I do actually feel the same disgust at PP's remarks but I don't class the remarks Harry made as 'stupid things'.

Ok. So the racism Harry displayed which was awful.

Alongside the racism that was part of PPhillip's make up and which he kept up with all through his life, and which he seemed to be quite proud of.

Prince Phillip himself once noted his expertise in “dontopedalogy – the science of opening your mouth and putting your foot in it” – something, he said, he had “practiced for a good many years.”

Bit different from someone who has tried to make amends and learn surely...

Canthave2manycats · 20/07/2023 14:35

Prince Philip came from a hugely different generation. He would be over 100 now if he was still alive. Harry isn't even 40 yet.

derxa · 20/07/2023 14:36

Bit different from someone who has tried to make amends and learn surely... He hasn't tried to make amends. He has painted himself as this wonderful creature who has had a Damascene conversion and has accused a member of his family of having unconscious bias.

I don't think anyone could have changed PP unfortunately.

Canthave2manycats · 20/07/2023 14:37

Plus I don't believe it was Philip's intention to be racist - he engaged his mouth before his brain and it wasn't directed at a particular race or colour! In any case, it's years now since he came out with the 'gaffes' and he wouldn't get away with it now.

It is a bit disingenuous to say we have only just found out about Philips annuity. Camilla will be paid out of the Royal Sovereign grant as other royal members. Previously it probably came from Duchy of Cornwall funds. All this is published in accounts annually. Just media stirring as usual. Anyone who wanted to find out the monarchs spouse annuity could have found it out.

None of them are paid out of the Sovereign Grant. They don't draw wages. The SG just covers travel costs. Not wages, clothes, etc. That comes out of their own money.

Gracewithoutend · 20/07/2023 14:43

I liked Prince Philip.

🤣😂🤣

I've heard it all now! No it wasn't directed at a particular race or colour, it was to everyone. He was still doing it in the 2000's but upped his game and added in a bit of disabled shaming at that point. Not his intention though.... Hmm

FlouncetteLaFroth · 20/07/2023 14:49

It is interesting isnt it that Phillip also apologised for racist comments he made but yet he isn’t afforded the same courtesy some insist is afforded to Harry in respect of moving on and putting it in the past because, you know, he said he is learning from it and growing.

Unfortunately Philip is not in a position to ask Oprah or any other presenter to air his intention to learn and grow on the banquette these days.

It wasn’t just two things either from Harry either.

Both said terribly racist things. Both apologised.

It is either enough for both of them to be forgiven or both should be damned as racist for ever more.

FlouncetteLaFroth · 20/07/2023 14:51

Sorry - superfluous either.

PP made countless racist comments.

He was forced to apologise for one about Indians in 1999. That is the only public apology he ever made.

What about the rest of his comments? There were plenty of them after all.

So saying PPhillip apologised for all his racist comments is blatantly untrue. One apology for one comment when he was forced to.

Cornishclio · 20/07/2023 08:30

Why is this being rehashed for goodness sake. Philip is dead now so completely irrelevant.

The sovereigns spouse does a huge amount of public service and are massive contributors to tourism. Charles and Camilla were in St Ives the other day and you couldn't move for people. They can't do a normal job so they should receive some financial benefit.

I get far more cross about having to pay huge inflated salaries to heads of councils, NHS trusts, energy companies,MPs and media people through my TV licence. They contribute nothing as far as I can see. I get no choice over paying for them either.

If we accept this then the wives/husbands of our PMs should be paid - they really do do a lot for the country.

With no training and no money they have to a huge amount for the country.

IamSTARVING · 20/07/2023 14:59

Plus the wives of diplomats and so on...

Wenfy · 20/07/2023 15:07

I suspect he was paid a salary to not divorce the Queen. It’s quite well known they lived seperate lives for years.

I agree with this - probably because he was racisit. And elitist. And classist.

And paid a LOT of money, on the quiet for an awfully long time.

Er, no. I'd expect spouses of PMs to earn their own money, like Dennis Thatcher did, Cherie Blair, Jane Brown, Samantha Cameron, Philip May, etc. What did any of them do for the country?

So saying PPhillip apologised for all his racist comments is blatantly untrue. One apology for one comment when he was forced to.

I never said all. Isn’t it interesting some see only what they want to see?

And Harry didn’t make just the two racist comments.

And PP wasn’t the only one supposedly ‘forced’ to apologise if we are choosing to believe that narrative.

I would like to believe that the apologies were given freely and genuinely by both parties rather than blindly believe the press accounts of being forced.

However if they really were both forced rather than truly realising the damage of using racist terminology, then they both deserve scorn.

£360k to Phillip!

Me saying he was racist to everyone is really not agreeing with you!

I don't expect you to give a flying whatever, to what I say, ditto me!

I don't want to repeat some of his comments but they weren't all just jokey silly old uncle banter. Some were rude, hurtful and really unpleasant.

If that's silly of me to think like that, I am happy being so.

Would you excuse a member of your family coming out with the stuff he did?
I wouldn't.

Roussette · 20/07/2023 15:14

p.s. thank you for calling me unintelligent. Nothing like a few personal insults added to a post!

I find the laser like focus of your posts really interesting.

That PH...

All other Royals are - just old/hard working/dutiful/unfortunate people born into hard circumstance/ etc

That PH though...

Only him.

Shine that light Flounce

FlouncetteLaFroth · 20/07/2023 15:24

I am shining my light on both PP and PH using racist terminology and both should be equally held to account for it. And both apologies being accepted rather than just one.

What I find interesting is folk reading all kinds of everything into
a post which says nothing of the sort.

Perhaps you want to shine a light on what I’m actually typing instead of making up your own version of it?

Roussette · 20/07/2023 15:33

And both apologies being accepted rather than just one.

One forced apology for one 'gafffe' from PPhillip. He carried on after this apology in 1999 with his racist comments.

Think about it for a momnet.

Their lives are in public scrutinity once the partner wins.

They become what people claim DoE was - a support to the leader and an important aide at all National and International social functions.

They represent not only the leader they are with but the country.

We exoect them to behave accordingly - not go looking for contracts for thei company, not sleep around, not get drunk if they feel like it etc. It is work. high profile, quite hard work.

Usually done by women.

As usual, not paid.

It's a silly comparison. The spouses of the PM are quite free to follow their own career. The Duke of Edinburgh was not. He was a fiercely independent naval man. I'm sure he wouldn't have wanted to have to go running to HM every time he needed a fiver!
