According to the daily mail, Charles put Jimmy Saville on a long list of names of potential godfathers for Harry.

He did fool some people, people like the Royals and Thatcher who are so weird themselves they have no judgement. He did not fool the BBC, they knew and chose not to care.

I think he fooled lots of viewers so I suppose that makes us all weird and without judgement. I would think most of us out here had no idea what he was like.

Slug really? Earl Spencer is catholic and Queen Elizabeth is his godmother.

He's not.

Maireas · 09/10/2023 19:44

It's highly unlikely. They choose very different people.
I know he groomed a nation, but even so, I think it's bollox.

MrsFinkelstein · 09/10/2023 19:51

This is old news and I'm struggling to see the point in posting this, other than another stick to hit Charles with.

Savile fooled a lot of people for a very long time. Thatcher gave him a knighthood and put him in charge of Broadmoor, the Pope gave him a Vatican knighthood, he fooled NHS & BBC bosses, numerous UK charities.

Charles was not alone in being fooled by Savile.

Anyway - he isn't Harry's godfather, so to paraphrase Peter Griffin "who the hell cares?"

Maireas · 09/10/2023 20:03

I agree, @MrsFinkelstein - "another stick to hit Charles with" and a total non story.

CathyorClaire · 09/10/2023 20:24

Charles was not alone in being fooled by Savile.

He was however alone in having a whole team of people whose sole job was to look after his interests and image and who it's hard to believe were unaware of the 'open secrets' which had been swirling round Savile for years.

Savile produced a PR handbook for royals and their staff, provided marriage guidance to Diana and advised Charles regularly. Charles was also a guest at at least one private dinner held at Savile's house.

I think it's entirely possible Charles considered Savile for the godparent role.

Maireas · 09/10/2023 20:26

Well I don't.
I think insinuations about Savile and Charles are unpleasant at the very least.

CathyorClaire · 09/10/2023 20:37

I think insinuations about Savile and Charles are unpleasant at the very least.

Well we know Charles has poor judgement . Couple that with unswerving loyalty to and lobbying on behalf of a cautioned sex offender and I don't think surmising a dismissing of whatever he didn't want to hear about Savile is too much of a stretch.

Maireas · 09/10/2023 20:38

You know what? Slag Charles off all you like. But I think deliberately trying to link him to Savile is very low.

CathyorClaire · 09/10/2023 20:39

He is linked to Savile.

Inextricably.

See my other points above.

Maireas · 09/10/2023 20:40

You're suggesting something else. What a horrible thread. You carry on. I'm off.

This is a troll - we're taking this down now.

littleripper · 09/10/2023 20:50

@upinaballoon yes, the BBC allowed children, teenagers and the entire viewing public to be tricked into watching a rapist, the BBC invited him into all our livings rooms. And when I told them what he was doing in 1993, 1994 x2, 1995 and 1998 they chose to list me as a vexatious complainant and ban me from every contacting them again. When it all broke and I gave evidence to Dame Janet Smith the BBC lied again - but I had evidence. They then apologised through the enquiry and said they would pay for counselling etc. But when I contacted them I was still listed as a VC.
The BBC knew. Now they are making a disgusting drama featuring a man who sees it as a "challenge" of an acting role. A man who gleefully played Philip Green not so long ago. A man who 'did the voice' for Savile on Spitting Image.

They have not asked the victims permission to use our trauma and retraumatise us. The BBC lie and say this will examine the abuse and prevent it from ever happening in the future. That is a lie. They are making this to sell. They saw the success of the Bundy and Dahmer Netflix dramas - they know it will sell to the US and they will make huge vast profits, and none of that will go to the victims or support abuse charities.
Charles might be a fool, personally I view anyone who believes as Charles does that they are born 'better' than anyone else as a bigoted imbecile. But Charles did not empower Savile. Thatcher did not. The BBC did that and they knew what he was doing.

Jimmy Savile survivor panicked as she saw Steve Coogan dressed as him

The four-part series will trace the disgraced children's entertainer's upbringing, his early career and horrific child sex offences - despite a backlash from victims of the sex offender.

If you want a Republic why not present a cogent argument in favour of it instead of indulging in personal smears. If any institution is complicit in the disgusting tale of Jimmy Savile it is first and foremost the BBC.

CathyorClaire · 09/10/2023 21:07

Arf.

It's done day in day out.

You just don't want to hear it.

And I agree Auntie et al was complicit in the appalling Savile saga.

I still fume at Esther Rantzen who has admitted to hearing the rumours as a junior journalist but fearing for her career.

She remained silent during Savile's lifetime even while achieving fame as an investigative journalist in her own right and founding Childline.

MissingMoominMamma · 09/10/2023 21:08

I’m staggered that the film about Savile was made. It’s inappropriate in the extreme.

littleripper · 09/10/2023 21:12

@CathyorClaire I wrote to Esther Rantzen - due to the child line connection - specifically and told her what he was doing. At her home address which I got out of an autograph hunting book. The letter was not returned or replied to.

I am so sorry to hear that.

Appalling 😡

I’m literally watching the footage of his actual funeral on tv now as part of The Reckoning, the church full to bursting with the great and the good, packed with mourners, glowing eulogies and all the trappings of a military funeral. He clearly fooled an awful lot of people.

Is this true? 😳

Thank you for being so brave @littleripper
Sorry you didn’t get a good outcome for your efforts.

It’s just so odd, isn’t it? As a child and teen I always thought of him as really creepy. My sisters were the same. They always changed the channel when he came on TV. They couldn’t stand him.

I think children for the most part instinctively know when something is off, but adults or people they trust (with bad judgement) convince them it’s in their head just by the way they are accepting of the ‘dodgy’ person.

So then the child starts to doubt their own judgement.
