What is it about H&M and/or the royals, that gets people so angry and worked up?

People being pretty hostile to each other on the royal threads these days?

There seem to be quite fierce emotions in defence of H&M and also attacking them.

What's it all about do you think? Why all the hostility on these boards on either side?

(Obviously loads of people not being hostile. I fully acknowledge that! Just wondering why some posters have so much emotion for or against, and why the hostility to those with differing opinions. What is being ignited or triggered in people?)

‘Which is why you'll see them refer to 'black adjacent' people having 'adopted children'. It's a dig at me.’

Oh my goodness - I’d noticed they kept peppering their word salad with that, hadn’t known that was why! Sorry to hear that people can be so unpleasant and you’ve experienced that. Don’t take any notice of them, says everything about what kind of person they really are.

Funnily enough I’ve had my life experiences and opinions discounted as well, despite being a poc - and I’ve seen it done a lot to other posters too. All in the name of calling out racism - by trashing poc online to defend a wealthy hypocritical celebrity - the mind boggles 😂 one of the other reasons I don’t like the power couple is because they got away with bullying people who didn’t have a platform to fight back. I was bullied out of a job, because of racism - overt and covert. It was a horrible experience and it’s sickening how people in power can get away with it. And having had racism impact my life, on a frequent basis, again it’s mind boggling when I get accused of racism on here 😂 just cos I don’t agree with the stans

mixedrecycling · 23/05/2023 20:18

I don't take any notice - except now to laugh at them! As I said, I did try to engage at first, just as you did.

DD is thriving, and has a secure sense of her identity, so I don't give a flying XXXX what random strangers on the internet try to project onto us! It says more about them than about me (or DD).

Just as when they tell POC on these threads that they are racist it says more about them than the POC disagreeing with them. I think it worked for a while, because it is horrible - whatever the colour of your skin - to be accused of racism. But they have done it so often, to so many people, the effect is wearing off.

MrsMaxdeWinter - you are quite wrong. Meghan did indeed look at all the pretty castles, pageantry, outfits etc etc and of course a prince and thought yes please! Do you honestly think she’d have gone for Harry Windsor if he’d been an actor of a similar level as she was?

The problem was, yes, the constant media attention, but it was also very much that royal life can be crap. They weren’t living in a castle (nb Meghan’s comment to Oprah about Frogmore Cottage and the fact that Harry asked for Windsor Castle which was laughed out of Windsor Great Park) and there is drudge (Meghan saying she couldn’t believe she wasn’t paid during Australia tour) and outfits and gifts are carefully monitored - no freebies.

Meghan and Harry left to monetise and control their position. I’m not sure Harry thought he would end up in LA but Meghan for sure wasn’t going to be spending her life hiking in British Columbia.

I agree

I ask whether OP has a problem with Carole Middleton who is seen in public more than Doria has ever been.

I think that’s a silly argument to make, given Kate Middleton has been in the public eye since she was outed as William’s girlfriend 20 years ago. Of course that got her family got press attention too, and they lived in the UK and attended public events as well as family occasions that were photographed. Meghan and Harry’s relationship hands only been public for 6 years, and Doria lives in Los Angeles. Of course there are more pictures of Carole Middleton. What’s your point?

The OP did say she didn't like Carole and talked quite a bit about this. She also said she likes Doria. She said this many times but it wasn't enough for some people.

OP admitted to possibly feeling the way she felt about Meghan and her mum due to losing her own mum. But I see all that's been left out of what happened. I was surprised the thread got deleted.

@mixedrecycling Glad to hear she’s thriving, that’s wonderful to hear 💐 And it’s great that you laugh off all their silly attention seeking nonsense! I do enjoy them for the comedy value too, I stopped trying to have a real and fair discussion with them months ago.

And yes, I think you’re right, people trod a little more carefully around them previously, as you never know what someone is going is through, and most people aren’t mean and don’t want anyone to feel bad. A lot of benefit of the doubt. And most people will take a beat when an accusation is made to at least reflect on their actions. But you’re spot on, they’ve done it for so long and to so many posters now, it’s wearing thin and I don’t believe it is genuine at all on their part. I don’t even think they really like Megan. The way she is discussed is a bit inappropriate and creepy, she’s reduced constantly to how attractive she is, as though a woman’s worth is tied to her appearance. And that is then used to insinuate that anyone being critical is therefore ugly and jealous of her - again the mind boggles 😂

Yes, it goes:

  • racist
  • jealous
  • gullible (tabloid/DM reader)
  • just plain stupid

And claiming to speak for all POC, except those who have internalised racism to the extent they are also racist.

sheworemellowyellow · 23/05/2023 14:09

All of you doing the pro-Meghan/anti-racist work: why are you choosing Meghan Markle to make your points? She's so riven with demonstrable flaws that muddy your water (eg choosing to marry Prince Harry of the British royal family, and all her questionably self-serving acts since bursting onto the scene in the UK and being so vocal about selfless service), why not do yourselves a favour and find someone you can actually champion?

