Coronation cover is so naff

Whether you are a fan of the RF or not, does the coverage have to be quite so cringeworthy in tone? Is it worse than usual or am I just jaded? Just listening to some CoE rep on the news and the reverential toadying tone made me turn over. Can’t anyone report on what’s happening without being quite such kiss arses?

But the spoon @Atethehalloweenchocs 🤣

I had to google the spoon - didn't know anything about that.

Baffled at the Stone of Destiny travelling from Edinburgh to London for the event! 😄

stone of destiny

Stone of Destiny heads south for coronation

The ancient symbol of Scotland's monarchy leaves Edinburgh Castle on its way to London for the coronation.

I don't know anything about spoons or stones but I'm guessing they are all historically significant. Not just that Charles likes a big spoon to carry about on his days out.

'I have never heard anything so ridiculous, both of them talking in cut glass plummy voices saying to enjoy the weekend and "mind the gap" ... honestly I give up. They sound like someone from a bygone age'

One minute folk say there isn't any build up or coverage, next posters are slagging off the 'sycophancy' of said apparent non coverage and now their 'cut glass plummy' voices for releasing a nice feel good message. Would you prefer they put on a broad scouse accent perhaps?

I thought the pub visit was a nice laid back touch. They seem such classy but down to earth, likeable people.

It'll all be over soon, all you bitter resentful republicans need only to busy yourselves avoiding the telly for one more day Grin.

No. It is just ridiculous to have this message going out all over the weekend on the tubes from two hugely entitled and wealthy people who are lording it over us. Honestly it is laughable, wish I was in London to see the reactions.

Call me bitter if you like. Don't care. I could come up with a few choice names for those buying into all of this, but I won't.

I cannot wait for it to be over.

@Janiie
"I thought the pub visit was a nice laid back touch"

Nothing says laid back like packing the pub with your own staff and pretending you popped in unannounced lol

Ok I think I've found one person who fell for it lol !

The spoon is to carry the unicorn egg in surely?

Roussette · 05/05/2023 11:29

South Africa none too happy this morning with the Star of Africa the world's largest diamond 530carats being used for his sceptre which he will hold throughout the ceremony. They want it back

It was presented to the Monarchy in 1905 whilst Africa was under our colonial rule.

Novella4 · 05/05/2023 11:37

The star of Africa stolen 100 years ago - Hardly ancient ritual is it ?

I'm surprised royalists dont know about the about the anointing spoon and this Republican does

I'm of the belief that despite a lot of waffle about history a lot of royalists don't know exactly what is is they are supporting

The anointing has been clung on to as it was used to convey divine right for centuries - in the days when some belived all that
The 'royals' have kept all the ritual to help with the con

The carriages and other Disney aspects - not ancient . A couple of hundred years if that .
English Coronations were often drunken and disorderly . They smartened up a bit when the Germans took over.

They stole the stone from Scotland too

FiddleLeaf · 05/05/2023 11:44

Cringeworthy tone-deaf propaganda

Rhondaa · 05/05/2023 11:52

'English Coronations were often drunken and disorderly . They smartened up a bit when the Germans took over '

The Germans. Oh this thread. All the posters that bicker on other threads trying to pretend they just do not agree with nastiness and unfair scrutiny are showing their true colours here.

Deep breaths and smelling salts all round I'd suggest.

Novella4 · 05/05/2023 11:53

?

What are you in about ?

I'm referring to the Hanoverians

Novella4 · 05/05/2023 11:56

House of Hanover

George was about 50th ( !) in line for the throne but was drafted in because everyone closer was Catholic

Rhondaa · 05/05/2023 11:57

'They stole the stone from Scotland too'

I believe it is only here for the Coronation and is being returned after?!

Rhondaa · 05/05/2023 11:58

Well call them that then. Your sneery 'the Germans' was meant as just that, a sneer.

Good grief Janiie... with all due respect, you sneer endlessly ... honestly you do, so it's a bit rich you pulling someone up on that.

I quite enjoyed David Olusoga on R4 yesterday saying 'The Coronation has bits of ceremony that have been passed down for over a thousand years and it is weird, far weirder than their weddings and funerals that are pretty modern ceremonies, it's worth watching just to see how weird it is'.

He was completely history geeking out 😂

Oh! That has actually made me want to watch it!

I saw a couple of buntings around our area. But that's it.

I really want to know if Waitrose has started producing the Coronation Quiche yet. Because the one I made was bloody awful.

medianewbie · 05/05/2023 12:03

Rockybooboo · 05/05/2023 07:48

Charles and Camilla have recorded a special message that will be played across all 2,570 UK rail stations and the 270 London Underground stations over the Coronation weekend

That's pretty arrogant. They're assuming that everyone wants to hear them talk. The Queen didn't do that.

The 'Mind the Gap' tone was really odd. He sounded embarrassed to be saying it.

medianewbie · 05/05/2023 12:04

I liked rhe beer label: 'DOOM' being so prominent in yesterday's pub pics Grin

Sorry Tired but that made me laugh 🤣

I haven't attempted it although I do make quiches. I like broad beans small and shelled (what a faff to do that), I know the spinach would give me a soggy bottom, no cheese, that should be law in a quiche... and tarragon isn't my favourite herb.

All in all I'll stick with my favourites.

TiredOfCleaning · 05/05/2023 12:19

Smile @Roussette

It did have a soggy bottom even though I cooked the spinach down and down and down and down. Although at a certain point (I was also drinking wine) i lost the will and just dumped it in.

I am not a natural quiche maker though tbf. I just went on the Waitrose coronation part of the website and there is a lovely pic of a quiche with asparagus and peas in it which sounds more to my taste much better.

Roussette · 05/05/2023 12:21

Asparagus and peas sounds delish! Much better than the Coro one!

NeverTrustAPoliceman · 05/05/2023 12:27

I asked the Waitrose manager where the vegan version of the Coronation Quiche was. Yes, petty minded, out and proud. Sadly they didn't have one. Oh well...

I do quite like Waitrose but carefully boycott all the Duchy stuff.

Rhondaa · 05/05/2023 12:54

Roussette · 05/05/2023 11:59

Pull me up about it at the time, or report posts. To say a blanket 'you sneer endlessly' without any evidence is silly. Sarcasm and wit is not always sneering Grin.

So you think somoene saying 'the Germans smartened up the royal family' is not sneery? Righto, whatever.

Inkanta · 05/05/2023 13:08

I looked around for Coronation Quiche this week but no luck. No one stocking it. I'm trying to show willing - I like Brits get togethers but I'm not a royalist. I used to be a royalist - I was blind but now I see😉

AskMeMore · 05/05/2023 13:33

I think all the coverage just shows how ridiculous it all is. Although I did enjoy the coverage of how different the Royal Family in the Netherlands are. They at least look like they belong in the modern world and not as if they are trying to cosplay Victorian families.

Novella4 · 05/05/2023 13:46

@Janiie

I assumed people didn't want details but ok then

English coronations were considered boring and Europeans had more pizazz . That's what I meant by 'smartening up'
But I get why you are touchy about the 'royals'

Why the fuss about Germans ? We know Phillip was German and danish .

George ( house of Hanover ) was actually 56th in line for the throne - so many breaks in this so called 1000 year lineage

All of us here have the same lineage !
