I'm not sure what is the correct etiquette for carrying on a thread, but here we are. Thanks to @BoxedandRibboned for the original thread.

MN say it's not libellous, so I guess it isn't. I'm sure they wouldn't want anything on their site that is!

BethDuttonsTwin · 28/11/2023 17:51

Well if it was Charles then that would certainly explain Harry’s swift detour into”unconscious bias”. Just as when QE was alive it definitely wasn’t her who was the racist.

Whoever holds the purse strings, ability to remove titles and generally has all the influence gets a pass for “racism” with H & M it seems.

FromEden · 28/11/2023 17:51

As an aside, where are all the h&m cheerleaders on this thread to defend this book?

QueenOfHertz · 28/11/2023 17:52

Back in the day I was head of Publicity for a big publishing company. I’ve been wondering today what I would have done when the editorial department presented me with this little nugget. I suspect I would have argued the case to farm it out to a specialist book publicity expert, paid them £££ and washed my hands of the whole sorry little mess.

But reading Twitter it seems that OS wanted to do the publicity himself so that would have saved me the job. I do know that I would be drinking a lot of gin tonight.

Serenster · 28/11/2023 17:52

Looks like the publisher is now saying it was an error in translation.

I suppose it’s also possible they wanted to provoke the person involved to fess up by “accidentally” throwing guilt on someone it’s not. Or is that too Machiavellian? 🤣

I find your attempts to tell everyone else what to do very patronsising and unnecessary and calming down appears to me just what you need to do.

If you are concerned about posts report them and MN can make their decisions about their site. But I don't think individual posters are at risk and need your unsolicited advice.

Seriously?! My initial comment was advisory. I wasn't barking orders at anyone. Direct your nastiness at someone else please.

Error in translation? Aye. My hefty derrière.

Just because someone is trying to spoon feed some questionable solids to us doesn’t mean we have to open wide for more….

Yes, I was wondering that too. They usually pop up any time the haloed pair are mentioned, but nada! I'm almost disappointed, but not quite Grin

This book launch is horrendous for M and H.

And no one believes they didn't collaborate with Scobie.

I hope Scobie gets sued.

I think the 'royal racist' thing has dragged on for so long that frankly nobody much cares anymore. It was shocking at the time, but the time was two and a half years ago. Time for the accusers to put up or shut up.

Plus, given how vague and contradictory the original accusations were, I'm not sure how any official statement could have been issued. Do you know exactly what all your aunts, uncles, cousins and in laws might or might not have said a few years ago? I doubt it.

I think since Harry backtracked with 'unconscious bias' even the hardline RF critcis have had to go, oh so it wasn't actually racist then? Just a clumsy comment?

So this won't really impact the RF further, but just makes H&M look bad for beoing assciated with this vicious nobody.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 28/11/2023 17:57

I admit, I am curious as to how the Dutch translator was given a proof of the book to translate that contained that passage

I know you're much better versed in these issues than many of us, Serenster, but doesn't that depend on what the "original passage" said?
Reportedly Scobie's claiming that Charles wrote to Meghan about the various allegations, and it doesn't seem much of a stretch for that to be interpreted, correctly or not, as it being him who actually said whatever-it-was

I'm the very last to defend any of the RF and Charles most of all, but I'm not going to get excited because some fool has once again chucked around allegations with no detail, no context and no proof

Oh don’t! It’s been lovely to be able to discuss all the ins and outs of this without having to constantly duck/swerve our very own accusations of racism/hate.

They backtrack. But then retrack.
Then backtrack.

It's all power games.

If they'd backtracked why did they get their spokesperson to drag it all up again?

I really wish they would just go away. Everything they seem to touch just seems to be poisoned.

They really need to get over it and try and make a new life for themselves. Not rehash the same victim statements over and over again.

Tetchypants · 28/11/2023 17:58

What a stupid amount of fuss over nothing. Totally normal to wonder which parent a baby will take after in terms of hair colour, eye colour, height, skin tone.

Another nail in the coffin for the Sussexes. What on earth are they doing trusting that plastic narcissist? In fact, I think the backlash will be so negative, they will fall out and Scobie’s next book will be dishing the dirt on them.

I just hope they don't throw the poor translator under the bus. It should've been copy-, line- and proof- edited by others after it was translated.

Bookworm1111 · 28/11/2023 17:15

Do not mention the person here! The Dutch publisher is pulling it because it's libellous, so for heaven's sake don't repeat it.

You look pretty directive and insistent here to me.
And agitated, with your bolding and 'heavens sake.'

And you do know I'm free to keep responding to you as much as I choose to don't you?

Let’s try not to derail the thread with little infights?

Mymilkshakebringsallthepapstomycar · 28/11/2023 18:01

Actually I don't think that's the case @MalagaNights . I received a lecture about how UB turns into racism if it remains unchecked and nothing is done to resolve the matter within the institution. And Harry did waffle something along these lines when he did his reverse ferret in the Tom Bradby interview. However, the RF did try to do something about it shortly thereafter, sacking Lady Susan Hussey over the Ngozi Fulani accusations of racism. William had his own godmother summarily dismissed. And who undermined that swift action? Harry and Meghan, issuing a statement that they loved Lady Susan, and her remarks wouldn't have meant any harm. Make of that double standard what you will. Harry speaking on behalf of a woman who says she has perceived racism to say it didn't happen; but say the same about Meghan's perceptions, and you are excusing racism.

Well at least we seem to have established it's not libellous, so we can all calm down.

Cloud9isnowclosed · 28/11/2023 18:04

The Dutch royal reporter who broke this earlier said in a little video on twitter that the passage doesn't exist in the English version and the text says (paraphrasing) "An identity was confirmed : XX ".
So it can't really be a translation issue.

I suppose it could be a typographical issue - if the original text read
" In the exchange of letters an identity was confirmed. X* *wrote to say no malice was meant " ( if it meant somehow putting in a colon rather than a full stop, that would work as an explanation and no names revealed (although still doesn't answer if the passage exists in other language versions)...

Edited because random bolding....

Yes it gets all so trcky to follow, so most people just give up and call bullshit.

If it was UB back then, but then went unaddressed wouldn't there need to be further incidents of racism to show it had dveleoped unchecked?

It just illustrates how using the accusation of racism without sharing the evidnece just leads to dangerous territory and more care should have been taken.

Quite

Maybe that explains why they were vague and contradictory in the first place?
