Harry and Meghan make surprise phone calls to young leaders in the US

I actually really liked this video, it’s them doing what they have always done best. I want to see more things like this, hope it marks a change in tactics.

It also has a very “royal” feel: e.g. there have been recent reports about a split but they’re not arguing in the gutter they’re rising above it and proving them wrong, they’re using their spotlight to shine onto other people, etc.

Only criticism: why are they filming people on the phone?! Makes me think of The Apprentice 😂 use Zoom!!

I find it unbelievable that anyone would consider this unfair criticism.

I for one agree - I think it a perfectly valid criticism. I hope to see it applied equally to all across all strata and boards 👍🏽.

I think you’ll find it is? Kate got quite a lot of criticism for this outfit to visit a community centre in Birmingham following the 2011 riots - it was pretty much the first time she wore a bespoke McQueen outfit to a day event (it cost a fraction of Meghan’s cashmere Loro Piano outfit, too).

Absolutely, just @ me any time you want to talk about someone wearing $$$$$ worth of clothing to any impoverished school or center to interact with the kids and I will absolutely say I think it's tone deaf.

I know you wouldn't wear custom made clothing if you were doing something like that. I dressed very casually every time I went to the Boys and Girls club to help with activities or homework. I understand it's different but come on....

Samcro · 11/08/2023 20:56

I do wonder if they dress and I mean all royals is because it’s expected.
when a princess turns up (forget the incorrect title as children will think that is what they are) won’t they except to see someone dressed up.
if they dress down, couldn’t it be seen as “oh we are not worth it “

Yes, I think it would be very difficult to get it right.

I also have no idea why we even know the cost of their clothing. And no one mentions the men.

And who knows where they were going afterward. That could complicate things. I’m sure we’d hear that they made several wardrobe changes if they changed in between.

Ohpleeeease · 11/08/2023 20:59

i think they could all pull their horns in on the clothing budget. Sophie spends loads but it seems to go under the radar. I love Kate and I applaud her supporting British fashion but how many nearly identical versions of the same coat does she need? Does it always have to be Alexander McQueen, Jenny Packham et al? Maybe some up and coming designers could get a look in.

I’m in a bad mood, can you tell?

AliceOlive · 11/08/2023 21:02

Also, Kate looks like she’s going to be on a Sargent Pepper video remake and Meghan looks like she’s wearing a sack. Not fair, I know but I’m saying it.

Yes, don't like the outfit with all the brass buttons. I think it was pretty early on as she was still Wills' bride! Not sure what was going on with the red school outfit, if that was the 'sack' referral, but she has worn far more flattering outfits. ..#notinabadmoodthesunsbeenshininglol

AliceOlive · 11/08/2023 21:09

The red outfit was the NY trip where all of Meghan’s clothes seemed too big and wrong for the weather. Not her fault. It’s so difficult to take the right things to other parts of the country.

This is where I’m blown away by the inability or unwillingness to acknowledge a simple point. No, it’s not to normal wear clothing like that to read to children. It cost more than some people make in a year. It’s not the crime of the century, but it’s very tone deaf. Why defend it rather than ignoring the post or saying “meh, I see your point there.”?

I find it unbelievable that anyone would consider this unfair criticism.

I hope to find you saying a similar thing on the thread about the late Queen and her behaviour with regards to Andrew, quite a few apologists there unwilling to just say she got it absolutely wrong. I don't feel like jumping up and down about Meghan's tiny failings because I think the criticism against her is so disproportionate theres no need for me to join in. If criticism was fair and proportionate, I would.

She seems to have developed a 'uniform' ie safe clothes she knows work. It's a bit boring but understandable.

I don’t criticize mothers with respect to their children.

AliceOlive · 12/08/2023 13:00

I also added mentioned the possibility of ignoring posts. My question is why someone would vociferously defend even against valid criticism. Ignore it or admit it, fine. Calling all criticism unfair just makes it clear a poster refuses to ever be objective. Reminds me of the current US political climate.

AliceOlive · 12/08/2023 13:22

Also, not sure QE did get it wrong. If she had not paid VG there would be people here saying she should have done so rather than putting her through a trial. Just like some people think W&K should pay PP’s creditors. I am sure the Queen did what she thought was best. Now it seems Andrew regrets the settlement and would have preferred to fight the accusations. Given VG admitting that she had it wrong regarding Alan Dershowitz, I suspect he might have been able to show plausible deniability.

polkadotdalmation · 12/08/2023 13:48

VD also cannot produce the original or negative of the infamous photo, leaving open the possibility it was photoshopped, so that would also harm her case. I actually to photoshopping as part of my hobby business and I actually can't see it myself, at least not easily.

I don’t mind that, but does it have to be a whole new coat every time, from a very expensive designer? Actually I know Kate does her bit with lower cost items, it’s just this coat thing that grinds my gears.

AliceOlive · 12/08/2023 16:07

I thought she was notorious for recycling clothing?

jeffgoldblum · 12/08/2023 16:18

I thought that was Anne @AliceOlive , but believe it or not I don't follow the royals that closely 🤣

PrincessTigger · 12/08/2023 16:21

It’s always a bit overstated imo (it just means they wore something more than once in 50 years) although to be fair looking presentable is part of their job!

That's not what you both told me when I saw the royal shrine you created on Instagram.

Ohpleeeease · 12/08/2023 17:03

You’ve made me feel mean, Kate does recycle a lot. Not as spectacularly as Anne but still pretty good. But I maintain that one double breasted flared green coat is pretty much like another, and we wouldn’t mind if she saved a couple of grand and wore the same one twice.

Anne still wears clothes she bought from Susan Small in 1973.
