A continuing civilised and enjoyable discussion of all things relating to Endgame. Please keep posts on topic - I do not want to have to invoke Ross Gellar again!

Oh, and for every foie gras story, I am sure there’s one about how your ethical oat lattes use supplies from oppressive Chinese states. If Kate or anyone who eats the stuff is a vocal and hypocritical campaigner for the rights of geese, and uses that as a USP to make a profit for their business or cause, then let it be exposed. And so it should be with anyone else who says one thing and does something else. Sauce for the goose.

However, unflattering truth and lies are not the same thing, and so far, Bowers has been able to show his research stands up when his subjects have sued him.

I’ll have to rely on someone who’s actually read Bowers book - I’d like to know if Bowers did indeed write that Serena Williams was not a friend of Meghan Markle, as has been reported.

Serena Williams has said they’ve been friends for a long time. Before Meghan became royal. And was first on Meghan’s podcast.

ALittleTeawithmilk · 23/12/2023 09:14

‘It’s Meghan I’m after’ - when the truth slips out. Unbiased? Does not sound it.

If anyone wants to get a last minute Christmas bargain Amazon have reduced Endgame by 68% - yours for £6.99!

Mymilkshakebringsallthepapstomycar · 23/12/2023 10:45

@ALittleTeawithmilk just for you I have looked at all the passages that the index says mentions Serena Williams. Nowhere does Bower claim they were not friends. One of his sources, Serena’s ex of 2 years, claims he never heard Serena mention M. Then there is the Vanity Fair journalist who researched and wrote the “Wild About Harry” piece who was told by Serena that they were not friends, but acquaintances:

She gave him an enigmatic quote: “You’ve got to be who you are, Meghan. You can’t hide”

Bower relays (but does not give his opinion on) this in a chapter about that interview, what preceded the article and what happens afterwards. Every other mention of Serena by Bower is either innocuous (eg M going to watch her at Wimbledon) or indicates a friendship (and he includes a reference to her appearing on the podcast).

Thanks for clarifying.

Does she eat foie gras?

Maireas · 23/12/2023 10:59

@Theunamedcat - according to a waiter selling his story to the Daily Mail. He seemed to have memorised their orders and even quoted prices. Camilla had something less controversial. Maybe prawn cocktail, who knows.
It's funny how selective people are about stories from the Daily Mail. Sometimes totally bollox, sometimes the Biblical Truth. Depending who the target is.

Maireas · 23/12/2023 11:00

Oh, and ps - the story is dated 2011.

I have read the book, and can confirm this.

At no point does Bower deny that Meghan is friends with Serena.

I got the impression it was a new friendship and not particularly close (at that point), but that was it.

At points Bower is complimentary of Meghan - he credits her work ethic very highly. If anything she just comes across as a typical American actress - not A list and working hard to get there.

Cosywintertime · 23/12/2023 11:28

To be fair to Megan I also think she’s grafted. She did a lot of shit jobs before suits, and nothing of note. She them got suits, a hugely lucky break and it got syndicated. However it is the only thing she’s done of note, she wasn’t remotely even semi successful before it. And when she married Harry, very few people would have known her real name, just her character.

that’s why I don’t get the daft leak they put out about her being popular in Hollywood, having so many offers her agency has never seen anything like it. Megan has very little back catalogue. Her Hollywood experience is limited to hot girl on a plane, and a voice over she did for Disney after they left. Anyone wanting Megan will do it only as they’ve a dead donkey on their hands and think she will bring publicity to it. Which is never going to be the holly wood she’s looking for.

Given Tom Bower used the Daily Mail for his well researched and well sourced book on Meghan wonder which category he belongs to? 😉

Along with all the anonymous sources why wouldn't he be believable? Add in a sprinkle of hate and there is a sure fire winner to satisfy the appetites of the misogynists, racists, and all in between. Well done Tom 👏 Genuinely feel for those who bought the book expecting an honest and transparent read.

CallmeSand · 23/12/2023 12:15

@Maireas you are right about Meghan and her numerous things that she has done - from calligrapher ( she did Robin Thicke's wedding invites) to Suits. She is one of those people that you think "where did she/he come from?" and then you find out that they have been on anything and everything to try to make the break. She certainly worked hard at it.

Maireas · 23/12/2023 13:26

Tom Bower didn't use the Daily Mail. He's not that daft @unbelieveable22 . He's listed his sources.
You may not like the book, you may disagree with the premise and/or his points, but he's certainly done a lot of research, not just skimmed the tabloids.
It's easy to label people, isn't it.

Maireas · 23/12/2023 13:27

I agree, @CallmeSand . Meghan has had to develop a lot of skills. Acting jobs didn't fall into her lap. She's certainly had to self promote and make her own luck.

He didn't exclusively use the Daily Mail. He quoted from a couple of articles, but he used many other sources too - all of them referenced.

He also didn't use anonymous sources - He has accredited quotes from many named people.

You may not like the idea of the book- but I'd encourage you to actually read it, rather than depend on inaccuracies posted about it on SM.

Maireas · 23/12/2023 13:44

Excellent points, @MrsFinkelstein .
Plus, it's entirely possible to read a biography and not completely believe every claim, and use some critical thinking.
