H&M asked if they could have a lift home on AF1 after HMQs funeral.
Environmentally friendly sure, but makes them look grabby and entitled again. Makes for a good story though.

There's enough to slate him on. I don't care what he looks like. He could be a young Paul Newman and gym fit, it would be the same.

See - I think that Dan is attractive (I know - don’t judge 🤣). So I had a cognitive dissonance moment when I saw that initially because I read it literally but when I read on I got the reference.

ArcaneWireless · 22/07/2023 08:28

verb
verb: patronise

  1. 1.
  2. treat in a way that is apparently kind or helpful but that betrays a feeling of superiority.
Serenster · 22/07/2023 08:28

What , because he said in March that he was in the final weeks of writing his next book? That was 4 months ago. Has he had to completely rewrite it since then?

Maireas · 22/07/2023 08:29

No judgement on taste from me, @skullbabe !
There's a Tory commentator on some news programme that I think is attractive.....then he opens his mouth!

@Iwantcakeeveryday

I am moving from baffled amusement to amused bafflement over this utterly surreal exchange. On a more positive note, it has provided me with my cue to step back from this thread before things are hammed up any further!

See you on the next thread!

Hmm yes best to leave it after you've received personal attacks again, it's so unnecessary. Have a good weekend :)

What personal attacks ? Have I missed something? The poster was asked not to be patronising that’s all and in my opinion it was a justified comment!

Its publication has been delayed to allow him to add in chapters about the coronation.

Given the short time Harry was in the U.K. and the fact he was seated behind Anne’s wonderful hat , I don’t think he will have any inside info .

Who has received personal attacks?

Poor Omid Scobie’s company accounts don’t exactly scream success do they

I'd never looked at them, but have now and whatever happened to the money he must surely have made from Spare?

It's not my world and I don't know when / how soon payments are made to authors, but I really would have thought there'd be more there ...

"a sideboard made of ham"?
I don't like the man, but it's just so lazy to attack someone on the basis of their appearance rather than their actions.
I really hate that. It puts me off writers.

It's a bit derivative too. Imo, Caitlin Moran's original quote:

David Cameron looks like C3P0 carved out of ham. His resemblance to a slightly camp gammon robot is extraordinary. You can practically see the breadcrumbs in his hair.

was better written and makes more sense than "a sideboard made of ham", imo. Of course, that description has been taken and run with by various journalists about various people.

I suppose the "ham sideboard" may have also been inspired by the quote from an ex-girlfriend of Nicholas Soames describing having sex with him as "being fallen on by a wardrobe with its key still in the lock".

Mind you, posters on MN are always finding other people's posts "hilarious" or "Lol" causing or 🤣🤣🤣🤣 (because one emoji just won't do), so there's definitely an audience here very ready to find humour in anything.

Some are gone as I reported them.

Maireas · 22/07/2023 09:49

@LaMarschallin - I suppose maybe it was an attempt at humour. Humour is of course subjective. I just think that this kind of comment on a person's physicality is just juvenile, surely better to attack their policies or their comments rather than their appearance? Just seems like a cheap low blow. It's very common though and it does diminish the argument, imo.

Crikey @LaMarschallin

Hardly a ringing endorsement. All I can hear now is the Karren Brady harsh but fair song in my head.

You won't get any disagreement from me on that.
I just thought "sideboard made of ham" was a bit lazy (as it seemed a bit cobbled together from two other famous phrases) whereas the other two quotes were more original.
And I'm afraid I did laugh at the Nicholas Soames joke.

We all know that humour based on appearance can be funny. I think if it's the main thing you pull a person up on, though, it's not great. For heaven's sake, Wootton gives enough ammunition without writers stopping to that level. But hey, it's a free press and Hyde can write what she wants.

LaMarschallin · 22/07/2023 10:09

Maireas

If that's to me, I completely take your point. I'm not disagreeing with you.
I'm not arguing.
I just said I thought the phrase used by Marina Hyde was derivative and not especially clever or funny.

skullbabe · 22/07/2023 06:16

To me it looks like filming overran and they misjudged their timings.

As was reported at the time, and confirmed with the printed schedule - the Wales' were not late, they arrived on schedule. Charles & Camilla arrived a few minutes early.

And frankly, wtf gives a shit? It was used as a stick to beat K&W with, a totally minor issue that caused no problems. It was a live event - all eventualities would have been planned for - horses drawing a carriage don't always stick to the speed limit and C&C left BP slightly early.

It's only criticised by some because W&K released a lovely short film of their preparations of the day.

Maireas · 22/07/2023 10:18

You're right, @MrsFinkelstein .
The horses rehearsed the route during the night. In the daytime, for the actual event, they were a bit brisker so C and C arrived slightly earlier than planned.
It didn't really cause a problem, and it wasn't the Wales' fault. Blame frisky horses!
