William being rude during public visit

William visited an Ipswich hospital. A staff member had made cakes for his visit and decorated them with union jacks.
William then took part in a video call with some children, including the sin if the woman who made the cakes, William said to the young boy: ‘Your mother’s feeding me her cakes.’ He then held up a cupcake to the camera, and said: ‘They’re not very good!’ The children then burst into laughter as the prince adds: ‘I’ve told her she wouldn’t win Bake Off.’

I can understand the children laughing, but this is just so rude. The NHS staff member made cakes with her own money for his visit and all he can do is insult them.

The only relevance of it being NHS
that it's the new version of the 'charity visit' for 'royal' PR

HoppingPavlova · 16/02/2023 08:51

Some people are professionally offended, could make a living out of it if being offended earnt $$. Suspect the OP is one of these.

I thought you were being serious at first until you suggested Harry is good with people 😂😂😂

I think for all his flaws, he actually is, if you watch any of his interactions or interviews he has a charming and easy yet earnest manner. Obviously long term he's not good at relationships but short term he has a certain charm about him

Quartz2208 · 16/02/2023 08:53

I think he tried for a joke to try and get a more modern royal family and I don’t think it hit - I think it was unfunny and a little rude but not intentional. More a dad joke that went wrong

Coxspurplepippin · 16/02/2023 08:53

'They'd be wailing and gnashing their teeth if it was Harry or Meghan who'd made the same comment though!'

Except by their fans who'd say they were so down to earth, relatable, really know how to connect with people, look how they can have a joke, be natural etc etc etc.

The people involved haven't taken offence they have plenty of daft people willing to do it on their behalf for some reason, appeared to enjoy the interaction, yet it's been blown up into an utterly ridiculous issue by who? Anti monarchists? Home bakers across the country? Harry and Meghan fans?

I guess William could revert back to 'Have you come far'? But no doubt someone will find that offensive too.

It was clearly a joke. He had been scoffing them; he loved them. The kids knew they were scumptious and that he was joking. It's called humour!

In short supply on MN

We all knew it’s becoming increasingly humourless but this thread takes the cake

See what I did there

sotired2 · 16/02/2023 09:00

I think you can tell by the tone of his voice and look on his face he was clearly having a joke with the people around him and even the lady who baked them - I really think you are reading far too much into a brief video of a much longer visit.

Monzeitia · 16/02/2023 09:03

What a misery you are, light up woman, it was a joke, you sound like a party pooper

Novella4 · 16/02/2023 09:06

Im sure he was trying to be 'himself'
But 'himself' is unpleasant and cold
Forget trying to connect with people Willy.

He would be much better served reverting to 'have you come far ' as suggested below

toomuchlaundry · 16/02/2023 09:06

If he was being mean to her would he have agreed to FaceTime her son?

That's not quite the same, is it.

Ire NHS won't forget his idiotic remarks that covid was 'just a cold'

Laughing about the media was exaggerating

Anyone with an ounce of intelligence knew by that stage that it was SARS 2 and dangerous
But just 'joke ' about it
Very funny

Monzeitia · 16/02/2023 09:11

Here they come, I wonder if one of the clan agrees with, is my turn to create a thread on here to trash William or Catherine and then the rest follow, it seems to be a theme every few weeks, I guess the South Park episode hasn’t gone too well within the Sussex supporters

BellatrixLestrangesHeatedCurlers · 16/02/2023 09:12

I hate the royal family but this was a joke to make kids laugh (and it worked). Children love that naughtiness. I actually think this is one of the rare times that William has NOT done a gaffe!

Coxspurplepippin · 16/02/2023 09:14

'I guess the South Park episode hasn’t gone too well within the Sussex supporters'.
You could be right.
But it was quite funny...........

Again - you assume that there is some organisation involved .
Why, is that how the 'royal'PR is done?

There was a thread about this a while ago. Regular posters were accused of being plants and mumsnet didn't take well to it

The royals are falling in popularity and they are scrambling to correct it .
If anything this area on mumsnet does NOT reflect the reality of the royals - they are not as liked as media would lead you to believe.

Look at the mournathon threads . Uk posters posting once ( hate them ) and gone

You beat me to it, I was just about to type the same.

Its a squirrel post.
South Park has landed and it looks like a complete mickey take.
Troops have been rounded up to throw something out about the RF and some outrage about a cake 'dad' joke was the best they could come up with.
It happens every, single time.

mostlysunnywithshowers · 16/02/2023 09:19

Er, context at all? Isn't that one of those old-fashioned humour things where you say the opposite, like when you call a supercar an 'old banger' in faux mocking of something that's actually really good?

My aussie partner has a habit of raising eyebrows by calling things 'ordinary' - it's what they say about stuff that's actually very UNordinary. Chill out!

Pirateships · 16/02/2023 09:21

Quite a few American pop culture 'icons' have ridiculed them since the release of his book, that's got to hurt them. Such a shame.

Well it was Ipswich. If William had said Delia Smith made better cakes, I can imagine that would not have gone down well there.

Oh, that would have been fighting talk! I do think that so many of the allegedly busy mothers still have time to forensically trawl the internet for something about which to be 'offended'! Must be exhausting.
Next time my grandson thrusts one of his baking efforts into my hand I must remember not to take a bite, grasp my throat and pretend to be poisoned, though he would be very disappointed.

OutofEverything · 16/02/2023 09:37

I am not a Sussex supporter.
But I do not like men who make jokes at women's expense. I know the kind of man William is just from this. The kind who will make snidy jokes about his wife and think he is being hilarious.

I thought it was a you had to be there moment ,

OP are you a regular name changer ?

Monzeitia · 16/02/2023 09:56

Why are you angry?? If the royals affect you that much, I think is time to step back and concentrate on other more important things in life, reading your post under this thread, you seriously need to light up about it, I like the Monarchy and all the traditions but I won’t lose sleep over it, neither I will get so angry if Harry for instance made the same joke but as you are talking about popularity, the last poll shows that Harry has plummeted from 70% to 23% and the favourite Royal is Prince William, so they are here to stay and I don’t think you or your children will see the end of the Monarchy but if it happens, my life with remain the same so I really can bother to get angry over it
