Are they considered close friends? And Gayle, Oprah's bestie, is she still on side H&M...she appears to have gone quiet.
Or has the now known lies from their Oprah interview changed their friendship I wonder?
It all seemed so pally but did it stand the test of time?

I'm explaining why I think the narrative is out there that H&M accepted the award for tackling 'racism in the royal family'. Where did that idea come from? Who first said it, in what context, and why was it reported on?

Kerry Kennedy's words seem to offer a solution to that - and it may well be that she put H&M on the spot, at a live awards ceremony, and there was nothing they could do about it except keep smiling and stick to their script.

William and Kate had the Beckhams at their wedding.

William and Kate had the Beckhams at their wedding.

William (and for that matter, Harry too) have known David Beckham for many years. William has been president of the FA for getting on for 2 decades. I assume the Beckham's were invited to the wedding because they're friends.

GlorianaCervixia · 03/07/2023 13:58

Kerry Kennedy discussed the award in an interview. She didn’t put anyone on the spot.

Since she is president of the organisation that gave the award, she knows exactly why it was given so if she says it was because of their opposition to structural racism in the royal family and raising issues around mental health, then that’s the reason why. A citation isn’t going to reveal the thinking behind why an award was given. They relied on the narrative Harry and Meghan provided in the Oprah interview.

Howsimplywonderful · 03/07/2023 14:06

Kerry Kennedy and Liz Garbus (director of their Netflix documentary) are partners

Kerry gave interviews in advance of the award explicitly mentioning them tackling racism in the RF.

Liz Garbus also edited one of the Queen’s famous speeches for the documentary. I wonder how Kerry Kennedy would have felt if her fathers speeches were amended in a similar way.

Howsimplywonderful · 03/07/2023 14:08

My apologies Kerry’s sister Rory and Liz Garbus are partners

Oh come on - throughout the years before Will and Kates wedding there had been loads of photos of Will /Kate /them both together out with various other people, never seen socialising with the Beckhams- David Beckham was a work acquaintance at best, but as said up thread, the Royals do invite people to things not just because they have provided a service to the royals /the charities or projects they are involved in. It’s seen as “transactional” when Harry and Meghan do it, but perfectly acceptable when Will and Kate do.

The Royals have courted celebrities in recent years to make themselves appear relevant and celebrities have courted association with the Royals to make themselves seem higher class/establishment.

Oblahbla · 03/07/2023 17:26

Oh come on - are you suggesting that there are photos out there of everyone William and Kate have ever had dinner with? TBH, even if they're only 'friends' via their football links, they've known each other for many years - a similar relationship to that of many blokes with their sports mates. Anyway, it wasn't a case of inviting Beckham to their wedding despite never meeting him before.

Lol.

Would she be allowed to bring the Parker Bowles to the palace?

Well, if she doesn't, perhaps Princess Anne will......

I guess, by your own standards this makes you a liar then, even if you did quickly corrected it, just as Meghan is a liar for clarifying something she said almost immediately🙃

MrsMaxDeWinter · 03/07/2023 19:15

See, unlike you did with Meghan, I will extend to you the grace of accepting that you were wrong but clarified things. I promise that I won't remind you, in 2027, of that time in July 2023 when you lied about who Liz Garbus's partner was.

We are all good!

Howsimplywonderful · 03/07/2023 19:52

If they had made a statement in the closing credits to say they had made a mistake - that would be the same as my error

But having to be prodded into making a correction quite different

But don’t worry, it was a decent attempt

LimeCheesecake · 03/07/2023 20:08

@Oblahbla - nope, but the Beckhams are very famous - that would be a big selling story/photo. If they were real friends, not just someone William has been at work events with - then there would be some evidence they’d socialised.

Don’t get me wrong, I don’t think it’s wrong Will and Kate invited people they’d worked with, didn’t know very outside of that yet are famous /glamorous to add a bit more interest to their wedding guest list, they had a whole cathedral to fill after all. Just don’t get the double standard when Harry and Meghan invite their neighbour and a couple they knew a bit but not best mates with.

or put another way, Harry and Meghan just copied his older brothers behaviour, if it’s wrong they both are.

LimeCheesecake, the pertinent bit - William had met David Beckham many times before they were invited to William and Kate's wedding. Even if they're not best buddies, they've worked together, spent time together. Perfectly reasonable to invite them to the wedding, even without the 'transactional' aspect.

ajandjjmum · 03/07/2023 20:42

The Beckhams were also at Harry and Meghan's wedding.

If you look back a bit - say to 2015 and earlier, and before, you'll find pix of the (then) Cambridges and Beckhams (David and son/s mainly) in the box at sporting events, plus loads of gossip column pieces about the Beckhams being close to a number of royals.

This may have changed over time, but at around the time of the wedding and for a while after, there was a social relationship

ajandjjmum · 04/07/2023 04:55

Didn't it begin when William and David working closely with the FA in their bid to bring the World Cup to the UK a number of years ago?

I thought that too, @ajandjjmum although I don’t follow foopball so I’m not a reliable witness.

Sounds as thought they've known each other a while.

Gracewithoutend · 04/07/2023 19:30

Harry and Meghan declined on palace advice, as they confirmed, and Oprah confirmed in the interview. But they established a warm relationship, with Oprah becoming close to Doria. Harry and Meghan then left and nothing prevented them from talking to a woman who, by this time was their neighbour, and their friend.

Harry was involved with Oprah and the mental health series they did before they left the RF. That's how they built a relationship.

Oprah's a business woman and she knew that was a great interview to have. It's a small hop from doing a TV programme together to doing the interview and Meghan was quite clearly eager to do an interview with her before the wedding.

I don't see how Oprah could be blamed for anything. She knew there were things amiss with in Harry's relationship with his family because of what he was saying on the Apple programme. But it's not her responsibility to challenge them. She was quite clear that it was their truth as opposed to the truth. No interviewer is going to insert themselves into that mess to slug it out on either side. She just gave them a platform to speak.

Meghan was already in negotiations with OW during their 4 months break in Canada where they had gone to think about what wanted for their future. So they had already made up their minds despite this official decision to step back not having been taken.

Meghan was already in negotiations with OW during their 4 months break in Canada where they had gone to think about what wanted for their future. So they had already made up their minds despite this official decision to step back not having been taken.

Their Sussex Royal website was registered in April 2019, a month before Archie was born, so the intention to monetise their titles was way before the trip to Canada.
