The royal family

Drama between Eugenie/Jack and William/Kate

I missed this last year. Apparently Eugenie and Jack had wanted to love into Adelaide Cottage as their main British residence (they also live part-time in Portugal for Jack's work). But William and Kate successfully claimed Adelaide Cottage instead as their fourth or fifth house?
This apparently led to tension between the two families. Instead Jack and Eugenie live in Nottingham Cottage which has two bedrooms. They already have one child and Eugenie is pregnant. I am guessing this is why they wanted a slightly bigger house.

@vera99 · Today 07:27
I think we need to increasingly democratise their privileges, removing some glaring inconsistencies between the family and ordinary citizens, like death duties, taxation and sealed wills and the sovereign grant.

Surely the alternatives are:

If you fundamentally remove glaring inconsistencies between RF and ordinary citizens there are a lot more things the RF can do which are perfectly legal, and many people and businesses do all the time, to maximise income and reduce expenditure (taxes) etc. that they can’t or chose not to do now.

I hope KP is paying you for your advocacy - you are certainly doing a good job ! These non-dom privileges are a sticking point in a truly democratic accountable society anyway, Lord Rothermere lives in Monaco whilst operating his bile machine at the Mail.

These inconsistencies anyway could be legislated for or included in a transitional contract agreed between Windsor's and Parliament. Off the top of my head, which parts of the Crown Estate belongs to the nation, and which could be considered personal property ? But for these things to happen we need to have an active citizenry, that participates in elections based on knowledge and a desire to build a better Britain for the many not the few (remember that!) - not a cash machine to be robbed by the rich and the wool pulled over our eyes with Pomp and Circumstance. The existence of the Royal Family at the top of the establishment pyramid acts as a powerful disincentive to creating this awareness - they are not a force for good for real social change, but an obstacle on the way.

Can you hear the People sing ?

P.S my nephew who's a bit of cynic told me on WhatsApp !

The monarchy should probably stay, in my opinion
Imagine the vacuum in the masse's sense of self in the absence of religion and head of state
Everyone would be transgender or some other form of wack job !

HedwigIsMyDemon · 03/03/2023 10:15

@nilsoften couldn’t agree with you more! The deference and acceptance of this outdated hierarchy is for me one of the biggest criticisms of our education system. It’s terrifying that so many still think this outdated shit is ok 🙄.

I am no fan of Andrew but:
He was left Royal Lodge by the Queen Mum
He paid Crown Estate millions to extend the lease by 100 years
He spent several million of his own money refurbishing it.
Any rent is in addition to all of that.

So if Andrew inherited the Royal Lodge, surely its his to own, how can be turfed out?

I'm sure I read somewhere the Queen owned like half of Mayfair buildings wise on her personal property/income portfolio.

He inherited the lease.

The Queen Mum didn’t own it so he doesn’t either. It’s owned by Crown estates.

Brazilianadventure · 03/03/2023 11:06

@nilsoften 😂 so pointing out the flaws in the current tax system is being a royalist. If you don’t consider the other side of the “democratisation” debate you end up with unforeseen consequences.

I completely agree working out where the divide between personal property and crown estates would be extremely difficult and should be done as a first step. David Cameron refused to work up a plan for what happens if the UK voted to leave the EU, and that clearly worked out so well. It is one of the reasons Scotland achieving independence would make Brexit look like a walk in the park, as no one will do due diligence before the vote and then no one will agree where the divide is and both sides will feel wronged.

The tax laws need a real overhaul but, with the current short term adversarial approach to being in government, no politician will stand on the basis of reforming them.

nilsoften · 03/03/2023 11:18

With Sir Keir on the brink of No 10 he can do some serious Sherpa work on taxation reform and abolition of the House of Lords. But Rome was not built in a day, trying to roll back the damage of 13 years of Tory misrule will be long and hard, and he will come under a lot of flack along the way. But first the British people will need to reject the Tories once and for all and if Sir Keir is a true reformer and wants to leave a legacy for himself and Labour, he will need to tackle electoral reform as well - or the Tories could sneak back in FPTP in an economic downturn. The RF are doing a good job of destroying themselves, and the path to a Republic will be a long one but make no mistake that process has begun.

They aren't even working royals. They should take what they're given and think themselves lucky. Or buy their own like the rest of us.

OK, so he owns the lease, surely that can't just be rescinded? I'm not a Andrew fan BTW!

They won’t be able to just scrap it with nothing going back. Officially, assuming he does leave, it’ll be his decision.

I imagine that his brother saying “you can stay there without me funding you or move to X place and I’ll fund to the tune of £€$£€$… up to you” will be quite persuasive though.

purpledalmation · 03/03/2023 12:13

I read that Eugenie and Beatrice were the royals who were 'appalled' by the decision to evict Harry and Meghan from frogmore cottage so that Andrew could live there. Am I being cynical to think this is nothing to do with H&Ms lease not being renewed but more to do with daddy being chucked out of his huge mansion, where they could also stay and visit with their parents?

LadyVictoriaSponge · 03/03/2023 12:27

I’m amazed Royal Lodge only costs 10k a month to run, surely it must be a lot more than that, the heating bill alone would be more??

Gilmorehill · 03/03/2023 12:30

Mummyoflittledragon · 03/03/2023 05:31

According to the papers, H&M were said to be paying up 360k annually. This, I imagine, is speculation. But going back to the 2.4m H&M are said to have paid part in rent, part in renovation costs, I do think Charles or possibly HMQ paid this or a large chunk thereof and to save face it was portrayed as H&M. It would also make sense then as to why KC has asked for the property back as he has made clear he isn’t going to subsidise them when they’re permanently abroad, non working royals and all the other stuff, which has been much discussed.

I never believed H and M actually coughed up for the renovations. That’s not a dig at them. It was BP wanted to put an end to the story, IMHO. I’m not sure H and M could just come up with that money themselves. BP doesn’t want media scrutiny of the financial affairs of the RF.

I had nc for another reason on another thread and got muddled up. When I realised my mistake I fessed up. It's that simple - I'm back to vera99 from now on.

Well done. Bearing in mind we have posters who NC primarily to post insulting posts on a thread (usually PAs) then disappear, I welcome your transparency.

I agree if H&M had personally forked out I think they would be shouting extremely loudly now that they had paid for Frogmore and would fight the ‘eviction’ the fact they haven’t speaks volumes.

jeffgoldblum · 03/03/2023 12:48

Accidentally name changing on a thread is supposed to be fixed by an update from mn , only those posting from the app ( which as usual doesn't get updated!) , are still able.
Hopefully this will stop sock puppetry.

Yes good point. There’s been a few articles recently claiming M was shocked at how little money H had. I find that a bit hard to believe when you consider what was spent on their home. Then again, it’s hard when someone else holds the purse strings. I know who someone who married into a very wealthy family and she got a shock when she realised her FIL was the one in charge.

I’ve made the same mistake on a few occasions, as I have different names for different topics or sensitive matters. It’s inevitable that mistakes happen. We are only human after all!

Sorry but I find changing names on the same thread and also within the same topic (which the 'confessing' poster appears to do) pretty dodgy. No wonder a lot of us are becoming more cynical about MN posters.
