NY mayor cancelled a meeting with WIlliam but hasn't said why. Does anyone know more?

He cancelled 30 mins after scheduling which is weird!

everetting · 20/09/2023 15:30

That is strange.

Probably just something came up. I doubt there's any drama or scandal there, though the press are sure to try to turn it into one.

I do feel bad for William and this whole stupid "war of the brothers" that's going on. First William being "snubbed" by the UN (when Harry was invited) then William being "snubbed" by the major (when the mayor met with Harry).

Of course neither of those two things are snubs, just a case of busy politicians and organisations being far too busy to make time for a to them unimportant European prince. But William's press office are creating a rod for their own backs by being so publicly competitive and needing to be seen doing everything Harry has done. Look at that silly PR stunt photo op William's team arranged at the building opposite the UN, the headlines in the British press were "William arrives at the UN General Assembly building" (clearly trying to imply that he'd been invited to address the UN General Assembly) but he was actually visiting a completely different building which was the residence of a British consul that happened to be next door to the UN. So it's embarrassing for him, because it looks like he was jealous that Harry actually was invited to address the UN General Assembly and is trying to organise events that are vaguely UN-adjacent to compete, but by doing so, it just draws attention to the fact that not only was he not invited to address the UN General Assembly, he wasn't even invited into the building. (William did meet someone else at the UN, but that was separate from the event the Daily Mail made a big deal about.)

Whereas if he'd done his own thing and not chased any way to connect his name to the UN, and not chased meetings with the mayor, there wouldn't be this perception that he's trying to compete with Harry and failing. Would William even care about the UN if his brother hadn't been invited to speak there?

It's just not dignified or regal. He's going to be King, he needs to do his own thing and let people come to him, not chase disinterested Americans just because Harry got there first.

PrincessOfTigger · 20/09/2023 15:37

I don’t think he’s copying Harry at all, the comparisons are inevitable but he isn’t causing it.

everetting · 20/09/2023 16:02

@TheGhostofLoganRoy the interesting. The UN thing makes William look silly.
I wondered if there was a known reason the mayor cancelled because it does look like a snub. The mayor of NY is usually keen to be photographed with celebrities and royalty. And the meeting was originally agreed.

The "someone else" was the UN Secretary General wasn't it? Harry might have done a speech but don't think he got a meeting with him, it was the deputy general in that case.

everetting · 20/09/2023 17:03

What does it matter who Harry and meghan met? They did meet the UN secretary. But making this a competition just looks petty. It makes zero difference what Harry and meghan have done. They left the working Royal family years ago.
If the Palace are playing that competitive game, then it just makes the whole thing look silly.

From Page Six:

The heir to the British throne... was greeted as an international statesman at the star-studded environment summit at the Plaza Hotel — an honor that’s never been afforded to his estranged younger brother, Prince Harry.
He was given a hero’s welcome to the city by former Mayor Mike Bloomberg, who praised William for winning over “Americans of all stripes — which, as we know, is no small feat.” Bloomberg, 81, referred to the recent Gallup poll in which William was declared to be more popular in America than President Biden and former President Donald Trump.

“Prince William came out on top,” said Bloomberg. “The poll said he was viewed positively by 60 percent of Democrats and 60 percent of Republicans.America has not seen that kind of bipartisanship since 1776,” the billionaire joked.
He praised William for “building on his father and grandmother’s dedication to environmental stewardship” and said he was in a “unique position” to bring people together. “There was no Nobel for working to save the planet, so he decided to create one,” Bloomberg said of the Earthshot Prize.

Hours after arriving Monday, William had a one-on-one meeting with United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres, whom he thanked for supporting the Earthshot Prize. The pair discussed the “efforts required to accelerate the fight against climate change and protect the environment,” a UN spokesperson told Page Six. “They also discussed efforts to enhance implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals, as well as financing for development.”
In contrast, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle were given just half an hour with Deputy Secretary-General Amina Mohammed at the UN in 2021.

