NY mayor cancelled a meeting with WIlliam but hasn't said why. Does anyone know more?

It was a mock-up from a very old engagement for Heads Together when William, Harry and Kate competed in a short race against each other.

Don’t you just love the posters who say it’s not gone well. As if they are right there in the thick of it with inside information instead of sitting in an armchair with a cup of tea like the rest of us 🤣

And all the posters who said there would be no interest in the RF when Queen Elizabeth died .
Crowds greeting C and C and W .

@PhilMitchellsleatherbomber no treaties were signed. It was a state dinner and there were lots of other celebrities there. 160 people overall.
I did like camillas dress she wore to the dinner.
But I don't think we should pretend this really achieves anything.

Why do you think Heads of State visit and receive other Heads of State? It’s not always about signing treaties

Hmmm.. that article is four months old & rather selective in its slant. It says: "Only three in 10 Britons think the monarchy is “very important”, the lowest proportion on record, a poll shows as the king’s coronation approaches."

You could have chosen a much more recent poll, like this one, which concludes: "Most Britons think the king is doing a good job (59%), compared to only 17% who say he is doing a bad job. Again, these results are broadly in line with recent trends, with the number of people saying Charles is doing a good job having shot up to 63% upon Queen Elizabeth II’s death, and all subsequent polls giving figures in the 58-60% range."

One year into King Charles's reign, how do Britons feel about the monarchy? | YouGov

Most still support the institution, although younger people far less so

Tell that to the Foreign Office, who arranges these visits. I’m sure they are really interested in the views of a random poster on MN….

Serenster · 21/09/2023 15:15

Also, just to take Macron as a good example - two weeks ago he was vociferously booed by 80,000 largely French attendees at the opening match of the Rugby World Cup. Yesterday he drove down the Champs Elysees in an open-top car with King Charles to loud cheers from a large crowd. There are photos of him looking statesmanlike by the Arc de Tripmphe and st Versailles in the press all over the world. He will be delighted with this visit, and the aims of the Foreign Office will be largely met.

pilates · 21/09/2023 15:25

@Iwantcakeeveryday if you really want to bring up a TAAT then please check thoroughly as I believe I said good on Harry for doing something positive but you carry on with your aspersions.

@MrsMaxDeWinter

I’d be interested to know how the trip hasn’t gone well for William.

As an example of failure to promote his environmental message, the ABC evening news carried a fluff piece lasting only a few seconds about William jogging in Central Park and going completely unrecognised.

This was a similar report - from a different source, but I think you can sense the general drift.

Novella4 · 21/09/2023 15:47

Ok royalists -as you are very confident that the Windsors are loved - will you therefore join me and support a properly conducted survey ?

Novella4 · 21/09/2023 16:58

Re Willy

I don’t think even the deluded Windsors expect much serious attention from Americans .
This stunt was about providing tabloid fodder to try to spin the ‘statesman’ image that is the latest iteration of lazy Willy . Can someone tell them
hes not elected and has no business even attempting to call himself a statesman .

Willy just needed a photo to give to the tabloids
Just like last time , when he waylaid Biden in car park .

The thread title appears to be a hoax because this is reported in one very dubious article and nowhere else of any significance. Article also says mayor Adams strongly supported prince harry over the car chase. To most people Major Adams was calling the whole 'incident' a non event, not defending anyone. So its basically BS.

On a positive note, William was just fabulously welcomed by the 'seen it all' New Yorkers, and loved that he took the time to chat and do selfies. Very positive coverage by the news outlets and he represented the country so well. Polite, personable, good looking and friendly. Can't ask for more.

King charles and camilla also doing so well in France. Very surprising considering they beheaded the last French royal family. Looking just lovely. This is what royalty is all about. Keeping calm and carrying on.

colourwheelofortune · 21/09/2023 19:26

Don't you mean when they asked for a free ride home to america on Airforce one? Oh, no that was Megsie and Hazza

ArcaneWireless · 21/09/2023 19:45

Ach don’t ask don’t get. 🤷🏽‍♀️

They should have just asked Fergie for a word with Budgie the Little Helicopter. Jasper Jeer-jet owes him one.

FromEden · 21/09/2023 20:02

When did William waylay Biden in a carpark?

pilates · 21/09/2023 20:20

Just tried to look for the alleged article in the NY Daily News as couldn’t find it in any of the UK tabloids. How bizarre my phone blocked me from looking at the NY Daily News. 🤔

It obviously has a bullshit filter.

.

Quite.

From the Cambridge (arf) dictionary:

'Statesman':

an experienced politician, especially one who is respected for making good judgments.

Even if we leave the politician (an elected role) and the arguable good judgment aside the Duke of Dolittle only (and seemingly reluctantly) stepped onto the stage as a full time 'working' royal some six years ago with the Earthshot posturing materialising three years later.

Spinning Willy as a statesman is laughable.

colourwheelofortune · 21/09/2023 20:39

I've not seen it written anywhere that he is considered a 'statesman'. He is a Royal Prince though and is fronting the Earthshot prize.

Earthshot incidentally is a homage to the Moonshot initiative started by (I think) John Kennedy, and culminating in the moon landing. That was an ambitious project that was ultimately successful. William did explain this at his televised interview. There is a difference between homage and being unoriginal as has been suggested.

everetting · 21/09/2023 20:46

Wait william went jogging in Central Park and no one recognised him?
