Shocked to see in this mornings Telegraph that Harry is concerned for the other "spares" He just wants to break the bad parenting pattern and stop it happening to Charlotte or George. If I was W&K I would be absolutely LIVID by now. What does anyone else think?

I have but internet forums are not totally representative of the constituency at large. Tend to be populated by know it all malcontents with too much time on their hands (looks in mirror!). Indeed friends and family who know I post online roll their eyes and think it weird and time wasting behavior as does my partner who thinks it most odd !

What about all the lurkers? My bloke doesn’t post on ARRSE but he regularly reads it. He and his fellow vets are just as scathing.

vera99 · 20/01/2023 16:24

Yup I think we tend to project our own biases onto this particular crystal ball. Time will tell but the Colbert interview and audience reaction took me totally by surprise as I thought Harry could crumble with a live audience when the others had been filmed and carefully choreographed set pieces. He did the exact opposite stormed the inetrview and charmed both Colbert and the audience and indeed me.

Look, I am saying this as a woman of South Asian heritage. Those markets - as far as clothes, make up etc are concerned - are skewed towards using blonde, blue eyed young starlets or Bollywood stars. Not middle aged African American women. Call it racist - I have no doubts that it is. But aspirational in Asia is the paler and more Westernised the better.

I'd say age is against her too. 41 is by no means old but the beauty industry is notoriously ageist.

Anyway is 'Asia' the new El Dorado for embittered ex royals? We were told that they would be huge in America and that it was only the jealous Brits who didn't like them. Time to shift gears. Now they are going to be Big In Japan?

Fair enough he can't win them all. For those that want another rabbit hole to go down here its is.

I don't think they have a strategy. I think their own hatred for the RF has skewed their reality to how much it is beloved and respected (and has managed to ride many a wave of bad press/polls). Neither of them are clever enough to understand when enough is enough, where to draw lines and boundaries, when to hold things back. They have no self awareness or sense of how ridiculous they sound. They just blame the press for negativity and do not give any credit to the general public's ability to listen to, e.g., those terrible Archtypes podcasts, and come to their own conclusions. Meghan has never been a Hollywood elite, she does not understand that she has burned bridges by being a tell tale. She's also an arriviste with no acting pedigree, and no chance of reviving an acting career at her age. Harry is just dim and mired in therapy and drug use that is clearly not helping them. They are lost. It is terribly sad.

It wasn’t the usual live audience though - the Harry segment was filmed in advance before the rest of the show was taped, and in front of a carefully vetted “audience” of Harry’s fans only. For security reasons, apparently. So no real surprise he charmed the audience….

The people who knew he was due to appear on the Colbert show and so had queued up for places in the studio audience for the taping of the rest of the show didn’t know he wouldn’t actually be there. They spoke out about being annoyed they didn’t get to see him.

Yes that’s why I said if they change their tactics & get decent advisors. You could be right & maybe they don’t want to be rehabilitated. Maybe they prefer being professional victims which they seem to have nailed imo.

I just read that a Newsweek poll said even Americans think they should lose their titles. I don’t know how they can recover. If they are not successful, they will become more embittered and angrier. It would have been to the benefit of the royal family if they’d been a success in the US.

I think they massively overestimated their own importance and it never occurred to them that 'half in half out' would be rejected. Even though pretty much any of us here could have told them it would have to be. Then they flounced off and their only 'strategy' seemed to be becoming 'American royals'. But again as any of us here could have told them, that's not really a 'thing'. So here we are.

sayitwithcolors · 20/01/2023 16:40

Totally agree, it was effortless!

Ohnonevermind · 20/01/2023 16:42

Harry and Meghan are the poor relations - estimated net worth of her VIP guests at her wedding
Oprah 2.5bn
George clooney 500m
Serena Williams 250m
David Foster (2nd father) 150m

That spin has been rehashed on numerous sites- where do you get that it was a selected audience of fans only rather than a change to the established protocol. Nut jobs are out denying the audience even existed....

I find the notion of "going to Asia" a bit racist in itself, really. As if Asians are too dumb to understand what has gone on these last 3 years, and will just buy anything off this pair. Rejected by the West? Don't worry, the stupid brown people don't use the internet, they'll have you.

sayitwithcolors · 20/01/2023 16:49

Fair point, but the 'listening' public is getting their information from sources that hate them - the press! So it's not objective. As for I'm concerned, it's a bunch of made up stories, until I hear from the 'horses' themselves.

In terms of their longevity, only time will tell.

Ridemeginger · 20/01/2023 16:53

The "listening public" can listen to Archtypes and hear the absurdity.
The " listening public" can listen to Spare, and hear the envy, resentment, nastiness, misogyny and puerility.
The "listening public" can hear them backtrack on an extremely damaging racism claim, made against the RF on a prime time Oprah special beamed around the world direct to viewers.
The "listening public" doesn't need the press to interpret what they can hear with their own ears.

Very true.

So the Brits and now the Yanks see through your crap? Never mind, the 'Asians' will just lap up whatever rubbish any posh white guy is selling.

I suppose Peter Phillips and his selling milk to China shenanigans aren't looking so desperate now?

@IcedPurple is there a chance Charles will renegotiate ‘half in, half out’ now Queen deceased & to keep peace?

@Ohnonevermind can H & M make in the region of 150 million do you think?

I’m obviously not either of those posters but the answer to both your questions is no, not in a million years.

None whatsoever.

In his very first speech as King, Charles wished Harry and Meghan well 'in their life overseas'. That was a diplomatic way of shutting the door in their faces.

Peverellshire · 20/01/2023 17:03

If Charles was desperate to keep peace, wouldn’t he backtrack? Desperate times, desperate measures & there’s an element of keeping close/some control? Possibly he/some were in agreement but Queen overruled? Why did H & M earlier almost assume a done deal?

What are the PA approximate running costs of home/life?

What makes you think he's 'desperate'?

The big 'truth bombs' of The Book and the 'documentary' have been and gone. They resulted in plumetting popularity figures for the Harkles on both sides of the Atlantic. Any threats they may theoretically have posed to the monarchy have faded. Yes, the royals have a 'staffing problem' at the moment with an absence of younger working royals, but the Harkles are clearly unsuited to royal life. The past 3 years have shown that 'half in half out' would have been a complete disaster.

Serenster · 20/01/2023 17:07

Where do you get that it was a selected audience of fans only rather than a change to the established protocol.

It was reported in the Daily Mail. But since you’ll doubtless turn your nose up about that, it’s fairly easy to establish his segment was pre-recorded. So they were right about that.

The Stephen Colbert show with Prince Harry on it was screened in the US on Tuesday 10 January. It is taped in the Ed Sullivan theatre in New York, which is 5 hours behind UK time. It is filmed between 5pm - 7pm on the night that the show airs (all of this information is a viable on the actual site for the show, which has information for people who want to come and see it.

That means that the show that featured Prince Harry was recorded starting from 10pm UK time on Tuesday 10 January. There are plenty of photos out there on twitter showing Harry arriving at the Ed Sullivan theatre (with a bodyguard carrying a “Glock Box”) that were taken on Monday 9 January.

(The “had to be pre-taped for security reasons” is bogus too - Obama appeared at the Colbert live taping when he was a sitting president!)
