Harry just protecting the other "spares"

Shocked to see in this mornings Telegraph that Harry is concerned for the other "spares" He just wants to break the bad parenting pattern and stop it happening to Charlotte or George. If I was W&K I would be absolutely LIVID by now. What does anyone else think?

The late queen's father was initially the "spare" and only came to the throne when his elder brother abdicated. George had no wish to be king and regarded the prospect with horror. On balance I think the "spare" has more chance to carve their own destiny - even Harry apparently told his brother that unlike him he could do as he wanted.

Exactly which of those skills are needed for being King?

It's pretty much agreed that Elizabeth II was a very capable monarch. How would she have done on that assault course?

Bring back the Krypton Factor!

(but leave ‘It’s a Royal Knockout’ in the vault!)

The Krypton Factor was hard! Harry would have no chance. A game of Dobble maybe....

My abiding memory of It's A Royal Knockout is Pamela Stevenson calling Meatloaf "Meaty". "Come on, Meaty!" . "You can do it, Meaty!" Cringe, cringe cringe!

MissMarpleRocks · 19/01/2023 21:07

I think I spent the majority of Its A Royal Knockout behind a cushion. Completely cringy.

I’d completely forgotten that Rowan Atkinson hosted as Tudor Blackadder!

Bjarnum · 19/01/2023 21:30

And then I'll when Edward asked the press what they thought and didn't get the resonance he wanted ... A whole new level of cringes

Ridemeginger · 19/01/2023 21:34

Oh god, horror flashbacks! Princess Anne looks so uncomfortable! Didn't Stuart Hall get done for sex offences?

MarshaMelrose · 19/01/2023 21:42

I felt sorry for Edward. He worked hard at it. It had high viewing figures. It raised £1.5m for charity which was a lot of money in 1987. How deflating when it's mocked afterwards, and I don't even know why. It's not like anyone showed their todger or cried because their necklace broke.

Ridemeginger · 19/01/2023 21:55

It was the mid 80s. I don't think the public and media were prepared to see the Royals acting with so little decorum (even in jest, for charity). Obviously all the Charles and Diana tell-all fall out was yet to come, and shatter the image of perfect royalty.

I keep seeing this particular clip being posted.

Really dragging the bottom of the barrel trying to pimp up Harry. It's pointless frankly.

I'm quite sure William could do that assault course too if he wanted to. He played polo & water polo & rugby for years. He was a search & Rescue and then Air Ambulance pilot for many years - he's not exactly scared.

They both went through Sandhurst. I don’t imagine it was a walk in the park for either of them.

DaughterOfPsychiatrist · 19/01/2023 22:17

I just laughed so hard at Aled Jones’ blue tights I woke the dog.

Yes, in hindsight, It’s A Royal Knockout is not nearly as bad as many of the things we’ve been forced to witnessed on TV since - but 87 was a full 13 years before Big Brother and the birth of reality tv. Royal Knockout is actually quite sweet if you don’t think about all the alleged sex offenders (italics for legal disclaimer reasons!) and raised a phenomenal amount for charity.

Chuckling to myself at the thought that Harry would be better suited to Gladiators than The Krypton Factor

Ohnonevermind · 19/01/2023 22:19

Meghan’s recent appearance on Ellen was an another cringefest.

vera99 · 20/01/2023 03:21

Latest You Gov poll puts KC's rating just over 50% when QE2 had well over 80%. Therein lies the HUGE problem for the monarchy - indifference/hostility from a significant proportion of the British population who don't buy into the concept. This shennigans can't all be put at H&Ms door - it was a long time brewing from the life that they have lived particular in the shadow of a pretty blameless monarch that ruled for 70 years. I imagine the stats when you breakdown the under 40s where they really need to make an impact are even worse. Either BP gets ahead of the game and quick (suggestion trimmed down Coronation and KC foots the bill) and the Wales work their socks off and sharpish with real passion and engagement of it will quickly wither on the vine.

mixedrecycling · 20/01/2023 07:01

QE2 had 'well over' 80% popularity towards the end of her life - there were times when it was well below that...

MrsHarrisgoestoTimbuctoo · 20/01/2023 07:11

@Ohnonevermind Meghan’s recent appearance on Ellen was an another cringefest.

Aren't they next door neighbours?

vera99 · 20/01/2023 08:01

I thought I would give it a watch -sorry I laughed. When Harry and Meghan do double talk shows which they undoubtedly will in the future they will smash it States wide.

Ohnonevermind · 20/01/2023 08:34

@vera99

most people were laughing at her not with her 😀

Ohnonevermind · 20/01/2023 08:35

‘Smash it’ 🤣🤣🤣🤣

Doesn’t look that way at the moment.

Sky.com.au is a right wing spin off of Sky that punts anti-vax , climate change denial and the like. I would take what they say with a pinch of salt and if there is a grain of it it will be spun out of all proportion. Anyway they are not standing for election if they have 100% brand recognition but only 25% approval that's in Kardashian territory and therefore hugely monetizable.

DaughterOfPsychiatrist · 20/01/2023 12:16

Phew! As long as the Harkles are ‘highly monetizable like the Kardashians’, they should be happy, right?

After all, that’s what they left the UK for, right, ‘to working to become financially independent’.

(As an aside, my phone does not like ‘monetizable’ - are you sure that’s a real word?)

Ah, those heady days when Harry thought he could have and do whatever he wanted.

DaughterOfPsychiatrist · 20/01/2023 13:29

I was surprised it was still up to screenshot, tbh!

The SussexRoyal Instagram seems to be preserved in mothballs (last post March 2020, so early Covid era).
