2 weeks was it in the marines before he cried off, and he gets to wear this. It must be that magic cloth I supped with my mother's milk ....
**
Soon, everyone was calling out and laughing.
“Oh dear!” thought the Emperor. “Now everyone knows I could not see the cloth! They will know I didn’t speak up because I was afraid of what people would think of me. What will they think of me now?”
But the Parade must go on. And so the Emperor continued to walk. And the servants behind him continued to hold high the train that wasn’t there.

Well said Vera99

It’s an embarrassment to those of us with families in the forces who btw are serving with and for their comrades as much as for king and country.

Louloulouenna · 29/08/2023 13:31

Ooh yes, let’s have a revolution and get the state to requisition private property. It’s worked out so well for other countries.

Serenster · 29/08/2023 13:31

Even royal families deposed by revolutions have successfully claimed compensation from the new regimes for their seized assets (there were quite a few in the last century). Best to just murder them all, like the Bolsheviks did, to make sure there’s no-one to claim. Although then your revolutionary leaders would be guilty of murder and liable to be tried in court. So as new regimes have tended to do throughout history, they declare themselves above the law. Ironic that!

The Russian people can't get rid of Putin but at least Charles doesn't order that his enemies are pushed out of windows

Blimey we really are going to hell in a habdcart of we need to compare ourselves to Putin's Russia to feel better about ourselves!

Iwantcakeeveryday · 29/08/2023 16:03

Right? "at least they're not Putin' isn't the best defence for keeping them.

Btw, I wouldn’t describe myself as a royalist necessarily. If someone can point me towards a republic which functions better than the UK, particularly in terms of civil liberties, tolerance and an independent judiciary I could well be persuaded.

To be honest, I'm not particularly a Republican. I'd be happy with a scandi style monarchy- much slimmed down, far fewer houses, less of the silly protocols and rules that are only there to make them seem important, fewer sycophants from the staff to the press to people who block emergency vehicles in their Union Jack suits waiting for women to give birth. I'm not particularly fond of them getting legislative opt outs either.

I would also suggest we have a monarchy because we are a tolerant, fairly stable democracy. Not that we have a tolerant and stable democracy because we have a monarchy. Most people are too apathetic about them to get too worked up about them in real life, so they can’t be bothered to get rid of them. And we quite like all the scandals they can't seem to help themselves getting into. They are like the nations' pets.

upinaballoon · 29/08/2023 16:25

The Russians got rid of the Tsar and the Russian royal family, through shooting I believe, and they got Stalin and Kruschev and now they have Putin. Ever so democratic.
I think it was Novella a few pages back, who recommended that someone should read '1984'. I never did but I had to read 'Animal Farm' at an early age, and I think I have always been a little swayed by it.

Hippyhippybake · 29/08/2023 16:31

Ha ha, I think “nation’s pets” is a great description!

Novella4 · 29/08/2023 20:39

Good lord , revolution ?!
Unclench .

Even Philip said they’d go quietly .

And as for what the Windsors would keep . Well let’s settle up with the unpaid taxes first and see what’s left

I agree with Rosa Luxembourg- didn’t she say better the most expensive republic than the cheapest monarchy ?

It’s the principle you see . Somethings can’t be measured in filthy lucre .
Start with making the Windsors subject to the same laws as the rest of us .

And of course , we unfortunately DO have the most expensive monarchy in Europe ( feeding off one of most rapidly declining economies ) and consistently reducing the flow of money that the ‘royals’ take from us should be a priority.

If the money was stopped you wouldn’t see the Saxe Coburg Gotha Windsors for dust .
We have a a string of male pale stale ‘kings’ lined up. William lacks any hint of warmth or personality so he won’t be increasing their appeal
Charles is tired and is now saying he just wants to be a ‘caretaker monarch’
So much for all that reforming zeal- you didn’t fall for that did you ?

They don’t know what they are doing any more , lurching from one blunder to the next
I expect each reform to push them further and further away from power .
If they cut his money William will likely rage quit anyway
He looks on the verge of it right now

Hippyhippybake · 29/08/2023 21:25

On a per capita basis, the British Monarchy is not the most expensive in Europe.

Hippyhippybake · 29/08/2023 22:03

Not sure who you’re replying to Rousette but the article puts the UK Royals as the fifth most expensive in Europe with the Belgians 10c a head behind.

Hippyhippybake · 29/08/2023 22:03

fat finger - 30 cents!

Hippyhippybake · 29/08/2023 22:19

The figures for the other European Monarchies also don’t include security costs and the costs for security for the head of state and their family in Republics such as the USA is also not publicly available.

Roussette · 29/08/2023 22:34

The figures from my article?
It doesn't say

Hippyhippybake · 29/08/2023 22:41

The figures quoted are the respective equivalent to the UK sovereign grant payment and don’t include security. I’m not aware of any monarchy or head of state that publishes the annual cost of security but happy to be corrected!

And meanwhile poor old Sarah Ferguson recovers from the Diep flap and mastectomy combined. A bloody nightmare for her daughters and ex husband.

StartupRepair · 29/08/2023 22:50

Where did Charles say he will be a caretaker monarch?

ALittleTeawithmilk · 30/08/2023 03:14

Wow. 6 storey high billboard.

They really don’t like him @MissElinorDashwood

My friend went through this, it took a good year to recover in any way. She is well now and in remission.

I understand Sarah is up in Balmoral with the rest of the family.

Glad they are being nicer to her, always seemed very petty

OliviaBean · 30/08/2023 08:56

Wow that picture going to church was really distasteful. When they tell you who they are, believe them.

As for the cost of the monarchy, we will never truly know. Needless to say that none of them, born, married in, hangers on will ever want for a thing.

Hopefully now that QE has died that the whole protocol, bowing and scraping to these idiots will be sent back to the middle ages.

Novella4 · 30/08/2023 20:51

Hippyhippybake · 29/08/2023 21:25

On a per capita basis, the British Monarchy is not the most expensive in Europe.

Not only is the British monarchy the most expensive in Europe it is substantially more expensive

And that figure is itself based on the fiddled figures that the ‘royals ‘ attempt to pass off as the total

Of course their travel and security isn’t included

And before the weak ass ‘ we’d have to pay for a president’s security ‘excuse is trotted out
-yes we’d pay for a president and his immediate family if he had one.

But we are currently being shaken down paying for extended Windsor relatives and hangers on - I guarantee you couldn’t even name them

We pay for all the Windsor 18 ( is it more ?) palaces to be fully guarded round the clock , year in year our ,regardless of whether they are lying empty .

The wealth of the UK royals has ballooned in the past 50 years and especially since the Soverign Grant was introduced

Before the grant was brought In ( by the Tories need you ask) each time the Windsors had their hand out for more money, it could be debated in parliament
That kept it a live issue
Thats all stopped now .

There is added benefit that it’s now easier to pull the wool over the eyes of the ….unquestioning . Some still try to trot out the ‘they cost us 50p each ! line

And after filling their coffers , they don’t even try to disguise their contempt for the population , as we saw with Andrew up front with Willy so the photographers could get a nice clear photo of Willy with Uncle sex offender and friend to pedophiles.
