My friend just sent me this. I adore Gabor mate and the work he does. His book 'in the realms of hungry ghosts' was life changing for me who had suffered serious addiction issues. But am I being too harsh to feel disappointed he's jumping on this band wagon of garbage. I'm sorry but Harry we're sick of listening to your trauma and no offence you've sung it to death, (and I don't even think it's that bad relative to how much he has gone on and on about it) and trauma aside you're a complete hypocrite with how you've treated you're family and the trauma you've put them through!!

And more military personnel are annoyed by broken homes comments.

I thought that a particularly egregious comment from Harry.

How can this be helping Meghan's plans and ambitions?

Wheresthebeach · 06/03/2023 10:43

Every time he speaks he does more damage. Its quite the circus he's creating. Considering the massive drug problem in the States he may find that his comments and admissions won't garner any sympathy. The on air diagnosis is shockingly unprofessional.

jeffgoldblum · 06/03/2023 10:44

Yes @Hooklander , I thought it was particularly demeaning and obviously not true a lot of the military are career driven and you often get sons or daughters joining because thier family members are already in the military.

Morestrangethings · 06/03/2023 10:45

Just to say: P. Harry did not say all military personnel come from dysfunctional homes. But it’s being reported on social media as though he did. So we are watching fiction become fact in people’s minds -again. Next thing we know ‘journalists’ will be reporting it that way too.

Facts Matter.

jeffgoldblum · 06/03/2023 10:47

I'm going by the two news articles I posted, I don't use sm for news or anything else .
So I'm critical of the actual words Harry used .

Exactly !

Also, it's a well known narrative of the army advertising that they will be the united family you need. Wayward youth going straight is their schtick. Nothing to see here.

Posters getting themselves all worked up over nothing.

Rinoachicken · 06/03/2023 11:02

This is what he said:

"I was also a fantastic candidate for the military," said Harry who lives in California after stepping down as a working royal.

"You know, I don't know how it is around the rest of the world but certainly in the UK we we tend to recruit from broken homes."

Do the army actively ‘recruit’ people who have unstable childhoods with a higher likelihood of trauma and ACES? I’m not sure I can believe that when you consider they also do psychological assessments as part of recruitment - the British army doesn’t want unstable soldiers if it can help it - they tend to be a hazard when given arms!

Maireas · 06/03/2023 11:04

Thanks for that, @Rinoachicken .
As pp said - facts do matter.

BeatricePortinari · 06/03/2023 11:06

I think the army is attractive to some people with difficult home lives.

It's also attractive to lots of other people for other reasons.

Harry is not careful about what he says and the impact on others.

jeffgoldblum · 06/03/2023 11:07

Are we now minimising the feelings of the mother whose daughter died after taking the same drug Harry is endorsing?

No one is up in arms here! , we are discussing Harry's latest foot in mouth moment.

And as someone with a ex military spouse i and others are entitled to feel however we like about his comments , without others talking over us , or implying we're being sensitive or disingenuous!

It is the second dumbest thing he has said after comparing the Taliban to chess pieces. He is undermining the efforts to support veterans by suggesting that the problems which they experience after leaving the forces may have come about anyway because they were already screwed up to begin with. Both comments strongly hint at the fact that he never had a real forces experience. just a lite one dreamed up by a committee of yes men.

BeatricePortinari · 06/03/2023 11:11

He's obviously now uncomfortable with his army career given his new political positioning and trying to distance himself:

I was drawn to the army because of my terrible childhood and I couldn't express my views it was just a job... means: it wasn't my fault and I'd never join now, cos I've taken the drugs and seen the light.

jeffgoldblum · 06/03/2023 11:15

My dh was in the Afghanistan war and the Iraq war , I could type many comments about what I think about Harry's words but I won't, two reasons
One I d find it hard to be polite!
Two I'm fed up with arguing with people who have no clue defending the stupidity.

jeffgoldblum · 06/03/2023 11:19

Also , without meaning to be rude or to single out any particular poster , but all this ' fake news' and 'facts matter' is beginning to sound a lot like Trump!

MagnificentSeaWolf · 06/03/2023 11:41

He just doesn't think before he speaks, or for some reason cannot logically think through the consequences of what he says.

The comment about UK army recruiting from broken homes. Offensive on so many levels. Effectively accusing the army of being exploitative in their recruitment practices (is resonant with grooming). Single or divorced parents of soldiers killed or injured in action - how will these comments be received by them? Families with exceptionally proud military histories (where children follow parents into the forces). He reduces their experience to being recruited as they are children of divorce.

So true !

Howsimplywonderful · 06/03/2023 12:00

Many families have wonderful military traditions, I can’t imagine they are happy

Ditto all the soldiers going to invcitus.

Howsimplywonderful · 06/03/2023 12:01

Beau Biden served in the military. I’m sure Joe Biden would be delighted Harry’s comments.

Howsimplywonderful · 06/03/2023 12:08

My mothers uses a phrase which seems particularly apt for Harry

’Empty vessels make the most noise’

Goodness me, have you contacted the army recruitment wing about how 'exploitative' and 'grooming' they are?
From their numerous 'belonging' videos showing people who come from 'failure to 'win' as well 'Carlisle to army' etc.?

Are you also offended by the lgbt/religious/internet, fashion and SM addicts recruitment adverts. Did you find all those 'expoitative'?

VixenTodd · 06/03/2023 12:16

@notanotheroneagain Harry needs fans like you. You make him sound like a genius by comparison!

Puzzledandpissedoff · 06/03/2023 12:19

Harry did not say all military personnel come from dysfunctional homes. But it’s being reported on social media as though he did

Anyone with sense will take the media's version with a pinch of salt and look for the original version themselves, and what Harry said was "in the UK we we tend to recruit from broken homes", which implies that many will be just that

Yet again it's a matter of judgement - or lack of it - in that he'll have known perfectly well how this would be spun, even though it was already bad enough without spinning
Also yet another indication of how much covering was done for him before he was left to run his own mouth off

Think he needs detractors like yourself to elevate him to MENSA levels.

It was such a stupid comment it defies belief.
