Coronation cover is so naff

Whether you are a fan of the RF or not, does the coverage have to be quite so cringeworthy in tone? Is it worse than usual or am I just jaded? Just listening to some CoE rep on the news and the reverential toadying tone made me turn over. Can’t anyone report on what’s happening without being quite such kiss arses?

OP posts:

'English coronations were considered boring and Europeans had more pizazz'

🙄

Anyway, nice walkabout on the Mall going on. Let's hope William can keep from his 'snarling smile' and 'swivelling eyes'.

They're so natural and warm with the public aren't they.

"They're so natural and warm with the public aren't they"

This is sarcasm isn't it ?

Willa is cold and it's clear he's uncomfortable mixing with people

But it's about who you born to isn't it ?
They way things are going he won't need to worry about for much longer lol

Pull me up about it at the time, or report posts. To say a blanket 'you sneer endlessly' without any evidence is silly. Sarcasm and wit is not always sneering Grin.

So you think somoene saying 'the Germans smartened up the royal family' is not sneery? Righto, whatever.

Sadly, endless sneery posts don't break TG. But seriously, you know that is what you do... you have pet sneery words for, and about, H&M, and use them all the time. Carry on if that's your thing, I just found it rather hypocriticial (hate that word but there you go) you pulling someone up for 'sneering'.

I've only ever called Harry 'Harold', as he indeed refers to himself or Haz as he was referred to in one of his many media appearances. I've never called his wife anything.

There is a difference between mild piss taking and sneering about 'The Germans smartened up the rf'.

Cold? Hmm we obviously won't agree here but William seems very pleasant and at ease mixing with people as does Kate.

I'm not talking about the names... it's the endless sneering of him and her and what they do. Waaah! I'm not going back and looking, you know what I mean, but up to you. You sneer at them all the time.

Do you remember what programme that was? I might listen on BBC Sounds.

Didn't hear David Olusoga, but I recommend the first of the Rest is History podcasts for lots of nerdy stuff on the origins of the ritual. https://podcasts.apple.com/gb/podcast/the-rest-is-history/id1537788786?i=1000611634619

The Mall is genuinely loads of people having a ball. I walked it yesterday and there was lots going on but I didn’t see any royals. I imagine the crowd out there massively appreciate a bit of a walk about to thank them. It’s a nice touch. It’s mainly the super keen camped out but there are tonnes of people just milling about.
it’s going to be absolutely rammed tomorrow so I am now going to give it a miss and just watch on the telly.

It does seem a good atmosphere, the people interviewed seem to have come from far and wide. In all the negativity we see online such as this thread it is really nice seeing people enjoying the build up.

I've said it before I'm not a massive fan of all the robes, jewels etc, the destiny stone could've stayed in Scotland if it were down to me but it is nice and refreshing fo see smiling people on the telly enjoying themselves and how nice for an impromptu walkabout.

@Janiie William never looks at ease

sashagabadon · 05/05/2023 15:12

William is getting better at meeting the public though - I think he has loosened up a lot. Kate is very very good - she converses naturally, has good reactions to unexpected things and generally seems to genuinely enjoy her interactions with people.
She might well be "thank god that is over" afterwards but I doubt it and you could never tell if so.

vera99 · 05/05/2023 15:13

"Work" - basically making small talk about the weather whilst clenching your bum cheeks. With a pliant audience roaring with laughter at your every inflection. Long to Reign over us and all that.

I think they do the best they can given their personalities. I feel William just does not want to do it so has to brace himself, and Kate over compensates accordingly.

I wish they'd rolled up to that pub in jeans or if not, casual clothes. Kate looked totally out of place and William looked like a 50 year old Rotarian! I think Charles has far more dress sense than his son, he always looks quite sharp.

It is just all so weird to have everyone hanging off your every word because of who you are and not what you are like, but hey... that's fame for you I suppose...

She does seem very natural, doesn't seem fake or stilted in her reactions and responses.

Just listened to it, and then the hilarious next one about disastrous coronations!

BewareTheBeardedDragon · 05/05/2023 16:05

All royal coverage is a total cringe fest imo. I haven't seen any of the current dirge. Loving the video game refs / my dc are rooting for the crown falling off his head. It's the only thing that would make it in any way interesting for them.

LadyKenya · 05/05/2023 16:33

Goodness me. William, and Kate doing a walkabout. All they have to do is ask a few inane questions, leaving the other person doing all the talking, while they just nod sagely along. The public lap it all up, whilst declaring how great it was to meet them. 😲

Roussette · 05/05/2023 16:38

It will be put down as a 'work engagement' on the Court Circular though... every bit adds up!

They walked around for half an hour. I do think they could've done a lot longer. I know it's peculiar, but iIt means so much to those superfans

What do you suggest they discuss? Quantum physics? Existentialism?

LadyKenya · 05/05/2023 16:42

Not at all@derxa . But that would make a change from the tired, old format that they seem to trot out, I daresay.

Freezylap · 05/05/2023 16:52

Totally agree and the BBC are the worst. Can’t watch Breakfast at the minute. Gauge the mood of the nation for god’s sake. Nobody cares about the coronation bar a few loonies camped on the mall.

I know. I watched the footage of W&K today and yesterday. I thought how well they did and surely The Grumps wouldn't come after them for this. But here we are! There were people from all over the world in those crowds and they loved it. Some posting videos on Twitter.

I'm not knocking it, not in the slightest. The Royalists just love love love it. I just think they could've stayed out much longer than half an hour, that's all.

Those thousands from all the UK and all over the world have variously been described on MN over the last few days as old, Tory, thick, below average IQ, lower class, stupid, cap doffing, subservient, peasants. So thousands and thousands of people who've made the effort to be in London to watch the parades, the thousands who've come from all over the world to soak up the atmosphere are all, what, pig ignorant, brainless dolts?

No-one's going to be won over to the republican side by being belittled and insulted.
