So Hazza laments that he “almost never carried money, never owned a car, never carried a house key, never once ordered anything online, never received a single box from Amazon, almost never travelled on the Underground” etc etc

Which got me to wondering what other everyday pleasures he’s missed out on - off the top of my head the list could include:

  • lost an afternoon on hold to a call centre
  • attempted to give stuff away on Freecycle/FB
  • tracked down the doorstep in the photo where your parcel’s been delivered
  • been on a rail replacement bus service
  • tried to cancel a gym membership

Any more? (lighthearted, of course)

It seems he never cooked a meal either. He seems to have spent his life eating takeaways over the sink or receiving vacuum packed meals from his father's chef. Why didn't he ever cook for himself like a normal person?

I think this is the least surprising revelation. There are loads of men that live like this if they can afford to. At least he has the excuse that nobody in his family ever really had to cook either. They only did it for fun.

Paid his way in life

Studied for professional exams whilst working 60-70 hours a week, and paying out of his own pocket to sit said exams and do any revision courses prior to them

Arrived home after exhausting work shift to find there isn’t fresh milk with which to have a cup of tea

Had to figure out a solution to the problem of having bag stolen with phone, keys and wallet in it, meaning he was unable to get into his house, phone anyone for assistance or pay for a locksmith

Cater for unexpected guests

Defer dental treatment until he could afford it

Crash his car while driving home exhausted from an entire weekend working on-site in an extremely busy job with no protected break time

Dealt with the legal ramifications of someone else not doing their job properly yet it somehow becoming his problem

Claim a refund from the train operators because his train has been delayed.

Queued in the freezing pissing rain in the taxi rank, clutching a pizza box and hoping the drunks further down don't start fighting.

To be fair, I've never done that either! Think I must have led a sheltered life!

PetitPorpoise · 15/01/2023 09:39

@DelphiniumBlue I don't miss it!

Worried he's be late for work because the Piccadilly line service to Rayner's Lane had another breakdown.

Scrabbled around for the correct change for the milkman

Had to hold his keys in his hand like a knuckle duster doing the 10 minute walk from the tube to his front door at 11 pm.

He still found a way to whine about it though.

It's funny actually, I was painting a bedroom wall once and feeling quite satisfied with my work and it occured to me that Princess Diana would never have had the simple satisfaction of doing something mundane for herself and how it's the little, totally unremarkable things in life that add up to make it a content one.

To be fair to Diana, she enjoyed doing mundane household things - possibly because she'd never had to do them - she used to clean the flats of her friends for £1 an hour as a way of passing the time.

The late Queen also very much struck me as the sort of person who washed up after herself.
