William being rude during public visit

William visited an Ipswich hospital. A staff member had made cakes for his visit and decorated them with union jacks.
William then took part in a video call with some children, including the sin if the woman who made the cakes, William said to the young boy: ‘Your mother’s feeding me her cakes.’ He then held up a cupcake to the camera, and said: ‘They’re not very good!’ The children then burst into laughter as the prince adds: ‘I’ve told her she wouldn’t win Bake Off.’

I can understand the children laughing, but this is just so rude. The NHS staff member made cakes with her own money for his visit and all he can do is insult them.

So if you go and visit someone and they give you home made cake, do you joke it tastes terrible?

Oh dear god, you really do need to get over yourself.
Bet it's a barrel of laughs at your gaff

SheSellSeaShells · 16/02/2023 06:55

Harry...... is that you? 😉

Ffs it really is no wonder we’re a nation riddled with anxiety and depression.
Is it a full time job now looking for offence in every bloody situation? Must be bloody exhausting!

Hear, hear
We seem to have travelled back to 1880

No it is the kind of thing kids would find hilarious - a Prince saying what they know should not be said.

Is that you, Meghan?

Christ the misery. How do you get through a normal day OP?

Quite, but to be fair to the OP I wonder that about a lot of MN posters.

It's the sort of lighthearted banter that's normal in my life. A friend once sent me a birthday card with a picture of a very grand Edwardian lady looking through a pair of opera glasses on the front. Inside it said "Oh look, one of the peasants is having a birthday!" I thought it was funny, but my mother saw it and was very insulted, wanted to know what she meant by it - but like you, she's always looking for offence.

I would have been thrilled with that interaction with Wills. Shows a more human side to the royals.

DrHousecuredme · 16/02/2023 07:04

He was trying to be funny, yes.
But if I was the baker then I'd feel a bit hurt and embarrassed in all honesty.
Of course she was laughing it off though because really what else was there to do in the circumstances?

HaveYouSeenNancy · 16/02/2023 07:06

Every time I see a picture of William it's like looking at Diana - he's the absolute image of her (more so when he wears a hat obviously). He even has the same smile.

ign0re · 16/02/2023 07:08

Christ you sound like a barrel of laughs. Are you always this much fun or only certain days of the week? Have you nothing better to do with your time than start a thread about this? Why are you so invested?

vera99 · 16/02/2023 07:09

His equally crass grandfather would have said something like "bloody good show, nice to see a great British cake rather than all that foreign muck we are forced to eat !" Cue silence then nervous laughter and a flunky indicating that it's time to get him out....

Oh crass comments it's obviously in the Royal style book.

unrsnblyannoyd · 16/02/2023 07:10

Oh takes me back to my student days. "I've baked cake, they're not very good," was code for they're bloody delicious! Usually said when we had more visitors than cake and we wanted some left over for staff 🤣

Stoic123 · 16/02/2023 07:16

Clearly a joke she was in on. A bit clumsy maybe.

I hate all the 'anti-woke' rhetoric but people getting offended at things like this really does provide ammunition.

Oh and I’m pretty sure if H&M were given those cakes they’d have made a real fuss of the lady and gone on about how fabulous the cakes were and made her feel appreciated!

Look how Meghan connected with the Grenfell kitchen ladies. She would never have treated poor cake lady like Wills did.

This would never have happened.

First, it's unlikely they would have spoken to this lovely NHS lady as she is not the kind of target they usually go for. I don't think the Union Jack and royal symbols on the cupcakes would have gone done too well either

LlynTegid · 16/02/2023 07:18

Well it was Ipswich. If William had said Delia Smith made better cakes, I can imagine that would not have gone down well there.

pilates · 16/02/2023 07:19

Oh fgs I can’t believe this thread. It’s a family joke when we eat something nice like a cake; “they’re awful you will hate it”. Probably a Sussex supporter.

Menomaddness · 16/02/2023 07:22

I'm absolutely certain it's one of those "you had to be there" moments, but at worst it was a clumsy attempt to make a child laugh.

What I find most amazing about this story is that the heir to the throne eats cakes baked by the public or were they just to look at?

weightymatters73 · 16/02/2023 07:31

What a load of tosh - anyone who has seen the clip can see the woman is happy, the son is happy and no one is upset or "grimacing"

Xol · 16/02/2023 07:36

OutofEverything · 15/02/2023 22:54

I wonder if the woman thought it was a joke to have someone visiting saying her home baked cakes tasted awful. Jokes are supposed to be funny.

Even on your own account, he didn't say they tasted awful.

Appleskypietoday · 16/02/2023 07:37

It's a joke.

ChardonnaysBeastlyCat · 16/02/2023 07:37

I am very very turned off by ghastly men abusing their power and privilege, and watching a bunch of sycophants thinking that this waste of money is so hilarious.

Grin

Bloody hell.

vera99 · 16/02/2023 07:41

If you tolerate this then your children will be next ......

FestiveAF · 16/02/2023 07:42

OutofEverything · 15/02/2023 23:07

How do you know what the woman who baked the cakes thought? She can hardly complain and chuck him out. She has no choice but to smile at work and say nothing.

And how do YOU know what the woman who baked the cakes thought?

This.

Can't deny it isn't the funniest or most original joke ever made.

But it's clearly an attempt at humour and really shouldn't be enough to ruin anyones day 🤷‍♀️

pissssedofff · 16/02/2023 07:43

I love a joke but this wasn't funny, that woman will be forever ribbed about her cakes.
TBH its quite a nasty thing to do and there was no reason for him to do so either.
Silly woman baking cakes for the future King, he doesn't give a shit about her or the NHS.

Would anyone saying its harmless like to be the subject of a joke like that in front of national TV and the local community?

William Mountbatten Windsor is too stupid to know it was rude.

Been told to engage with the youth no doubt as no one under 40 wants much do with them
Leave genuine connection with people to Harry , William. You suck at it
