If King Charles asked people not to boo the couple and did a deal with newspapers and TV to not print pictures of them or comment on their appearance, do you think they would come.

If there was a total news blackout where they were concerned (which I would just love!) so we didn't have to even see them, (apart from a passing glimpse), i think I could bear them coming. Daddy clearly want them there. Fatted calf and all that.

Would this get around the problem of them taking the spotlight away from the actual ceremony?

Do your own homework!🙂

She issued a press release about it too. Well, no point making the trip if you don’t get coverage of it, I guess.

I have not been able to find the press release except for the same statement that H&M’s press team gave to all media queries. See below. Do you have another one which is not a response to queries but a or statement?

Harry and Meghan and the coronation.
ThighMistress · 16/02/2023 19:21

But why was she there ? As others have pointed out, H&M have no standing in the US beyond being celebrities. Inserting yourself into dramas - nay, tragedies - is poor misguided behaviour, and really indicates a level of self-importance that’s something else!

Thought so - she asked people to call her Meghan so your assertion was incorrect.

She went as many private citizens went because she was moved to. You may think she shouldn’t have - but that is why she went. She won’t make this mistake again.

SirChenjins · 16/02/2023 19:26

I’m willing to bet there weren’t many private citizens there who flew the distance she did to pitch up with a bunch of flowers.

A magazine journalist said at the time they were surprised to see a press relase issued. And, as you can see below from the various publications which covered the trip they are all more or less identical in phrasing. You’ve helpfully posted yet another example above, from Buzzfeed. These publications did not see the photos of Meghan on their press feed and proactively reach out to Archewell for a comment (fashion magazines don’t do that…). They all received the same press release and simply copied and pasted it.

A spokesperson for Markle and Prince Harry told Harper’s Bazaar that the Duchess of Sussex visited 'in a personal capacity as a mother, to offer her condolences and support in person to a community experiencing unimaginable grief'.

Meghan took the trip in a "personal capacity as a mother," according to a spokesperson for the Duchess of Sussex told Town & Country, to "offer her condolences and support in person to a community experiencing unimaginable grief."

An Archewell spokesperson confirmed Meghan's visit to the memorial to USA TODAY. The spokesperson said it was important for Meghan, as a mother herself, to make the trip and extend her condolences and support to the Texas community during this difficult time.

According to a spokesperson for Meghan, she travelled to Uvalde in “a personal capacity as a mother” to offer her “condolences and support in person to a community experiencing unimaginable grief”. (that one’s from The Independent)

A spokesperson for the mom-of-two shared with HELLO! that the unannounced trip was taken by Meghan privately in order to pay her condolences and support the local community.

A spokesperson for Meghan and Prince Harry confirmed the duchess's visit on Thursday to BAZAAR.com, saying that she came "in a personal capacity as a mother, to offer her condolences and support in person to a community experiencing unimaginable grief."

Lol

I give up - please watch the video of her walking past that photographer after she had laid her flowers. Are you suggesting that she should have walked on the kneeling photographer in front of her so as not to give the impression that she noticed them there?

And no - she did not direct independent journalists to take her pictures. She really didn’t.

Normal people make mistakes - she needs to remember that people will always make the worst assumptions of the choices she makes and therefore needs to be several steps ahead. She already showed signs of learning over the funeral so I guess it was a good lesson learned.

Were you there yourself, skullbabe? You seem very certain of this.

The Sussexes do have form for this, of course. In 2020 they handed out back-to-school supplies for the Baby 2 Baby charity, and took their own photographer to shoot it. They also took a photographer to their Remembrance Day “service” at a Los Angeles cemetery. And Meghan took a photographer to take photos of her trip to Rwanda in 2016.

I see - so we are using the same statement. So - according to Buzzfeed on the day - press got in touch with the Sussex team for comment. This is the comment. Would you prefer they had said nothing? No comment? What should have been said?

Serenster · 16/02/2023 19:42

These publications didn’t get contacted for a statement, skullbabe. Meghan’s PR team proactively issued one press release in identical terms and sent it out to a media circulation list in the hope that the content creators at the various publications would pick it up, and turn it into a story. Which they duly did. And they all used the quote it included. That’s a big PR win - and what they get paid for.

(Genuinely, that is 100% how this works behind the scenes).

derxa · 16/02/2023 19:43

It's not the fact that she went to site to lay flowers that irks me. It's her arrogance that her going would provide special comfort to bereaved parents. I just don't get it.

The answer is in your own paragraph - they took their own photographer whose photographs were attributed to that photographer.

AP photographers were very much still there and were taking pictures. No photographers were reported arriving with her. No photographers are reported leaving with her - there are also no photographers walking back with her to the car on video.

But I know - it’s such an accepted part of the Meghan canon.
