hope Harry could take the win and move on, but sadly he won't and so long as that is the case he will continue to seeth and be full of bitterness which is not healthy.

It seems to me that he is proved right more than he is proved wrong.

The papers have been full of nasty stories about him and his wife for the past few weeks. Wall to wall - all about what a shit he is.

More than likely they knew this result and so set the stage before the public knew.

Does that not give you pause?

We are witnessing a sustained campaign of hate and bullying of a private citizen on a national scale.

There is huge potiential for catastrophe here. Huge.

His father is an utter disgrace.

So Piers Morgan lying under oath... how serious is this?

It makes me laugh that people say 'Oh Meghan dropped Piers Morgan as soon as she met Harry- she must have been using him' when its just as likely she met Harry, said she knew Piers Morgan, he told her to stay away as he was involved in hacking his phone and was a general snake, and she then dropped him!

That’s decent of you to say so RosyGlow

There were so many threads with various posters on them calling Harry deluded and entitled for bringing the case in the first place.

I think this ruling shows that Harry did have a case for getting a bit more support from the Palace than he did.

nah, she probably just saw through him

Been on many first dates where I'm smiled, remained engaging and as I drive home I think never again!!!!!!!!

What she heard after probably sealed the deal.

Cakester · 15/12/2023 12:10

May this year, this is what Piers said:

He added: “There’s no evidence I knew anything about any of it. I never told anybody to hack a phone. And [none]... of the hundreds and hundreds – thousands, possibly – of journalists who worked with me on the Daily Mirror have ever even been arrested in connection with phone hacking.
“So there are lots of civil things going on, but the bar for that is a lot lower than it is for any criminal action. I’ve not been involved in any of these settlements at all. Nobody has even asked me for my opinion, which I think says it all.”
