woke too early

Meghan probably didn't understand it takes years of being dutiful and keeping your head down to become fully part of the inner sanctum, even when you're already married in. Catherine and Sophie seem to have made it now but it's taken both of them a couple of decades to become 'proper' family.

Is this really the most we can expect from our Head of State? To abuse the women who marry into the family to such an extent that they have to be completely broken to fit their stupid archaic mould? Women who marry into other European Royal Families are allowed to have personalities but all we will accept are some kind of 'painted dolls'? No wonder William and Harry couldn't find any aristos to marry them. They are far from a catch.

I'm so confused by this. I've seen the passage that mentions Charles's name, but what does the book actually say about Kate? Are these the copies that are getting pulled from shelves?

Yes this is the text in the Dutch version. It’s 200+ pages on from the reference to Charles so they were not immediately linked. If you scroll down the thread there is a photo of the page in Dutch.

@Bigcoatweather "As a non-white person with very mixed heritage on all sides of the family, I was certainly curious and speculated with excitement on how my children would look. I couldn’t wait to see."

Of course. How would you have felt if your Pil's had been speculating about what colour your kids would be though?

Roussette · 30/11/2023 09:42

Matronic6 · 30/11/2023 09:39

I despair that you wrote such a condescending/judgemental post when you lack the basic comprehension skills to deduce GP meant Grandparent.

Unclench! I've acknowledged I got GP wrong. No need for a PA thanks!

TrailingFig · 30/11/2023 09:42

Of course GP is Grandparent in this context.

We’ve had similar conversations in our family and as for how the mother felt. She instigated it.
surely it’s natural for a Mother to wonder what her baby will be like. Or is that an unnecessary thought now

Emotionalsupportviper · 30/11/2023 09:42

Roussette · 30/11/2023 09:38

I'm lost! So the GP is also the grandparent? Does that actually happen? Surely the mother of the child who will be 'one quarter asian' would be allocated a different GP in case there were complications

Had the acronym "DGP" been used, would it have helped?

Showmethemoneyyy · 30/11/2023 09:43

Roussette · 30/11/2023 09:32

Exactly. And why on earth is a GP discussing what a baby she will be the Doctor for and who will be 'one quarter Asian' talking about what this baby will look like with her (the Doctor's that is...) relatives.

I despair..

I suspect GP in this context was meant as grandparent….

Samcro · 30/11/2023 09:43

the amount of posters who say it never happened and are making excuse is mind blowing.
no one except the people having the conversation know.
there is a lot of difference to Meghan and Harry talking about what colour there child might be. to 2 people having that conversation when Meghan wasn't there.

and its not Princess Catherine. she is either the POW or Princess William.

Mirabai · 30/11/2023 09:43

Ohnoooooooo · 30/11/2023 09:34

While I am not keen on King Charles - for f…k sake - I am mixed race and I wondered what colour skin my children would have. Context is everything but I would be very surprised myself if H&M did not look at each others vastly different looks and wonder basic stuff like would their children have ginger hair, what skin tone etc. wondering what a baby would look does not instantly make you racist there has to be more to it to make it racist.

Wondering yourself and two relatives, you don’t know very well in an exclusively white institution, speculating is a very different matter.

It wouldn’t have mattered one bit. I actually would have been more offended if they didn’t give it any thought tbh

@Roussette sorry, big ol’ cross post, you’re all too fast for me..

Yes, I would've understood DGP or GM.

Thank you @Blueroses99 !

So Charles's name came out first because people hadn't reached the bit about Kate at that point, which is 200 pages further in?

Also, would Charles and Meghan really exchange letters? It seems a very cumbersome way to communicate, especially considering they live on different continents...! Letters can easily get lost in the post too!

mantyzer · 30/11/2023 09:45

This looks terrible for the image of the Royal Family.
As well as this we have had the Lady Hussey - no where are you really from.
William and Kate's colonial tour look and meeting black children through a chain link fence.
William and Kate meeting the Obama's in a room where someone had to place a vase to obscure the title of a painting that referred to negro.

It is all a terrible look. The Royal Family is supposed to be all about soft diplomacy. And they aren't doing too well at the moment.

Mirabai · 30/11/2023 09:46

Someone has helpfully posted the context in the book upthread, I will paste it here:

"Even after Meghan and Charles by letter discussed about probable unconscious bias within the family, after it was revealed that the King and Princess of Wales took part in such conversations about Archie, Kate has avoided discussing the subject with her sister-in-law."

Not picking on you. Apologies

Willyoujustbequiet · 30/11/2023 09:30

I'm from a mixed race family and I agree with @Ilovecleaning. It is absolutely self indulgent shite.

Ok. About Meghan:

  • when she first came on the scene in the papers pre- engagement, I didn’t even know or notice she was mixed race.
  • when it was made clear she was mixed race I thought ‘Great, it’s about time the RF was more diverse. Might shake them up a bit and it’s good for the 15% of the uk who are non- white who are not represented in the RF.
  • I first got bad vibes when she had only ONE relative at her wedding. Weird.
  • she gave it a matter of months before she gave up and disappeared with Harry, although I do suspect that H was a willing follower
  • I thought it was strange that H had not schooled her in royal protocol at all.
  • My gut feeling is that a lot of people simply did not take to her: she seemed to enjoy the limelight too much. She seemed to bask in it. Something insincere about her.
  • perhaps many people would like to say ‘ Sorry, Meghan but we don’t trust you; you are attention-seeking, you seem insincere, your smiles seem false - this has nothing to do with your race, but it is easier for you to say it is racism rather than deal with your attitude and behaviour.
Bobsyouraunty · 30/11/2023 09:48

Reading the comments on here is hilarious.

I cannot believe people can be so shocked to think the royal family (The British empire that sought to colonise and enslave countries in Africa. And treat other nations appallingly) could say something racist.

The obsessional hate against MM demonstrates said attitudes….

DewinDwl · 30/11/2023 09:49

Oohmontydon · 30/11/2023 07:55

Why do you believe that?

DH is around the same age as Kate and moved in similar circles, similar education... I have met his friends from school and some of their families... there are many Boris Johnson types (used to getting away with thinking, saying and doing the most shocking stuff, without consequences) and plenty of enablers.

Ilovecleaning · 30/11/2023 09:49

Sorry Willyoujustbequiet - my post was meant to be a general one and not a direct reply to your post.😊

Ok: your original reply should have been ‘ you should be embarrassed’ but I’m not…

No, people can embarrass themselves without realising it.

NonPlayerCharacter · 30/11/2023 09:56

My gut feeling is that a lot of people simply did not take to her: she seemed to enjoy the limelight too much. She seemed to bask in it. Something insincere about her.

But what exactly?

She turned up to engagements dressed well and smiling. That's literally the job. That's what Kate does and is praised for.

Maybe people didn't take against Meghan entirely of their own accord, but do you not think the unjust way the media reported it might have affected people's perception of her? Kate dazzled in a one-shoulder dress, Meghan was completely inappropriate when she did the exact same thing? Why was the media so against Meghan, and why did so many people accept the double standard without wondering where it came from?

Can you believe this piece - "black sheep", "If there is issue from her alleged union with Prince Harry, the Windsors will thicken their watery, thin blue blood and Spencer pale skin and ginger hair with some rich and exotic DNA. Miss Markle’s mother is a dreadlocked African-American lady from the wrong side of the tracks" and so on - was ever published and is still easily found online? And the "straight outta Compton" stuff?
