What are you eating at your Coronation Party?

I was going to have a BBQ but I am not convinced we will have the weather for one.

Sandwiches, scones and cakes could be a option but might be a bit twee and not too filling?

I worry with frozen party food it's too much like a kids birthday party.

I don't want to spend ages over the stove either!

We will be about 8 adults, a few teenagers and a few kids. We like a drink so plenty of beers and wine but the food is stumping me!

What are you having to eat on Saturday?

I'm doing similar and planning to do BBQ food in the oven if it rains.

Also doing pulled pork, a chilli, salads, jacket potatoes, cheese board, pate, sandwiches / wraps and then a selection of cakes / cupcakes / deserts.

Following this thread now for other ideas!

I’m sure many people will be eating their usual cheap food in this cost of living crisis. Charlie having a party doesn’t magically put cash in their bank accounts.

Are people being given a coronation food budget? No didn’t think so.

carriedout · 30/04/2023 13:17

One in seven parents are skipping meals at the moment, so around 15% of people will presumably be eating very little.

It is not easy to watch £250m be spent on this one event.

BooksAndHooks · 30/04/2023 13:17

Sandwiches, quiche, Victoria sponge, scones, mini sausages etc the normal sort of buffet fillers really.

Going to have ours Sunday so I can spend Saturday baking.

Quite.

Yanno it doesn't matter. There are those who want to do the party thing/break up life/eat the nice things.

I'm personally not arsed and working all day that day so couldn't do anything if I wanted to but others can fill their boots.

It just doesn't matter and the threads in the right place for it. Let people crack on.

Exactly my feelings. I’m not ‘anti royal’ nor a royalist - couldn’t care if they went away but don’t wish them harm.

But spending £250 million to have some bloke anointed ‘by god’ whilst people are actively starving?

It’s tone deaf, smack of horrific ego and makes me far less ‘Long Live the King’ and more ‘Vive La Revolution’.

I won’t be watching.

There are people who would love to eat nice food whether it’s to join in with the coronation or not, but they can’t.

I’m not one of them, I’m not struggling financially, but many are and it should be acknowledged.

Pieceofpurplesky · 30/04/2023 13:29

I am not really bothered but my parents are on their 80s and are very much looking forward to it.

I am doing afternoon tea. Coronation chicken, ham and cheese sandwiches. Scones. Victoria sponge cake (all home made to keep it cheap)
I will drink Prosecco and watch with a half turned up nose at the cost, whilst secretly enjoying the spectacle

sittingonacornflake · 30/04/2023 13:34

We are making the coronation quiche and some crown shaped biscuits with different fillings (just jam and Nutella). We do also have a bbq planned, but not necessarily on the day itself (depends on the weather) which will be different kebabs and then a selection of salads from Waitrose.

smilingthroughgrittedteeth · 30/04/2023 13:51

Ive ordered a cream tea for me, DP, My mum and kids. We always spend saturdays together anyway and often have a takeaway or buffet style meal so i just thought it was a nice excuse to do something different. My children are obsessed with the royal family so will want to watch.

If being appalled at the cost of putting a crown on Charlie’s head when people can’t feed their kids makes me a misery, I’ll take that.

roarfeckingroarr · 30/04/2023 14:05

The OP has asked what people are having for lunch on the day, not debating the merits of the monarchy / spending.

YellowAndGreenToBeSeen · 30/04/2023 14:08

It’s tied in. Watching / celebrating the Coronation justifies the cost the government are spending.

Right so go start your own thread in chat if you want to whinge. Or go to style and beauty and have the same whinge over stupid priced bags and people not being able to eat.

The OP started a harmless thread in the right topic. Give it a swerve FFS.

TheLightSideOfTheMoon · 30/04/2023 14:11

I’m supposed to be planning a Coronation party for the adults with LD I look after and due to various unforeseen circumstances I’ve so far done NOTHING.

Please keep posting your menus and ideas. I beg you.

I didn't have a go at the OP, I just posted a comment about the topic that was started.

I'm tired of being told I'm not allowed a view, just because my view doesn't suit the people who think they own this board.

They are my monarchy as well as your monarchy. This board is for everyone.

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 30/04/2023 14:12

We aren’t having a party, but we are having a nice lunch - smoked salmon sandwiches, cucumber sandwiches, Battenberg cakes and rum babas. And I’ll be drinking Asti all day.

MaverickSnoopy · 30/04/2023 14:12

Going to decide next weekend. I can't get excited about it. I'm very much the sort of person to celebrate a Tuesday - any excuse and I'm there. I always celebrate landmark things, royal or otherwise. I wanted to mark the event of living through a coronation and being part of history.

I just can't seem to get on-board, I think he's woeful and I'm very mixed about the cost. I know it will being more money into the economy than what is being spent on it, but what comes in won't help those who are living in poverty or those who really need that money. I feel quite sad about feeling like this as I like to mark things such as this.

My go to is usually an afternoon tea.

Troublewithlichen · 30/04/2023 14:13

At my coronation party, when I am crowned Queen of the Oaks and wear a crown of oak leaves, I will invite you all to a mass roam of the land that belongs to the people. We will eat apples and cheese.

itsgettingweird · 30/04/2023 14:15

So you have a slow cooker?

Pulled pork, bread, cheeses, stuffing and apple sauce is always a hit here when I have a buffet.

Then have normal foods such as sausage rolls and veg sticks, crisps etc.

Then lots of desserts - those little ones you can eat in a mouthful 🤣

Have you been employed as thread monitor? 🤓

I am from another country, and so I am seeing this as an outsider.

Firstly.... Wtf is this quiche with broad beans in all about? Who decided this, and why broad beans? We even had a discussion about it and decided that it must be because it's vegetarian and that broad beans are popular / very British / filling. We didn't all agree on the latter. (we don't get these beans, but I have tasted them and wouldn't like to ever again).

Secondly, even here on the news we are hearing about the UK cost of living crisis. We hear of the strikes, and the appalling state of the NHS. So I just simply cannot wrap my head around spending this amount of money on ONE occasion, to most likely have to spend it all again in the not too distant future when it's William's turn.

We tried to find a breakdown of what makes up this 250million but couldn't seem to find it. On top of that we are thinking there will be sales of merchandise as well.

It has been quite the talking point here in the southern hemisphere.
