For the benefit of those people who don’t watch South Park, it is a long-running US cartoon show (but most definitely aimed at adults) which covers the activities of primary school children in the town of South Park in Colorado. It is famed for both its profanity and dark humour, often sexual (the very first episode was titled “Kenny gets an Anal Probe”!), and its satire of various people and topics.
The Meghan and Harry episode, heavily based as it is on their recent activities and the publication of Spare, is clearly satirising them. South Park has famously done similar episodes in relation to Tom Cruise and Scientology (he hides in a closet and refuses to come out 🤣) and other celebrities.
The “Prince William rips Kate’s arm off at the altar and sticks it up his backside” excerpt that keeps being posted however is clearly just an example of the show’s pretty normal use of silly violence and sexual humour for shock value. It’s clearly not satire, as there was in 2011 absolutely no context for that act (as there is now due to Sussex fans’ love of pushing related hashtags on twitter - which actually makes me ponder if the South Park episode maybe wasn’t a catalyst for that rumour? It’s a curious coincidence…). And I think most celebrities have been the target of similar scenes in the show’s 15 year-plus run. If this episode gets high ratings, I would bet my bottom dollar they’ll feature the royal family again around the time of the coronation.
(I do from time to time watch South Park, and have for many years. It is sometimes very funny. I think that its creator’s best works were however The Book of Mormon and Team America: World Police, which my husband and I still quote to each other all the time 🤣 ).
