La Pom Pom Girl is doing the Double Dutch. But who is turning the skipping ropes? Part three/trois/drie of the continuing discussion of Endgame by Omid Scobie. Previous thread:

(I don't see what was wrong with Kate and William 'waiting' to get married anyway. They had a break, and then got back together and made a commitment, which is alleged to have involved William putting a stop to his own friends' snobby behaviour. It all sounds completely mad really.)

There are often snarky narratives around long relationships like this, not just in Royal circles. There's the implication that the male has settled, been brow beaten into submission with a woman who has the tenacity of a terrier with a rat, and is just in it because he can't be bothered to look elsewhere (but will probably end up cheating). It's all quite misogynistic. There's never a narrative that the woman might be the one biding her time to suss out whether the relationship is right for her long term.

I find it extremely disappointing that in challenging the highly dysfunctional House of Windsor and their 'circles', H&M now appear on the face of it to be gunning for a woman, Kate, who married into it and has been subjected to so much social snobbery herself.

Badly done.

Rather than critique of dysfunction, it's now coming across as unhinged and bitter jealousy of one woman.

MaturingCheeseball · 02/12/2023 11:47

The trouble is if the Palace replies, then the Press (and of course social media) will have a field day.

It’s impossible to disprove vague allegations. The only thing you can do is disprove a lot of what else was said.

And the “Katie Keen” thing is a great start at showing the sentiments behind any attack, ie no one has ever heard of this nickname, but Meghan in her own voice has said she was a major fan of this comic. As others have observed, Omid Scobie is British and would be unfamiliar with this comic.

'Im the smart one, not the pretty one' MM told Mindy Kaling.

See.... polarising girls as 'smart one' or 'pretty one' is once again quite misogynistic and putting women and girls into boxes. Categorising them and limiting them.

Considering she is a much vaunted and self proclaimed feminist, I am disappointed that MM seems to buy into the stereotypes she then claims to reject and work against.

Excellent point. I'm not sure she's proven herself to be particularly smart either.

Completely on the nose. I hadn’t even considered that.

I am constantly amazed that someone who was a working member of the RF for 5 minutes , has so much to say and so much information that 4 years after flouncing off we are still being drip fed grievances.
And for someone who is supposedly a feminist , Meghan is clearing gunning for Catherine . And for a couple so against online bullying their silence is deafening.

I've just watched a US interview with OS, where he is heavily hinting that his source for the letter is a Palace aid. And also that not many of Meghan's friends want to speak for her because she can speak for herself these days, but that she's not speaking to him either. Interesting - could be that he's covering tracks and defecting the narrative to palace leakers, could be that the Palace has a disgruntled employee who has shared confidential information with OS. If it's the latter, that shouldn't be hard to work out. How many palace staff will be privy to the King's private correspondence?

The Katie Keen remark is damning. How cruel and unpleasant this all is.
All so unnecessary.

spanieleyes · 02/12/2023 12:28

Talk about passing the buck!
So, originally it was some poor Dutch translator who " added in" two names and and now it's a palace aide!

NovemberAutumn · 02/12/2023 12:30

passing the buck and completely lacking in integrity. And I think that is how OS rolls. And tbh I think that is how PH and MM roll.

It's pretty shameful.

He's backtracking because he knows that if the Palace does sue, MM will be dragged into any court case as the potential source of the letter. So if he starts spinning the narrative now it was someone else, it takes the heat off her.

But it's just so ridiculous. He makes it clear in the book that he's been shut out by the Palace so now we're expected to believe that someone very, very, very close to the King – because who else would be able to access his private correspondence – agreed to be his source on a book that aims to bring down the Monarchy?

He's clearly in panic mode now.

Bookworm1111 · 02/12/2023 12:35

This from today's DM:

However The Mail understands that Buckingham Palace has also been internally investigating who could have seen the letters from their end.
They are considered so deeply personal that only a 'tiny handful' of people are believed to have seen them and there is 'extreme confidence' that the leak didn't come from them.

