So who are the 2 royals who commented on Archie's skin now that Piers Morgan has named them on live tv

They commented on skin colour. Is that racist?
They didn’t discriminate on skin colour.
I could be totally wrong, I’m a white Irish person.

MyopicBunny · 30/11/2023 02:12

@MeMySonAnd1 they are entitled to them because Harry was born a prince.

Your comments show what a joke the monarchy actually is. The monarchy is not a democracy where people like you or the rest of the UK public decide who is and who isn't 'entitled' to be royal, that's the whole point! And therein lies the stupidity of having a monarchy at all.

Exactly. This kind of talk shows how pointless the monarchy is today. They should all lose the nonsense pomp titles and allowances, and get real jobs (or write tell-all books or become influencers). At least back in the day the king actually ruled and made treaties and could behead you if you annoyed him.

There really is no need for royals anymore.

It depends whether it was ‘concern’ over skin colour or more an ‘I wonder’.
I believe that subconscious bias exists. I don’t ‘think’ I’m racist, yet I’ve never dated anyone other than white European - I must have a bias.
I believe most people would have a bias. Even Meghan herself in her choice to straighten her hair or marry white men : could that be bias? I’m not saying it’s unacceptable bias - but I think it’s there.

I often measure things by intent to cause harm - so if the comments made with the intention to cause harm : then they are wrong and should be called out.
Whether that needs to be played out on a world stage and monetised is questionable.
I also think you can’t call out racism in others without addressing/trying to excuse or ‘glossing over’ past and very well documented incidents of racism (Harry in fancy dress/comments made in the army).

Great post!

I've never dated anyone other than white European, but there weren't many other 'options' where I lived in the 80s when I was dating. I do consider men from varying nationalities and races to be attractive though, and would be totally open to dating them if I was single and not too old to be arsed dating any man!

I agree too, it was a very good post that you did here @Planum

I don't think the monarchy is pointless at all. They are 'used' as diplomats, smoothing over international relations. They are charity figureheads. They give the likes of us someone to gossip about!! They provide continuity, tradition and stability that is centuries old, and they are far more glamorous and interesting than politicians! Nobody can 'do' pageantry, pomp and circumstance like the Royals can, and that is something we British should value.

You would be complaining mightily if the King ruled as in actually make the rules!! Lord knows people have plenty to say about politicians and you have elected them! WTF would you want anyone to have the power to behead you either??!

Hmmm. Diplomats? Sure. Maybe Kate can help broker some peace for the current Middle East crisis. Charity heads? Lots of non royal charity heads. Plenty of celebrities for gossip and since when is gossip a good thing anyway?

I think some British value pomp and pageantry. Others despise it and see it as utterly pointless. Blanket, broad assessment of British values, probably an older person's view back from when the Empire was still that.

Looking at polls many Gen Z's and even millennials couldn't give a toss about the royals.

I agree with this too although I'm very, very cautious to verbalise this because of the "one drop rule". But I am BAME myself and my daughter mixed race (DH white). I can categorically say that the racism half-white kids get is not comparable to what fully ethnic kids get. It's often the reverse...people love to fetishise and put mixed race children on a pedestal, especially if they are physically beautiful. Everywhere they go, they constantly hear people, often complete strangers, telling them how gorgeous they look. It's very bizarre. I absolutely believe that mixed race kids can perceive racist experiences and be affected on a deep level by those. However this would also depend a lot on socio-economic factors. Meghan's white-passing appearance, wealth and the elite circles she moves in makes it hard to believe that she is truly subject to racist abuse and slurs in the same way an economically disadvantaged African-american girl would be.

I think that is why she was able to pass in America but the one-drop rule applied in the UK massively due to bloodline and inheritance. To deny the existence of this, is people just being obtuse. Based on Meghan's colour, contemplating what her children's colour would look like should not have been a conversation. Yes, there is a point that her children might have what you consider black features, but based on her family tree. The chances of that are very slim. Not only is Meghan missed race, but I think her mum is mixed race.

I thought this was addressed in the leaked Charles letter before his coronation to stop people from thinking he was the racist. The way this story has played out and how it was talked about makes me believe there is more to it.

