Will Sussex be their last names? How does that work?

If they have their titles as their birthright, then of course they can use them when older. No one could stop them as things stand. Their parents using them is doesn’t “make sure “ they can use them when they are older but makes no difference. The now Duke of Edinburgh’s children’s titles were not used but they are still perfectly entitled to style themselves Prince and Princess should they now choose to do so. So no o e needs to make sure I’d anything

Some posters have put forward that when William becomes King he will take their titles away - with a ‘letters patent’ - (I don’t presume to understand the legalities here and thought if born to become a prince/princess always a prince/princess, but there’s been lots of opinions on mn that he will strip them of titles. Indeed there has been posters wishing he would strip them of titles.) So, I thought that perhaps it was Harry making sure (I was using the two words colloquially), that it would be harder for William to take them away (if he has a mind to - and we don’t know if he does, or will).

Also Harry has made clear he believes in the monarchy so why wouldn’t he have his children assume their titles when they could? And he picked a good time to do it - a decent period after his grandmother’s death and before his father’s coronation.

Their titles only have significance in the UK. The US does not recognize foreign aristocratic or hereditary titles. When applying for their American passports they will use first name, middle name, last name, with no title.

Their surname is Mountbatten Windsor. Or maybe it's hyphenated.

Hooklander · 11/03/2023 21:17

Wasn't that from when their parents left the UK and said their progeny would be brought up without tidles? And that was the surname announced?

That never happened.

That never happened.

Omid Scobie announced it for them, I saw it being reposted under his latest christening announcement. I’ll see if I can find it again.

PicturesOfDogs · 12/03/2023 07:13

Here it is. OS wouldn’t have said this, if they hadn’t told him to I presume.

Oh dear, Omid's tweet has aged like curdled milk...

headstone · 12/03/2023 07:37

They now live in a country that fought very hard to rid itself of the British royal family and they are insisting on titles for their children.

Omid does not announce for the Sussexes. When their spokesperson either makes an announcement or confirms something, Omid will state that.

To top it off, that tweet was before they left the palace. Omid met MM for the first time during that CW students engagement the night before she left the country. He was invited (for his magazine) together with another reporter from Town and Country. Not sure he has ever met Harry.

It was the palace who said said H&M did not want titles. But they later said they were not consulted and just saw the announcement with Master Archie Mountbatten Windsor.

ThePoshUns · 12/03/2023 08:10

Archie Sussex and Lilibet Sussex. Future Love Island contestants.

JenniferBarkley · 12/03/2023 08:38

They have two options.

A) Use Sussex as a surname when they need one, like William and Harry used Wales and William's kids were using Cambridge

B) Continue to use Mountbatten-Windsor like Edward's kids.

Given they've indicated they only intend to use the titles on formal occasions, presumably it'll be B. Although leaving the baggage aside, Sussex is just the nicer name.

Why then did they not, at the time, use the title that Archie was entitled to use, Earl of Dumbarton? They could have corrected the Palace and said he was using this title as was their right. It would seem that they actually wanted to hold out for him to be Prince Archie. Which is actually a bit strange as it is a lesser ranking title than Earl 🤔

Whenharrymetsmelly · 12/03/2023 09:32

Wasn't Mountbatten an "unsavoury" character, to put it nicely?

newbeggins · 12/03/2023 09:41

When are they going to turn up and support the people if Sussex (parents not the children)

MrsFinkelstein · 12/03/2023 09:47

Morestrangethings · 11/03/2023 21:20

Did they ever say the kids would be brought up without titles? Or was that the tabloid media and social media?

Omid Scobie, who was accepted as their unofficial spokesperson for a while, had the "scoop" they had forgone titles for Archie.

They never corrected him publicly.

Applesonthelawn · 12/03/2023 09:55

They rejected the title Earl of Dumbarton because it started with the word "dumb". This is what Meghan said herself in one of the televised appearances. At the time I thought Dumbarton (emphasis on second syllable and not on first as she was saying it) actually sounded nice, but since they have now fallen so low and everyone can mercilessly take the piss, it's probably a good thing, Imagine what South Park would have made of it.

Nobody thinks the children aren't innocent @Price21210
You're being extremely disingenuous to say that.

I don't think they are ''HRH'' Prince ARchie and Princess Lilibet. Their parents can't use the HRH so surely the HRH hasn't been given to the children of non-working royals Confused That would be ridiculous.

The HRH is automatic. They’ve been HRH Prince/ss since their grandfather became King.

It’s not been announced yet that I can see if they intend to use it.

even if they don’t use it, it’s still officially theres. Basically same as Camilla previously being POW but not using it.

How did William and Kate support the people of Cambridge🤔
in fact how do.any of them support the population of the UK?

BlackFriday · 12/03/2023 10:07

"Because if Harry had married and had children with someone else none this would be an issue. But because it's Archie and Lilibet they are not entitled to their titles or style despite what British law says. It's just ridiculous."

Why would him marrying "someone else" mean this wouldn't be an issue? And what is it you're saying by "because it's A & L they're not entitled?

"It's just ridiculous" Well, something is, but probably not what you're thinking.

huffyhufferson · 12/03/2023 10:12

King Charles has put a block on the children using HRH titles. They can be Prince & Princess but not HRH.

weinerdog · 12/03/2023 10:12

Badger1970 · 11/03/2023 21:08

Their surnames are those of their parent's Dukedom.

If they had the intention of calling them Prince and Princess though, they chose very unusual first names (trying to be kind).

I really don't see what's wrong with the names. Archie isn't an ancient name but it sounds perfectly fine and to me, has connotations with royalty. Lilibet was a nickname so not a traditional name AFAIK. Also sounds fine and suits nicely with princess before it.

Where is the announcement of that?
