According to the daily mail, Charles put Jimmy Saville on a long list of names of potential godfathers for Harry.

Not a chance on religion alone

It's not unknown. Sometimes it is referred to as a sponsor. My parents were godparents to two of my cousins, parents RC, cousins C of E.

I only have 1 RC godparent.

I used to love watching Jim'll Fix It as a child but I always thought he was a bit odd. Probably more in the way he looked. I didn't really know anything about child abuse either so identifying him as a possible predator wasn't even a consideration. I think in those days most children who were abused weren't believed. I would like to think he wouldn't get away with it these days but sometimes I really wonder.

I grew up with Savile regularly on the TV - TOTP, Jim'll Fix It. I will be honest and say he didn't strike me as creepy or give off any of the vibes many retrospectively say they felt. Old and boring, yes - predatory, no.

I suspect many who were not themselves victims, or personally acquainted with victims, are being wise after the event.

I know someone who says she always knew he wasn't ok, but I think she is being wise after the event. I would have said bit of an odd ball, not very attractive, but he seems to do so much good work for charity and in hospitals etc. etc.

@littleripper thank you for the information about how many times you told the BBC. Of course I know about the hoo ha when it all came out but I haven't read any books about him, just heard the usual news-type things like the nurses saying that they used to tell the patients to pretend they were asleep when he came round.

I have links with Leeds and must have sometimes been there when he was forging his early career. Going up to Roundhay Park was always a nice thing to do but now it has a vague taint in my mind because I believe 'The Duchess' had a flat overlooking the park in her later days, and I can't undo that.

With respect. You aren't royalty

cathyandclaire · 10/10/2023 15:41

Jimmy Savile definitely lived in a penthouse flat overlooking Roundhay Park, on the Oakwood side. It was his main residence back in the 90s and noughties, no idea if he moved his mum in. He was often at the Flying Pizza in Roundhay but unsurprisingly they’ve taken down all his pictures.

I also thought he was weird, unfunny and creepy but had no inkling of the depths of his depravity. That’s despite a paediatric nurse at Stoke Mandeville ( I was a student) telling me he was not a nice man and they’d banned him from the children’s ward. I just thought he was arrogant and self-serving.

LifeExperience · 10/10/2023 15:46

Harry was born in 1984. I don't think that even the future king could see into the future.

everetting · 09/10/2023 17:49

People always say that. But generally what they say about the ROYAL FAMILY TURNS OUT TO BE TRUE.

No it really doesn’t.

pilates · 10/10/2023 15:57

Interesting that @everetting thinks what the Mail say about the RF always turns out to be true 🤨

MartyFunkhouser · 10/10/2023 15:59

That would’ve been hilarious tbf, and Rolf Harris as the other one.

JustAMinutePleass · 10/10/2023 16:02

As Saville targetted vulnerable kids I think Prince Charles didn’t care. There was an attitude at the time that poor working class girls / girls in care homes etc were ‘asking for it’ / not kids in the same way wealthy girls were.

His mum died in the early 70s so wouldn't have been living with him there in the 90s/00s.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 10/10/2023 18:08

Ball had accepted a caution - admitting guilt - and Charles was STILL using his position to protect Ball . Writing letters to Ball too - telling him he’d see off these ‘beastly people'
A subsequent investigation asked about this and Charles people explained that Charles didn’t understand the term ‘caution’...

Precisely, Novella, though I always found it interesting that they claimed Charles "didn't understand" as opposed to "didn't know", (presumably because of the risk of the latter being instantly disproved?)

In any case if you genuinely don't understand something like that then you ask - or at least you do if you have any judgement at all
So either he's a knowing paedophile enabler or an utter fool - and yet still there are some who acknowledge him their king Hmm

CesareBorgia · 10/10/2023 18:09

I incline towards 'utter fool' taking into consideration his overall conduct.

@JustAMinutePleass Charles was stupid to get so close to such a cretin, but he certainly wasn't alone in being taken in by him - thousands of others were, too. And to suggest that Charles wouldn't have cared about young children being targeted is an outrageous slur.

I’m an Aussie and when I first moved to the UK I just couldn’t believe Jimmy Savile, I found him unbelievably sinister and creepy and I couldn’t understand why people didn’t seem to see it. He made my skin crawl.

Many many people thought he was weird and creepy. We just didn’t realise he was fucking corpses, stealing their glass eyes and having them turned into rings. Here is a kind of immunity in excess there really - if you recount that story, who the fuck would believe you? It sounds unhinged.

@Serenster

Re your church full of the ‘great and good’ Yeah that’s what happens when the ‘royals’ admire someone like Saville- Saville had the stamp of ‘approval’ for those influenced by such nonsense .

Thats why what Charles did was so wrong . you will
nondoubt claim Charles was fooled by Saville .
But perhaps you could also explain why Charles personally defended and protected even housed Peter Ball after his activities were known

And we also have Mountbatten and Van der post - Charles ‘mentors’

Saville fits into a larger picture - I include Andrew and Epstein in this - which I’d like to hear a royalist address properly

Yes, this. Van Der Post who sexually assaulted a 14 year old entrusted to his care. She then became pregnant.

Peter Ball, the convicted sex offender.

And pals with Savile. So unfortunate for Charles eh?

CesareBorgia · 10/10/2023 18:31

Charles is a poor judge of character.

OnGoldenPond · 10/10/2023 18:50

everetting · 09/10/2023 17:13

Slug really? Earl Spencer is catholic and Queen Elizabeth is his godmother.

Can't be true. That would have meant Diana was catholic as well and Charles would have been constitutionally barred from marrying her.

QOD · 10/10/2023 19:12

i was a child in those days and to be honest he did seem a bit pervy ... but so did nearly every other famous guy
smut and innuendo, hot gossip dancers, Bucks Fizz ripping skirts off, Benny Hill, Mandy Smith & Bill Wyman, the man at the corner shop, the bloke who stood at the edge of the primary school playing field and wanked ... it was a time where men just perved and a lot of the time it was excused.

QOD · 10/10/2023 19:14

also a lot of us kids were innocent in terminology. My friend told me when I was 11 that her dads friends had sex with her ... i thought it was gross that she kissed them. That's what I thought sex was.
I didn't really re remember it until i was a young adult and had changed areas and schools etc

threecupsofteaminimum · 10/10/2023 19:29

Bull. Shit.

CathyorClaire · 10/10/2023 20:02

He didn't have to.

Savile had made various unsettling revelations in interviews with the Sun the year before.

Absolutely agree.

And I'd add that the throwing up of hands in horror and claiming ignorance of the details of the latest scandal he's embroiled in then shifting the blame to lackeys is wearing very thin.

littleripper · 10/10/2023 20:16

Just adding that Irvine Welsh had a necrophilic character who was obviously Savile in his 1996 book Ecstasy.
It was well know at the BBC and by many others. No one did anything because, we, the poor working class victims had no voice and were not relevant. We still are not. How much will the BBC profit from this? Will they collect awards and thank Coogan for his superb portrayal of the monster? Will they feel very proud of themselves. You bet they will. The victims, yet again, not relevant to this excellent story.

Hippyhippybake · 10/10/2023 20:31

He was given a Papal Knighthood in 1990.