Mylovelygreendress · 29/11/2023 22:57

Really ? What is your evidence ? The only confirmed royal racist is Harry but you may know different !?

This reminds me of the "I ain't racist" Sharon Osborn clip that goes round every now and then. If you know, you know.

squishee · 30/11/2023 03:57

Yekaterinap · 29/11/2023 22:49

Okay so Philip, Harry and Princess Michael of Kent. Anyone else?

Lady Colin Campbell named Princess Anne on her YT channel, but said that Anne's comment had been MISconstrued as racist.

debbrianna · 30/11/2023 04:04

Everyone needs to think twice and use common sense when comparing Meghan's heritage with your Nigerian friend, wife or husband. Think about it.

saffronsoup · 30/11/2023 04:07

How are names mistakenly and accidentally added to a translation of a book? I don’t get what happened…

The discussion around what the baby could look like is nothing without context. My Asian friend and her white DH had those discussions about each of their children; a common discussion in their opinion. Again, context is everything.
.
The vitriol and hatred for MM on here though is saddening. I'm personally not a Kate fan but I don't feel the need to denigrate her so viciously because like every person on this thread, I don't know her.

Amazing how many people are suddenly ‘fascinated by genetics’ when it comes to speculating about a child’s skin colour.

It’s a purely science-based conversation. Of course.

I must be the only person who didn’t have multiple antenatal conversations speculating on my child’s appearance and who wouldn’t dream of raising a child’s hypothetical skin colour as a topic of conversation.

Not just you. I have written on another thread about how upset I was by my MILs speculation about how brown my kids would be. Her comments while not rude went down like a lead balloon. She is a racist btw as is FIL who has only recently started seeing me like a person and not through the lens of my ethnicity - I have been with DH for 20 years.

Amazing how so many people know celebrities so well: " x is jealous of y", "so-and-so is not racist" despite so many public instances that suggest a general atmosphere of tolerated racism in the RF.

One drop ruler exists in the UK. The fact that Meghan has more white heritage % wise than black but she is considered black on Mn, UK, and America is the one blood drop rule. It refers to any drop of blackness that will genetically exclude you from being white, pure white.

Can I add every time something racist or perceived as racist, the royal family pulls out a black person? Would that count? I think there will be one in 123... Soon

jesterdourt · 30/11/2023 04:41

It’s sad that the media pitted Kate & Meghan against each other but it’s sadder that so much of the public wanted that.

QueenRainbow · 30/11/2023 04:49

What nonsense. I am not saying some members of the royal family aren’t racist (it’s not like I personally know them) but nearly everyone would make some passing comment about what a baby will look like, be that skin tone, hair colour etc to automatically go to racism seems a bit disingenuous to me. We have many different skin tones in my wider family from chalky white like me to black/brown. We would always wonder what tone a baby may be, nothing to do with racism here though. I just think unfortunately H&M are looking to discredit their family which is very sad.

Emotionalsupportviper · 30/11/2023 04:52

caringcarer · 29/11/2023 22:14

I don't believe either King Charles or Princess Catherine are racists. I think Meghan hated Princess Catherine so much she'd say anything to get her discredited if she could.

I agree.

The accusation is absolute rubbish IMO.

I think Meghan Markle finally has realised that there is no way that the RF are going to cave to her and Harry's demands, they have" royally" stuffed up in the US and have hardly any fan base now, and has taken the attitude that if she can't bring the RF to heel then they will do everything they possibly can to destroy them as an institution. And her personal jealousy of Catherine's popularity is off the scale.

(I didn't used to be pro-Royalist, but I am now. I've seen the value lately of having a head of state with no political affiliation - whether they should be as personally wealthy is another argument, but as representatives of the country they seem to do a good job.)

To me the only family member who differentiates regarding race is Meghan herself. She has stirred up a racial hatred in the UK which never existed. Yes - there were racist individuals, unfortunately, but as a country we were very tolerant - her self-serving comments have caused a lot of tension IMO and her husband has encouraged and supported her. They should both be ashamed. Their behaviour damages others.
