Brave man. Painfully transparent and authentic. At last..
Someone that tells it like it is. Refreshing at least and if even 50% of people that read Spare now looks at press articles cynically then that's a result ! I am excited to see change - we need it .
What do you think ?

Tbf, I’ve always thought William and Catherine seemed incredibly superior and as cold as ice, whilst Charles was the epitome of loving but absolutely inept at showing it. Harry just confirmed my thoughts.

I see Kate and William as the grown ups, compared to the rather childish Harry. Why superior? Why cold as ice? Just because they haven't blurted their lives all over the place?

JoonT · 24/01/2023 22:41

The majority of the population have always regarded the royals as a joke. Google the anti-monarchy cartoons from the regency period (Gillray, for example). Even in the 1820s the monarch was being mocked, often in shocking ways. My grandparents and great grandparents were loyal, patriotic, white working class Brits. Both my grandfathers were in the forces in WW2 and my great grandfather was twice wounded in WW1. Yet none of them had the slightest interest in, or affection for, the royals.

I just wonder if you think he is a money grabbing, attention seeking lying prick - who are your sources? The media .....?

Who needs the media when he has laid it out so clearly in the book?

This reminds me of Private Eye taking the piss out of those feeling sympathy for Harry, "forced to live a life of immense privilege that wasn't always exactly to his liking".

Yes indeed, my views of him are based on the book he has written, and the words he has spoken in interviews and on Netflix.

His own words.

Odd when polls show the majority in favour of a monarchy.

'The majority of the population have always regarded the royals as a joke....... Even in the 1820s the monarch was being mocked'

Yet 200 years later, they're still here.

Same way we all form opinions of those we don’t actually know … it’s not based on any true reality, more it’s a vibe.

I’ve just always found William to be going through the motions. I accept this is my interpretation, but he has a light work load compared to other Royals and I still sense he resents the job. Really, he’d love to be a Trustafarian like his mates - all the money, all the status, none of the work. I know a good few old Etonians who have more than one large property in the UK and abroad, staff and funds. They ‘work’ on their estates and have a lovely time heading into the City once a month to visit their mistress club.

I’ve always been torn on Catherine - I get the need for her to be the absolute opposite of Diana but that is the Institutions need. The family business ruling the actual family (Harry’s main complaint).

I find her so bland. She’s either so ‘eyes on the prize’ that she’ll accept anything, including putting all of her needs and personality second, or shes so totally devoid of personality or agency that she’ll accept it. Neither of these are traits I find attractive.

I get that some may say she loves William so much that she’s prepared to (and has become brilliant at) subverting her needs but again, that’s not a trait I would encourage in a daughter or similar.

@YellowAndGreenToBeSeen ‘Really, he’d love to be a Trustafarian like his mates - all the money, all the status, none of the work.’ What, exactly like Harry then? Lol

Sure! Isn’t that part of the sinking rivalry?!

YellowAndGreenToBeSeen · 24/01/2023 23:15

Sibling!! Damn ac…

Coxspurplepippin · 24/01/2023 23:16

But that doesn't make them 'cold'. I see Kate as full of common sense, cheerful, down to earth, no pretensions, understands the job, realises it's not all about her. Not bland at all, just because she doesn't emote all over the place doesn't mean she doesn't have opinions and feelings.

There have been a few posts across the boards from people who've met William who see him as the 'designated driver' (the term a poster actually used) - somewhat reigning in the more effusive, exhuberant 'hooray' types, again, recognising the duty. He may resent the job, but appears to have a strong sense of duty. His workload will probably ramp up considerably now, and of course we only see the public facing workload anyway.

We're so used to celebrity culture that anyone in the public eye who is a bit reserved appears, what? Bland? Boring? I think that's a bit of a sad indictment of our society tbh.

What has sibling rivalry to do with your point about William though? Living like a trustafarian - on inherited money and trading on his family name- is exactly what harry is continuing to do? I’m no monarchist but at least william is still turning up to do the boring bits likes open community centres

Oh, my goodness me, yes! And politicians have to have “charisma” instead of being honest and decent and intelligent.

flabbygoldfish · 24/01/2023 23:22

I see a man child with significant mummy issues and a selective memory who has perhaps overdone the therapy. Meghan is just a failed actress who is hoping her husband's status will help her kick start a second career.

Not overly inspired by Kate and William but they are perfectly made for their roles. I have a bit more time for the more minor royals (except Andrew) who get on with the job alongside real life and don't moan about it.

YellowAndGreenToBeSeen · 24/01/2023 23:30

I hear ya. But your ‘common sense, cheerful, down to earth’ I see as deeply dull. I also think they are sneering of the ‘common people’. Tolerating in order to reap the benefits. Patronising.

Got no proof other than I know someone who is relatively close to the RF. He knows he’s called ‘the chef’ despite being an ‘old family’. All because he works for a living. It’s said in jest. Except it’s really not.

Its this ‘I do it because I have to in order to have the fuck off houses and staff’ attitude I find tricky.

I do admit, I like my ‘celebs’ to be crazy and extra! Diana, Margaret were good at this. But not as good as Streisand or Minnelli! Now they knew how to be a Star!

Sorry - catching up..,

but he seems to hates us for it. He seems to despise the role but yet hasn’t the balls to walk away.

Celinia · 24/01/2023 23:50

Harry’s preaching to many converts. Some of us are old enough to remember Diana and Charles‘ failing marriage/divorce; Morton’s book on Diana; and Diana’s untimely death. I’m still amazed that any outsider would want to marry into royalty: it must be like living in an overcrowded, distorted goldfish bowl.

No they haven’t. And still don’t. Any politician would kill for their approval rating.

As I say not a monarchist but to my shame enthusiastic consumer of celeb gos (despite not being a total moron), genuinely no idea where you get that idea from about William. Does not chime with anything I’ve ever seen about the man. Sounds to me like you’ve devised an idea (from dear old Harold) and sought to pin it on Wills.

Thanks for clarifying. All you’ve done is chuck accusations without any reason for them. I’m an anti monarchist, but I just don’t get this

Well, Harrys proven how he behaves towards his ‘lessees’ in his book, so you’ve definitely got a point there.

Staff sobbing at their desks, him slapping his protection officers, and using them as lackeys to go and get him Nandos.

YellowAndGreenToBeSeen · 25/01/2023 00:39

Oh. Ok.

I don’t feel like I ‘chucked accusations’. I thought I was quite explicit in my mixed feelings towards all POV of the RF. Gosh.

I thought I’d been too explicit in my feelings in my post between 23.:00 and beyond. But I guess not.

For clarity: mixed, familiar, sad, loving, complex, no one person is right…

Yes but you haven’t pointed to any basis for those feelings. You are presenting an idea that William hates his life - which is pretty extreme. Personally I’d be unwilling to say that about anyone unless I could point to something more tangiable, especially someone I don’t actually know
