Only just seen this... that's interesting. So once it goes up to a certain amount it can't go back down?

Not only does it not go down the set amount is underwritten regardless of Crown Estate profits.

The CE profits took a massive hit in lockdown like so many other businesses. Unlike those businesses however the royals collected their dosh regardless leaving the taxpayer to bridge the gap.

Yes, no cutting back for them. Horrors! They've had to turn down the temperature of the swimming pools after all!
The Queen did apply for the covid poverty grant to heat the Palaces. It had to be explained to her it was for hospitals, schools and housing associations to help low income families.

They. Are. Greedy.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 21/07/2023 18:17

Not that it really matters, but I don't think it was a Covid-related grant, Roussette? - the "heating the palaces" disgrace happened (or was at least discovered) back in 2010

Still says a lot about the mentality at play though ...

Queen asked for poverty grant to heat palaces

Ministers refused royal request, saying handouts were aimed at schools, hospitals and housing associations to help low-income families

I somehow can't envisage HMTQ sitting at her opulent desk filling in an application form...

I also can't comprehend why some of you are so exercised about the cost of a system that has existed for generations, that doesn't affect you personally in any way? I.Just.Don't.Care.

If the entire RF was driven into exile tomorrow and all their properties and wealth seized, it would not make one iota of difference to my life - or yours! Not worth getting your knickers in a twist about it.

Why do you think it doesn't affect us?

It does enormously!

The Crown is the supreme authority in UK. Not the people. The Monarchy has vast powers that can't be challenged in court.

I'll get my knickers in a twist about it. Lots.

Canthave2manycats · 21/07/2023 21:33

You do you. I fail to see any direct impact upon your life.

You will only end up with twisted knickers and high bp.

I would save high blood pressure for something that affected my life, maybe my family.

That doesn't stop me questioning inequality and unfairness.

Try it!

I question inequality and unfairness in things that matter to me and that I can actually do something about. It's called pragmatism.

Try it!

This is clearly untrue.

You care a great deal about persuading others Not.To.Care.

Sorry I should've explained. He uses it for one week, but there will be a whole retinue of staff there to enable his one week. I know the public gets access but I wonder how much and how often.

They are a possession of the 'Royal Collection Trust' of who the Chairman is ... yes.. Charles.

"The palace and grounds are an ancient possession of the Crown but whilst 26 Crown properties – including Linlithgow Palace, Stirling Castle, Edinburgh Castle and Holyrood Park – were transferred to Scottish Ministers in 1999, no such transfer took place for the palace, even though the palace is public property that has been managed by Historic Scotland and its predecessors since 1851. But a stealthy power grab seems to have been underway over the past 30 years with the Royal Collection Trust – a charity formed in 1987, whose chairman is the Prince of Wales – now employing the palace staff."

I've been round Holyroodhouse. It's open all your round except christmas day and a week in July. Its very popular. And it wasn't a cheap entry so it earns a good income. The Scottish govt use it for entertaining and they put up visitors there. In fact when we were there at the start of December, they were decorating outside and putting up a huge Christmas tree in the hall. And the dinner table still had menus on from the night before when Sturgeon had been entertaining.

It's very historic. It has a semi ruined church next to it where Charles II was crowned. And in the house you can see where Rizzio was murdered. It's really lovely. If you get the chance to go, do. It's just down the Golden Mile from the Castle.

He was an outstanding naval man and if he hadn't married the queen would likely have been first sea lord or chief of the defence staff. "Wandering around the world" was of immense frustration to him. He would have been far happier being able to do what he loved and excelled at. They hadn't anticipated the Queen's father dying so young, assumed he'd be able to work for many years.

Tbh I am quite surprised that the queen's spouse was getting less than various chat show hosts.

The fact that he had a good war does not indicate he’d have ended up in a senior post war role, never mind First Sea Lord. He wasn’t known for diplomacy or strategic thinking and had little education.

I have nothing against the man, but as a good looking but penniless and careerless minor Euro-royal, marrying a rich woman was always going to be his best bet.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 23/07/2023 14:21

No doubt, but the high position of his deeply questionable uncle (Mountbatten) would have helped, to say nothing of the marriage he was so keen to push

Exactly!

An apathetic populace is much more valuable to the ‘royals’ than an enthusiastic one.
Enthusiasms wane
Apathy allows them to run on for lifetimes , taking billions

IamSTARVING · 23/07/2023 23:29

Has anyone totted up the bill for the last 10 years/

The weddings, funerals, jubliees, coronations, grants, secret payents to DoE etc?

It amount must be so high.

They are the most expensive tourisim campaign in the WORLD.

askmeonemoretime · 24/07/2023 13:38

The Queen applying for the covid poverty heating grant was particularly greedy.

BarbieBunches · 24/07/2023 14:25

@Novella4 absolutely - apathy for the royals is the gift that keeps on giving 🤬
