Are they considered close friends? And Gayle, Oprah's bestie, is she still on side H&M...she appears to have gone quiet.
Or has the now known lies from their Oprah interview changed their friendship I wonder?
It all seemed so pally but did it stand the test of time?

That's strange @AliceOlive , thought it was a big thing all over the US? , it's my son's birthday. So he was asking where the fireworks were and I had to explain that it wasn't for him it was an American holiday! 😊

jeffgoldblum · 08/07/2023 16:34

Thanks @Howsimplywonderful , I haven't actually mentioned Oprah at all ! , however I would love to join a club with yourself and others! , sounds fun 🤩

Maybe I’m losing it. I remember going to St. Patrick’s day, Memorial Day, Halloween, Thanksgiving and Christmas parades. Homecoming was a thing, too. July 4th was always a bbq then fireworks at night.

Maybe because it was so hot where I lived, they didn’t happen on July 4th or else we just skipped them.

jeffgoldblum · 08/07/2023 16:41

Maybe @AliceOlive , was it hot there? The weather here has been but it was cooler on the 4th, but I know the US is huge in comparison so you all get different weather?
Sorry nosy find hearing about other countries fascinating!

I grew up in the state that had four distinct seasons, with spring lasting about 5 days. 😂. Summer was super hot and humid.

Currently live in a cooler climate which is a bit more livable. Just visited the Mountains in Massachusetts and was surprised by how hot/humid it was the past few days. Cooler at night though and under the pines.

Weather seems all over the map now, hard to know what to expect anywhere.

jeffgoldblum · 08/07/2023 17:18

Ohh very interesting @AliceOlive , yes weather all over the place here too! , we have quite odd variation here too ( on a smaller scale!) for example my house and garden absolutely scorching but my friend across town ( trying not to be outing) , will be cooler and have showers! , seems so odd 🤣

AliceOlive · 08/07/2023 17:21

It’s like that here in places, too. I went to a friend’s house the other day and it felt ten degrees cooler. They have huge pine trees in the yard and we don’t.

jeffgoldblum · 08/07/2023 17:53

Can I say ( hopefully not outingly ) , I really enjoyed your post about crazy neighbour , so funny and loved the descriptions .

Haha!! Thank you! They have, fortunately, been gone most of the time lately and I’ve not seen or heard much about them.

We are planning a block party soon so will need to appoint someone else to invite them so they aren’t excluded, but I don’t have to send the email myself.

jeffgoldblum · 08/07/2023 18:46

Sounds good!@AliceOlive , I'm sort of rural ish here , and some of us brits aren't as blessed with our neighbours, so I love hearing about block parties and such! , am I right in thinking the block is the surrounding houses? , I'm sure it was explained somewhere that American houses were sometimes built like a sort of grid ? , so block would be one of those?

AliceOlive · 08/07/2023 18:58

Yes, a block is just the stretch of a street between two cross streets. We call it a “block party” but we will invite anyone and everyone in the neighborhood. The police will drop barriers for us a to close off the street pretty much any time we ask. Not that this is normal everywhere, usually they’re is paperwork or permits but we live in a small, sweet little municipality.

They let us do this recently during a local bike ride to benefit a cause. It was going past my house, so we closed off the cross street, drank coffee and ate breakfast things and waved at the cyclists. Just a small group of neighbors because it was a last minute idea, but it was super fun.

jeffgoldblum · 08/07/2023 20:15

Sounds really fun @AliceOlive 👍

Yawnfest ???
As a Scot who was on the Royal Mile watching the procession etc and who knows 2 people who attended the actual service , I take great exception to you referring to an important Scottish event as a yawnfest .
How dare you .

I thought that was an outrageous comment too. It was a beautifully Scottish service, full of lovely, thoughtful touches, and I enjoyed it thoroughly.

With the very greatest of respect to you both, I am not compelled to enjoy something just because you did, or because it is Scottish or English for that matter. The world has moved on from the time when something being Scottish or English made it an inherently superior thing that we "inferior" people of the "darker races" were obliged to find spellbinding and lap up.

I found it as dull as the Coronation borefest in May, not least because the two people at the centre of it are, in my opinion, bland, dull and completely free of charisma.

You enjoyed it, good for you. I found it an interminable yawnfest.

It's called having different tastes.

Thank you.

Oblahbla · 08/07/2023 20:52

'I found it an interminable yawnfest.'

Why did you watch it?

Samcro · 08/07/2023 20:54

I thought the whole point of these threads were that people were allowed to think differently

Why did you watch it?

To see if it would be as dull as the Coronation.

Why are you so offended that I did not enjoy it??

GrouchyKiwi · 08/07/2023 21:03

It was the way you wrote it, MrsDW. Insultingly dismissive.

Milcar · 08/07/2023 21:12

Yes, very dismissive of different opinions. Not unknown.

Couldn't care less - just wondered why anyone would watch something they found boring.

You were rude and sneering .
No one forced you to watch it or the May event .

Howsimplywonderful · 08/07/2023 21:20

I’d feel much the same about Suits, terribly boring, single dimensional rubbish, I’d be embarrassed to admit choosing a career on the basis of watching it, but we are all different

Indeed however - as we are constantly being reminded - it is possible to disagree without being rude.

You couldn't be more wrong. I have no huge vested interest, just wondered if the O, H and M friendship existed.
True, I don't have much positive to say about any of them but they are certainly not my life's work.
