If King Charles asked people not to boo the couple and did a deal with newspapers and TV to not print pictures of them or comment on their appearance, do you think they would come.

If there was a total news blackout where they were concerned (which I would just love!) so we didn't have to even see them, (apart from a passing glimpse), i think I could bear them coming. Daddy clearly want them there. Fatted calf and all that.

Would this get around the problem of them taking the spotlight away from the actual ceremony?

Neither. Did. Meghan(seriously -she really didn’t).

Oh. Yes. She. Did 🙄There were pap shots showing her private hire photographer staging shots. Otherwise, nobody would have even noticed her.

AliceOlive · 16/02/2023 17:55

@skullbabe I am also so sorry that your 12 year old had that experience. It must be the most difficult part of being a parent.

purpledalmation · 16/02/2023 18:01

I think its clear now an invitation will be given, and probably accepted. Best we can hope for is family discussions on the weather and a quick return to California.

I didn't take it as an affront to the RF for her to go to Uvalde. I took it as her not recognizing that she is not a leader or a public figure here. I think she believed that having become a member of the RF and having participated in official visits to various commonwealth countries conveyed a status on her here in the US, too. It did not. I know she expressed an interest in politics here and I think she's looking for ways to show leadership, but this was a miss.

To my knowledge, private citizens do not do this in the US. I have had numerous tragedies in my own state, and even my own town. I would never feel right rocking up to the house full of children that burned down, right after it happened and standing around. But it's less than a mile away.

The other celebrities we heard about going to Uvalde grew up there. If a friend told me they were flying to Uvalde to pay their respects without having any connection I would think they had come unhinged.

Hi @AliceOlive - I understand your point. I think the Ulvalde issues all came from me saying that regardless of what this woman does, it will be taken as an affront to the Royal Family (I mentioned breathing, dressing, looking, hand holding, smiling). All of these things have been categorised as being done to spite the RF in some way.

I will expand this to include nothing she will ever do will be seen in a neutral lens.

I’m normally a quite even tempered person but I was so upset - thank you. I’m sure they told me before having children that parenting sucks but it’s moments like these…..

There is absolutely a group that never will find anything positive to say about either of them. I have defended MM here multiple times on various points.
I have taken what I felt to be heavy fire for it, to the point of staying off MN for about a month, also, then stayed away from even reading RF.

Another group that would never admit to any misstep or wrong doing. I have had a few ugly comments lobbed my way from that side, also. Their vitriol toward anyone they perceive to be against matches the vitriol of the group above.

For me those are two sides of the same coin. I always found you to be intelligent, reasonable, kind and fair. What on earth are you doing here? 😂

For goodness sake, get real. whether she did or did not take a photographer is not even relevant. She showed up at a high profile horrific event which had nothing personal to do with her, knowing full well high resolution shots would be pinging around the world on all medias. She knew this would happen. Its was so tone deaf and insensitive it defies description. She knew she would become the centre of attention following such high profile exposure in the media, instead of grieving parents. It really isn't the done thing, but MM seems to be so desperate for fame she will hijack any event.

And the sight of her and Harry eating with army veterans and harry saluting (FFS) US solidiers on a significant day (Veterans? Rememberance?) Crass and classless. I'm embarrassed for them. They represent no one but themselves and Harry purporting to have an affinity to american veterans knowing he was going to make the remarks he did about the Taliban, ... words really fail me.

I suspect there will be a compromise similar to Andrew last year - he/they if Meghan comes will not be part of any parade and enter and leave Westminster Abbey quietly via a side entrance rather than the front to avoid any risk of booing/egg throwing, sit somewhere discreet and not have an official role in the ceremony. They will probably be on one or two official group pictures of the day published after the event but otherwise be fairly invisible.

Present, but low key.

skullbabe · 16/02/2023 17:04

Precisely my point - Meghan went to Uvalde as a private citizen and people took this as somehow being an affront to the RF.

I’m sure she was using her “Duchess” title, however. Hmmmmm…. If she’s so keen to be a private citizen why does she STILL use it? What a joke they are.

She was walking past the photographer? Are you suggesting that Meghan Markle could tell an independent AP photojournalist to stage her pictures? Really? Those people are actual journalists with actual careers - do you not think that they themselves would have mentioned that she was so vainglorious as to suggest the best framing? Would t that be a journalistic scoop? Seriously think about it.

“…but can people stop portraying the working RF as akin to a Hollywood sideshow. They are representatives of the UK State, not minor celebs trying to bandwagon a cause to raise their own profile.”

Exactly. How dare they? They are not ghastly “celebs” at all - unlike the ex-working Royals who actually want to be “celebs”. How utterly crass. No other member of the RF would vie for that tacky prize.

She pays well. She absolutely does such awful things. Ugh

Serenster · 16/02/2023 19:00

She issued a press release about it too. Well, no point making the trip if you don’t get coverage of it, I guess.

Sigh - now you change tack. So she didn’t
take photographers - I think you accept that.

Your issue is now that she just shouldn’t have gone in the first place because she knew she’d be photographed. Fine - it’s a lesson I’m sure she’s learned.

And changing tack again - Harry and Meghan - checking notes - eating with veterans on Veterans Day (I mean Harry is a veteran who has admitted to killing Taliban fighters which many of them will have done as well - but him admitting to it will upset them for some reason - unlike the other veterans who have written about and talked about the Taliban fighters they’ve killed). Not sure how they forced these Veterens (or more pertinently their chain of command) to break bread with them - dastardly shenanigans on their part I’m sure.

onlylarkin · 16/02/2023 19:05

I am trying to get caught up. But here is some information.

California (Meghan's home state) is hundreds of miles from Texas, which is where Uvalde is. For reference, here is the entire of the UK in comparison to just the state of Texas. I only post this because I do not think people not from the US really understands the size of the US. The US is not our "home state". It is our country. And when you are here and someone asks you where you are from, you tell them your home state, not your country. (Driving across the state of Texas is like some special kind of hell because you just keep going and are hopeful to get to the state line but then realize, NOPE, still in Texas. I do recommend though, that is you find yourself in the vast nothingness of Texas, you make a stop in Dumas "Home of the Ding Dong Daddies!" Nothing special there, except a nice Dairy Queen, but seeing the sign is enough to giggle. 😅)

Spare is still on the NYT best seller list for the 5th week in a row. People are still buying it in the US in large numbers.

The media WILL have been at the school site for weeks afterwards. Not just days. Just like they would in a natural disaster. I have no idea if she staged photos. To be frank, most people don't care if they were staged or not. Her photos were likely to not cause anything other than a glance and a shrug from most of the public at the time.

It is normal in the US for celebs to use their profile to raise money for causes. That is normal. More normal even, than a politician raising money for charity. I am sure it happens, but I cant remember when. They are to busy trying to impeach presidents.

I wonder when the people of the UK will finally accept that what happens in the US is nothing like what happens in the UK and stop comparing what H & M do in the US to how things happen in the UK. It is like comparing apples to oranges. .

Harry and Meghan and the coronation.
LoveMAFS · 16/02/2023 19:06

I think it'd be terrible if Harry didn't witness his father's coronation. That said, I don't really want to see him or Meghan. We'd only hear it regurgitated back to us later on in the next moaning session.

Tell me how did she use it. Did she walk up to them and say - “Hi I’m Duchess of Sussex”.
