A continuing civilised and enjoyable discussion of all things relating to Endgame. Please keep posts on topic - I do not want to have to invoke Ross Gellar again!

”she (Camilla) had a reputation, or image, to rehabilitate”

Not as much as you do now I’d wager H.

The word ‘reputation’ when used about a woman is a nasty poke of a slur.

But come here you tae me, sonny. I’ve a mirror that you might want to look into before you start flinging shite - ye wee nyaff. 🌱

Camilla went about "rehabilitation" in exactly the same was as Sophie and Edward.

They didn't engage, kept their heads down, got on with what they were meant to be doing, and waited for it all to blow over. Which took a decade or so, but they got there.

thebellagio · 12/12/2023 20:17

The thing that strikes me most is that respect is earned, not expected.

Sophie, Camilla, and even Kate all took time laying the groundwork. They’ve spent time getting to know their causes, doing the grunt work of opening car parks on a rainy day in the arse end of nowhere, listening to other people talk. And as a result there is respect from the public and the press.

meghan didn’t seem to understand that she had to work her way up. She would have to do the boring (yet crucial) aspects such as opening a community centre or a men’s shed, and in return she would be rewarded with the royal premieres. Again, this comes back time and time again to Harry being a shit husband.

ArcaneWireless · 12/12/2023 20:19

And in my mind they all achieved it @EdithWeston

Some won’t be convinced. Some will conveniently forget that no-one came out of it pretty at the time. 🌱

IcedPurple · 12/12/2023 20:23

The whole Covid thing would have sheltered them, given them time to have the kids quietly and for MM to learn more about the role and history of the monarchy, and get to know the family.

You're assuming she wanted to get the know the family and learn about the monarchy. All the evidence suggests that she believed she had nothing to learn and thought she knew best.

rosyglowcondition · 12/12/2023 20:28

I think it's clear from very early on the intention was to 'hit the ground running'... as in running off to Hollywood as fast as they could to dish the dirt on the family and earn megabucks. Unsurprisingly that is exactly what they achieved.

Maireas · 12/12/2023 20:37

It's interesting - very soon after the wedding, someone posted that Harry and Meghan were seen looking at houses in California. I thought - that's nonsense! She's becoming a UK citizen, they're going to be working royals here! Just shows you.

Their timing was also poor as it was completely obvious his GPs would die within the next few years. Although I don’t think there was a lot of genuine thought put into it. They thought they would go and make millions, which they have, not as much as they thought, but the gravy train is now running out of steam. I don’t think there was ever a plan b.

JSMill · 12/12/2023 20:52

@LeggyLegsEleven I don't even think there was a plan A! They flounced off to Canada and refused to listen to anyone who advised them to stop and think.

Honestly Scottish people have the best words! My late dm would have called H & M are pair of scunners!

miri1985 · 12/12/2023 19:37

Just did a search there in Endgame for "anderson" and theres nothing about Marcus Anderson or Soho but it did flag up Anderson Cooper and its shocking to read how Harry described Camilla, its like hes describing Camilla from the tv show the Windsors, it comes off much worse when its written than when he said it IMHO

Looking at that text excerpt, "dangerousness"...what's wrong with good old "danger"!

Maireas · 12/12/2023 20:56

Scots English is the best.

Agree. He really failed to inform her. And she was too dazzled by her own opinion of herself.

She doesn't understand that it's the role, not the person. And that respect beyond the role is earned over years not automatically granted.

EdithWeston · 12/12/2023 20:58

When I have a nasty cynical moment, I think it happened at exactly the time they chose. They said they had to announce because the press forced their hand. That was back in the days before the multiple tellings of "their truth" clouded the public perception of their accuracy

But they were phenomenally unlucky with the timing of the start of the pandemic. They lost all the momentum they might otherwise have generated.

I'm fair scunnered by the pair of them. Why do we have to mince our words.

ArcaneWireless · 12/12/2023 21:06

Me tae. (I adore scunner as a word)

Nithin but a pair o’ gowks.

And doublin’ doon? Glaikit gowks.

StartupRepair · 12/12/2023 21:07

I think the bad blood with Sophie is because being so close to the queen, she saw first hand the pain that Harry and Meghan inflicted on her and Philip. I think in her deep grief when the Queen died, she perhaps conveyed some fury towards them, even just in icy silence when sharing the car.

Yes I remembered seeing a Blind Gossip entry on it, it was before Archie was even born. Allegedly they had their “people” out in the area surrounding LA looking for a suitable house for them. When I read it I thought “no way”, but when they announced they were leaving and landed themselves in Canada I have to admit I thought “won’t be long before they’re in California”.

I’ve thought for a long, long time it was always their plan to GTF as soon as they could. It explains why they never took up any offers of help or advice (why expend the effort when you’re only planning on doing 12-18mos?), MM didn't get rid of her US agent or PR firm, kept a storage locker in Canada full of clothing and other items, and their alleged refusal to be anything but unhappy. Taken all together it seems clear that it was always their plan to stay for a time to get the Royal Wedding and give MM a patina only formed by royal status and connections, before bouncing off onto bigger and better things. Every time they make out like they were forced to leave through circumstances or press intrusion or whatever, they just lose more and more credibility to me.

She doesn't understand that it's the role, not the person. And that respect beyond the role is earned over years not automatically granted.

I think you could apply this to both of them.

I'd also add that just as you can also earn respect, you can also "earn" derision and no title (by birth or marriage) can insulate you from that.

JSMill · 12/12/2023 21:23

Glaikit! I haven't heard that word in such a long time!

DelilahJane · 12/12/2023 21:24

For those who have read Endgame. Is there any mention of the first televised speech KCIII made when he became King?

I would like to know what H&M thought about K&W being made P&PoW while all they got was "I want also to express my love for Harry and Meghan as they continue to build their lives overseas"
