Will Harry and Meghan come to Coronation?

I do not think they will. They will stay away but all anyone will talk about is why they did not come and should they have come.

If only dear King Chuck had kept his promise of a curtailed coronation, slimmed down, cheaper, low key and all the rest of it

Well he's cut the duration from 3 hours to 90 mins, and the guest list from 8000 to 2000.

Plus carriages there and back and balcony. Then next day a concert at Windsor (tickets via charities KC&QC are associated with or by public ballot) plus beacons. Then on Sunday a Big Lunch (something that's held annually anyhow)

It's down to 90 minutes cos Camilla will be dying for a fag break. And 2,000 cucumber sandwiches will be a doddle for the catering staff at Buck House. The rest of it will be a huge spectacle for the peasants. That's the only bit that is for them.

I am highly amused by it all. How will security distinguish between camper outers and homeless on the Mall. Will one set be kicked out to allow the other people stay, or must you have a Union Jack flag to prove you're a genuine Coronation watcher or what.

WinnieTheW0rm · 10/03/2023 20:45

The 2000 are at the Abbey - don't think they all go for lunch!

But as for ER II's funeral, there will be receptions for guests - wasn't it the evening before (and for far greater numbers)?

AnnieGetYourWaterPistol · 10/03/2023 20:45

Charles coronation in real terms costs twice as much as his mothers. Don't be fooled, it is not slimmed down.
Charles is fond of spending other people's money on himself.

And he has cut the duration of the actual ceremony because nobody would be interested in watching it for that long.

Are the budgets run in the same way to make the comparison valid?

Not being gratuitously arsey, but methods for attributing costs across government depts was transformed in the 80s and 90s, and I'm not sure that comparisons that straddle it work terribly well when you're looking at involvement of multiple organisations

Well it will be interesting to see exactly who is booed.

And anyone trying to defend H&M would surely be jaded at this point.
Tyler Perry is probably appreciated as an ally with his gospel choir flown in by private jet. People who devote seemingly 10% of their waking hours countering everything they see as negative on mumsnet probs not so much.

10% Are you clocking me?!

I don't care a fig about Tyler Perry. And I also want do not have booing at the Coronation. Not because I am a Royalist, I'm not. But I accept what it is. And I hope it goes seamlessly. And for the sake of what is happening on the Coronation day, I do not want it fucked up by booing.

But if you do. You do you.

Roussette · 10/03/2023 20:53

*Do not want

No! You have to wave a royal tea towel !

Will they arrest protestors?

I might organise an Off With Their Heads party on the day.

Camilla has been bunking off quite a bit recently. Now, if she is not up to the job/doesn't like it/ can't do it due to ill health or infirmity, then she should retire gracefully. Leaving hundreds of willing civic minded folk who were looking forward to a visit just isn't on in the long term. I have my own views about what is going on here, but out of deference will keep them to myself for the time being.

Hold up a blank sheet of A4 paper and you'll be arrested! (it's happened)

Didn’t she just have covid again?

I wish you wouldn't.

But don't blame you.

Detained. Not arrested. There’s a difference (more legal technicalities, I know people here hate them 🤣).

Will they arrest protestors?

Could do - pre-emptive strikes on the leaders as they will be regarded as maybe likely to cause a breach of the peace or if they were to do it amongst throngs of ardent royalists may arrest them "for their own safety". They will be concerned given recent events and will be developing a strategy. Could be a controlled area in Hyde Park, say, where peaceful protest is allowed away from the event if the numbers were thought to be large. I have no idea how big it could be, but it will be something for sure.

She will come to out shine the other princesses

Hardly. If you want a beautiful black princess to admire there's Princess Angela of Liechtenstein.

Yes Harry is on record before he met Meghan saying he doesn't like England.

Oh vera,

How could you leave us hanging like that with your theories kept all to yourself. Just put a sentence with the capital letters for each word only, go on...I need something to do other than go to bed with Netflix again.

I reckon it's the old bunions, or her fear of having to co sign anything with Pen Maestro Chuck himself.

But don't blame you.

I'm tempted ... I'm a subscriber to Private Eye, which doesn't hold back .... but I am aware there are people like my dear old granny here who would have hit me with her umbrella for thinking such foul thoughts, and she was a lovely woman. My mum would have rolled her eyes and tutted as well. She queued up all night to be on the street near Westminster Abbey for the 1953 Coronation. It was a great experience of her life.

Roussette · 10/03/2023 21:12

After all... we can't say anything against the unelected Monarchy. There are no rules to say we have to abide. But hold up a blank sheet of A4 paper, and you are detained.

What have we become? Why? We live in a different time. Those reverence times have gone.

The Queen could avoid transparency, scrutiny and reverence but that was then. It is not now.

PillBoxes · 10/03/2023 21:13

The whole charade will be completely sanitised for the world audience. The RF need us to see how wonderful they are and it is important to ensure that the nodding serfs with their flags and tea towels and steel bladders are fully portrayed in all their loyal rapture.

A Trade Agreement with the US is needed too, so what with the Windsor Framework and an American married to a Prince, well they wouldn't want that image to go wrong would they?

And my very dear friend is a royalist (if that's the right word). I've known her all my life and I'm old. We just don't talk royalty. I can accept her views, I don't try to change her, it's ingrained!

@Serenster mentioned the photo taken during a time everyone agreed to no photos, then tweeted out by Scobie, then taken down.
I had not heard about that - but wasn't really reading any of the H&M stuff during that time.

Is it this one?