Among the top comments from readers:

"Somehow we didn’t get Backgrid photographs from his run, exact brands, prices and website links of his active wear, sweat bands and drink bottle nor any ‘inside scoop’ to Page Six from a Central Park coffee stand about how nice he was and how he tipped well."

LOL

Prince William went jogging in Central Park Tuesday — and no one noticed

“I decided to join the hordes of New Yorkers during their morning routine,” said jogger Prince William, who is in town for his Earthshot Summit.

So basically the media are doing their usual thing of trying to stir up division because they know that will generate clicks.

I don't believe William and Harry are competing I believe they are simply trying to live their lives in a climate where they are seen as expendable fodder for 24 hour "news". I hope one day someone is held accountable for the mental stress these media games cause.

It's great that Harry met the NATO bigwigs and a very suitable thing to happen at a military games.

It's great that William has met the head of the UN and a very suitable thing to happen as part his campaign to find worldwide environmental solutions.

When are we, and I include myself in this, going to stop falling for the artificial conflict the media are stirring up, stop giving them clicks and stop repeating the rubbish "a source", "a friend", (which only means a journalist who works for our paper after all) etc etc spread.

everetting · 20/09/2023 17:41

There is a Nobel prize for climate change, except it is called environmental sustainability.
How can you take seriously a site that gets such basic facts wrong?

@everetting

I suggest you read it again before embarrassing yourself further with talk of 'getting basic facts wrong' - the quote about the Nobel prize in the article was attributed to Bloomberg.

everetting · 20/09/2023 18:27

Don't be so insulting, there is zero need for that.
The quote is included and not challenged by the journalist even though totally wrong

What an idiotic post. Harry and Meghan want a private life leave them alone. The Wales represent our country, some fabulous causes and are doing a fantastic job.

The Queen spoke from the iconic UNGA podium, as did Harry, one of a rare number to do so when they are not head of state, or representing a head of state. Meghan spoke at a different podium, for UN Women.

William spoke at no podium. Yes, he met the UN Secretary General and shook his hand.

But it's not like some WOW thing, and it's silly to suggest it is. It's not that hard to meet the UN SG. I have had pictures taken with Kofi Annan when he was SG, and I am an absolute nobody.

This trip has not gone well for William because he has made the mistake of trying to "big" things up that do not need to be "bigged up", like hosting a side event at UNGA. Anyone with cash and a cause can do that.

He is bigger than that, and should stop tying to conquer America and just focus on the UK.

How has the trip gone badly? I’ve only seen positive stuff. I couldn’t even find anything about the mayor not seeing him when I googled it. 🤷‍♀️ At least he didn’t end up in a near catastrophic car chase😂

Boudicasbeard · 20/09/2023 19:03

@MrsMaxDeWinter

I’d be interested to know how the trip hasn’t gone well for William.

There are only six Nobel Prizes, awarded annually for Physics, Chemistry, Literature, Medicine, Economics and Peace. There is no “Environmental Sustainability” Prize. Maybe check your own facts?

Very carefully worded there! Just pointing out that while the Queen and Harry may have spoken from a podium in the same auditorium, they were not the same kind of engagements. The Queen had twice been invited to address the United Nations General Assembly.

Harry was invited to speak in the UN General Assembly chamber to mark Nelson Mandela Day. But he was not addressing the General Assembly - they were not in session that day - it was an informal gathering. He was nominated by the Nelson Mandela Foundation. Later that year of course, Archewell executive-produced the Mandela Foundation “Live to Lead” series for Netflix.

Also, you somehow missed that William gave an address at the UN COP26 in 2021. COP is the “Conference of the Parties”, the decision-making body for the UN’s Framework Convention on Climate Change. (There was a podium there too).

everetting · 20/09/2023 20:19

Yes just checked and you are right. It is the Nobel prize for peace that has been given for climate Change work.

Where was it on the mainstream press please? I googled “mayor cancels on William” and I got two results that actually talk about it. One was from an American site called “City and State”, and the other was a gossip site that is well known as anti Royal 🤷‍♀️