His story changes every day. A pretty good sign he's lying his arse off and covering up.

I ran outta gas. I had a flat tire. I didn't have enough money for cab fare. My tux didn't come back from the cleaners. An old friend came in from outta town. Someone stole my car. There was an earthquake, a terrible flood, locusts! It wasn't my fault! I swear to God!

Any 'aide' who is privy to the King's personal correspondence would have to be very high ranking and easily identifiable. No way such a person would blab to a mouthy hack like Scobie and thereby run the near certain risk of losing their job.

There is no doubt in my mind that Meghan is his source. She has to be.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 02/12/2023 12:41

It’s impossible to disprove vague allegations

As said before that's probably why they were kept vague; so much more fun to watch folk insisting it "must have been" this or that than to show some integrity and back up what's been claimed

We see it on here all the time when some say a thread's full of racism, even when MNHQ - who are rightly pretty hot on this - have deleted almost nothing.
Ask for examples of this alleged racism though, and it all goes quiet

Pathetic

AutumnCrow · 02/12/2023 12:51

OS is playing with fire here, if he's even close to alleging that someone with malevolent intent has been ferreting around in the private & personal papers of a Head of State (and presumably passing on that information to him).

And I think this is a weak spot on the parts of OS, MM and PH - they have repeatedly failed to recognise the significance of Charles being Head of State (of the UK and many other states) and the resources that flow to and from that as far as investigations and legal clout are concerned. If this affair is deemed to be a matter of national security and diplomatic concern - the alleged theft or copying of personal papers of the Head of State is serious shit - then OS is suddenly playing with the big boys and girls.

Maireas · 02/12/2023 12:51

A "Palace Aid" my arse.
Scobie must think we're all idiots.

ArcaneWireless · 02/12/2023 12:52

Sometimes folk put two and two together. And sometimes it isn’t the oft quoted 5 but the actual 4. (although 3 is more likely in this example).

I’m unfamiliar with that American comic.

I read the Twinkle as a bairn.

And not even fuckin’ Nurse Nancy can make this better…

Vespanest · 02/12/2023 12:53

The palace could be clever here, they usually rise above but in this instance could actually used the privacy of Meghan as a reason to pursue Scobie. Especially as it was mainly Meghans letters referenced.

I'd imagine that access to the private apartments is quite limited, let alone access to private correspondence. A handful of people at most, and those carefully and discreetly vetted. So I'm not buying this 'royal aide gone rogue.'

American here, can’t recall ever hearing of Katie Keene. Just looked it up.

The misogyny is at least out in the open now. It was always there, along with the false dichotomy. Pretty vs smart. Meghan vs Kate. It’s not Kate we are hearing from; it’s always Meghan comparing herself to Kate either openly or more subtly. The Oprah interview, Meghan minimized Kate’s media experiences. Also indicated it was her crying and not Kate. (Which is funny, because I imagine if Kate did cry she would never want the public to know.)

I thought from the original shopping story that it was a tactic by Meghan to try and put herself in the same plain because she felt unworthy or whatever.

And yet the palace themselves expected us to buy it over the disclosure of Anne and Timothy Lawrence's letters to each other, around the time her divorce was announced

And that alleged leaker was never identified either ... quelle surprise

AliceOlive · 02/12/2023 13:03

I’m beginning to think the H&M are trying to provoke a response now.

You know what’s really frustrating? When you want a fight or even dialogue but the other side won’t give it to you.

ArcaneWireless · 02/12/2023 13:06

How tiring it must be to go through life being so bitter and comparing yourself with folk like that eh @AliceOlive ?

Happy folk don’t go through their days making other folk feel rubbish about themselves. And that goes for her husband. They spread joy. Not shite.

Comparison is the thief of joy and despite protestations to the contrary, it must be a miserable existence for them.

And you reap what you sow eventually.