I agree. She's not the one. Although I don't feel as passionately negative as some here do about her, I don't feel passionately positive either. I'm in the middle and see her good and bad.

MayQueeen · 23/05/2023 20:38

hahahahahhahaha omg far more succinct than me!

that is the formula! Forgot about the Dm accusation, yet they’re usually the ones highlighting every new article on there (urm meaning they’re the one’s obsessed with reading it) 😂

rattymol · 23/05/2023 20:48

I think it so divisive become for some people the royals can do no wrong.
Anyone who defends anything harry and Meghan does gets called fans and stabs even if they are not fans in any sense of the word.

mixedrecycling · 23/05/2023 20:52

Or because for some people H&M can do no wrong?

tigger2022 · 23/05/2023 20:54

If someone on the forum is posting personal attacks just report them and ignore, you don’t have to attend every argument you’re invited to. Trolls hate being ignored, they go places where they get attention.

mixedrecycling · 23/05/2023 20:59

I do ignore.

They are good at making snide attacks that don't qualify as 'personal attacks'. It doesn't mean the sudden references to 'adopted children' after my comments about learning from my adopted (black) DD aren't personal. Just that it is very easy to make indirect attacks.

Since they've done that I have stopped taking their 'warrior against racism' presentation seriously, though! Plus, of course, their attacks on POC for being racist.

Howsimplywonderful · 23/05/2023 21:02

When I was young my friend had annoying American cousins who used to come over every couple of summers

They used to treat us like idiots, they always knew best and how we used to laugh at them and at how backward they thought we were (, Meghan just gives me an anky

polkadotdalmation · 23/05/2023 21:25

I'm so pleased so many other people here have finally cottoned on to the tactics of the weird worshipping fraternity that tries to overwhelm every post. I just laugh at them now, as they are such a transparent joke.

The tactics I've seen most commonly is pile onto one poster in an attempt to upset them into posting an insult knowing MNHQ will delete without looking at the context.

Twist and distort what you say until it makes you look like a monster. This happened to me the other day and totally backfired on someone. All my posts stood and theirs was deleted. Not seen them since.

Lie about what you actually said because that keeps within the guidelines and leaves you with the option, ignore and let it stand or get into a long winded denial, which they will come back at you until you lose the will to live.

Call you a 'hater'. Favourite word here despite the fact no one can hate someone they don't know. Disliking or even hating someone's behaviour is not the same thing, but this is too big a concept to absorb.

Bring everything down to racism in all its forms, and accuse everyone of it if they aren't a meghan supporter.

Say you are a dumb DM reader or all your misconceptions about the golden couple are derived by your gullible acceptance of what you read. Ignoring the obvious logic that everyone, themselves included, derive their opinion from what they read and hear.

My favourite. Divert and deflect! Bring up Andrew and before you know it everyone is discussing him and running down rabbit holes.

If Andrew doesn't work progress to how William isn't nice and kate is boring and Charles is an adulterer, because something that happened 30 years ago is of course relevant to M&H lying about their family today.

I shall call this the Sussex Squad handbook. 😂

MayQueeen · 23/05/2023 21:30

‘Sussex Squad handbook.’

😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂

do they get a prize for completing it?

rattymol · 23/05/2023 21:42

It is that kind of childish posting that pushes people into divisive positions.
You want an adult conversation, then don't name call posters with different views from you.

Maybe tell them that? I've been the focus of some horrible bullying, so don't lecture me on what I post.

tigger2022 · 23/05/2023 22:10

It’s pretty much every thread on the RF section that ends up getting spammed, so people are just exasperated!

SweetTooth2 · 23/05/2023 22:12

Well, this thread started off so well!! Didn't take long for the personal attacks and downward spiral to occur!

It's really sad :(

There do seem to be one or two particular posters that enjoy stirring things up and bringing race into places where it isn't/wasn't relevant.

Tried reporting or pointing it out and I'm deleted for troll hunting! I just laugh at them and their silly games now.

Sad thing is there are conversations to be had about privilege and racism (though not necessarily around the RF, but society as a whole) but using Meghan Markle as a poster girl for racism, is laughable.

polkadotdalmation · 23/05/2023 22:14

@SweetTooth2 Ah, but they think it does, so hence the spiral 🤷🏻‍♀️

rattymol · 23/05/2023 22:18

If you are using the phrase bringing race into places, then I always wonder if you are just blind to racism.
There is a lot of racism on MN, usually expressed by women who claim never to see racism or notice race.
It makes it very unwelcoming for black and brown women.

rattymol · 23/05/2023 22:20

And Meghan is not a poster girl for racism, but simply because someone is rich it does not mean it is okay to be racist about them.

MayQueeen · 23/05/2023 22:23

‘you are just blind to racism.

Actually as a poc, it’s posts like these that make me feel unwelcome. Stop reducing my life experience to petty point scoring on an online forum please. Stop acting as though you speak for all ‘black and brown women’. And stop making hyperbolic polarising accusations designed to get a reaction and derail a thread. The op was asking why it gets heated, I’d say it’s cos of pot stirring like this.
