It's not a "narrative"

It's a single example of the Palace waiting for the parents to express their wishes on which out of the available titles they wanted to be used for their DC. That strikes me as both fair and reasonable, and I think it is right that it was the parents who made and announced the choice

WinnieTheW0rm · 29/06/2023 12:29

Though I think you might be on to something with "ignored" (but not "snubbed")

H&M have made it very clear that they wished to move on to a new life, and in his accession speech Charles wished them well in that. The Palace is now not concerned with them day-to-day, but as family they are of course invited to the big family occasions (and for all we know might be invited for private visits, or not by individuals' inclinations)

The Palace seems to be "ignoring" them in the sense that they are simply not taken in to consideration any more, and don't get the benefit of the Palace systems (except perhaps admin when they are over) and the RF gets on with the business of the Monarch and the working royals.

It does leave me wondering if Harry didn't fully grasp how much the Palace did for him in terms of reputation management, and is feeling its loss more than he expected. But he now has every opportunity to build something worthwhile in the circumstances that he chose. That should be a good place to be in

Gracewithoutend · 29/06/2023 14:58

I wonder why the titles are so important to them? When Harry tells everyone to just call him Harry, I wonder why he wants to hang onto prince. And why is keeping HRH such a big deal? He must think there's a big benefit to it but at the same time he feels trapped with it. Diana was devastated at losing her HRH too. And according to her she just thought herself one of the people. I wonder what doors it opens or why it makes them feel better. And I wonder why Meghan uses her title in her home country where it's supposedly got no value? Can she see the value, does it make her feel more important to introduce herself with a title?

Full disclosure, I'd love to have a title. And I'd use it to get every advantage I could whilst telling everyone to call me Grace to make it sound like my title was unimportant to me. But I wonder what advantages they believe the titles confer on them and why they don't feel trapped by them.

Maireas · 29/06/2023 17:26

Why, @Gracewithoutend ? Status, kudos, social opportunities, job opportunities, celebrity, proximity to the throne, merching..why else. Future proofing for the children, too.
.

Milcar · 29/06/2023 17:29

whilst telling everyone to call me Grace to make it sound like my title was unimportant to me.

Dukes/Duchesses used to be addressed as 'Your Grace', so 'just call me Your Grace' could work 😂

Milcar · 29/06/2023 17:36

The Palace seems to be "ignoring" them in the sense that they are simply not taken in to consideration any more,

The impression I got over the titles was along those lines - the grey rock technique. No-one is going to run after them asking what they want any more, but no-one is trying to take away the titles either.

It simply doesn't matter much which titles they use for the children, and there is no incentive left to try to keep them happy and on board by being proactive about asking.

jeffgoldblum · 29/06/2023 17:42

Indeed @Milcar , as I was told as a child, if you have nothing nice to say , don't say anything at all ! ( although a good bitch is always fun! 🤣)

😂 I'm going to give that a go... and nudge them into a curtsey.

jeffgoldblum · 29/06/2023 17:45

Your Grace 🙇‍♀️

Milcar · 29/06/2023 17:54

nudge them into a curtsey while saying 'no, no, there's no need really to curtsey' 😂

Isn't there a Scottish Duke who was an Australian remote cousin and inherited from his seventh cousin twice removed or something, when that branch of the family died out?

You never know when you'll get a call from the lawyers to tell you that you've landed a title and castle!

Maireas · 29/06/2023 17:59

It can happen 🤞
You can always buy yourself one of those Lord of the Manor things, like Puppah's husband. Hasn't he bought some Scottish title?

Howsimplywonderful · 29/06/2023 18:07

I know someone’s family who was selling one of their Irish titles and Boy George wanted to buy it. They didn’t to sell it in the end.

Howsimplywonderful · 29/06/2023 18:08

@Maireas

Every time I read ‘puppah’ I do smile. Thanks for that

Maireas · 29/06/2023 18:10

Whaaaat?! I want an Irish title. My family are from Roscommon. Have your friends any to sell? That would be fantastic at work. Imagine the reaction of students and staff. Brilliant.

Maireas · 29/06/2023 18:12

Lady Maireas of That Ilk.
That would look good on a credit card.

Milcar · 29/06/2023 18:19

Yes. You could accidently sign something with your title, and then make a big show of 'oh my goodness, I wanted to keep that a secret'. Make sure everyone sees you cross it out in embarassment (but don't cross it out so heavily they can't see what you originally put)...!

Maireas · 29/06/2023 18:21

True. That's the trouble with automatic tills and contactless, no shop assistants to impress.

Oh, yes, I'd forgotten that bit. No, no, stand up. I'm just like you... underneath.

Haha. My friends would annihilate me but I don't care. What are the expressions people say on here? I'd be saying, curtsey peasant, doff thy cap and pull what little forlock thou hast left, serf. Then getst thou to thy hovel and fetch me all thy goods. For I own thou and all thou hast is mine. Bwahaha.
Oh my goodness, they're right, power corrupts! 😉

Maireas · 29/06/2023 19:35

Don't worry about your friends, @Gracewithoutend . Get new ones.

Thats right. I'll buy some. And anyway it seems to me that people with titles always get people flocking to them. Let's hope they're all sycophants telling me how wonderful I am. 🤩

I am your dear, dear friend, Grace. Think of the happy times we can have together, shining a light on our good causes while dining at La Gavroche wearing bespoke Dior.

Gracewithoutend · 29/06/2023 20:00

Maireas · 29/06/2023 18:12

Lady Maireas of That Ilk.
That would look good on a credit card.

I think you can call yourself that if you want. As long as its not for fraudulent purposes.

I have a few membership cards with different titles. I'm a Dr and a Prof. I haven't ventured in ennoblement areas... Yet. Hmmm. Wonder where my RSPB membership form is?

Maireas · 29/06/2023 20:01

Dr and a Prof? I like your style.
I may go for Reverend.

Gracewithoutend · 29/06/2023 20:03

Lady Maireas and Her Grace will be dining out tonight. We dont want to shame the other diners so we'll be taking the Fiat and leaving the Bentley at home. 😄
