I could perhaps imagine Harry relating this anecdote in a kind of blokey way, in the sessions withi the ghost writer. But how could he not see how incredibly bad this makes him look? ...

I can think of only two options here: either he really doesn't understand how he'd appear, or he understands but doesn't care
