In the Telegraph today got to be worth a thread of its own. She is of course right !

OP posts:
creamcoffee · 08/01/2023 09:32

i dont want to discuss state of nhs, poverty etc, i want light relief!

oviraptor21 · 08/01/2023 09:33

theDudesmummy · 08/01/2023 09:00

I have not rtft but read the transcript of the article. Does it really say "cis [heterosexual] women" ?????

The square brackets indicates an editorial addition, not what Justine said. A bad and incorrect addition as it happens.
I'm disappointed that Justine used the word cis though.

SetPhasersTaeMalkie · 08/01/2023 09:35

She is right. It's very strange. I'm actually pleased that Justine has acknowledged it.

Yeh if that’s all people want to talk about that’s up to them

Topics make it easy to hide what you don’t want to see

Mezmer · 08/01/2023 09:36

creamcoffee · 08/01/2023 09:25

she is quoted as saying 90% is very supportive

how is she showing contempt?

Why does it need to be supportive? Why shouldn’t it be challenging and provoking.

I don’t come on MN for support, or rarely I do.

I like a good political debate. It helps me set my political and moral compass and makes me reflect on what I deem to believe.

in fact it’s helped me shape who I am. That’s amazing.

MN can be savage. That’s the beauty of it.

I actually think these threads have taken off in part because people are desperate for light relief and to have a break from the misery of the NHS, cost of living, Ukraine etc, after three years of Covid too.

I think after the Netflix snorefest people thought the book would be in the same vein but no one could have anticipated Harry talking about his frostbitten knob, and managing to piss of the Taliban. The Windsors seems tame in comparison.

Agree, it's like the Daily Mail comment section these days.

Swissmountains · 08/01/2023 09:40

I thought the 'CIS' comment was more worthy of a Hmm

Minimalme · 08/01/2023 09:42

She is being unfair. Harry and Megan generally get a derogatory mention together.

Is she ok with the criticism Harry gets, when 95% of his complaints are about the way Megan was treated?

Or is that ok because he is white, male, rich and privileged?

ChardonnaysBeastlyCat · 08/01/2023 09:43

ManyNameChanges · 08/01/2023 09:31

She is right.

If you look at the threads in Trending it was all about MM etc…
Have you ever seen that level of concentrated attention on anything else (bar covid during the first lockdown)?

Nope
Not for the NHS and the people dying for lack of care
Not for the amount if food banks and the people using them
Not the amount of children living in poverty
Not for our liberties getting decimated
Not for the cost if living and energy companies making millions out of tax payers money

Not for anything that really matters for our day to day life but fir gossiping on a book they haven’t read.
So they are actually NOT in a place if commenting on.

And that's exactly why the book threads happened.

There's so much bleak reality posters can take until they need a frost bitten seal singing todger and that todger came at exactly the right time. If you excuse the sun.

CurrentHun · 08/01/2023 09:44

I could have written your post Mezmer totally agree.

ChardonnaysBeastlyCat · 08/01/2023 09:45

pun

creamcoffee · 08/01/2023 09:19

well she has to say that
these are not her opinions

Then what are her opinions?

LadyKenya · 08/01/2023 09:48

Good, I am glad that Justine has spoken out about this. She is right. It is a pity that the royal family did not do the same. They may not be in the situation that they are in, if they had.

x2boys · 08/01/2023 09:51

Snippedasababy · 08/01/2023 08:10

It makes no sense. There is no Harry and Meghan topic is there?

and The royal family section has been around for ages. Pre Meghan.

It’s odd that she calls groups all people posting about Meghan as ‘deranged’. So the pro Meghan and people who are just in between, are also deranged in her opinion? Anyone talking about it all?

I wonder what she would like people to discuss? Surely she could just ban all discussion on H&M if she really thinks it’s deranged. I am guessing she won’t. She is happy with ‘deranged posters’ as long as money is coming in.

Also sounds like she doesn’t have much to do with the site anymore, if she thinks the RF board was created just for H&M discussions.

The royal family topic may as well.be the Harry &Meghan topic though.

kirinm · 08/01/2023 09:51

She's right although she / her moderators allow the nastiness.

CurrentHun · 08/01/2023 09:51

Also not so sure that running a massively successful website- while a great insight into the diversity of opinion of those who post on it (and into what content moderators remove) specifically qualifies for a political career as the article seems to suggest.

i mean maybe that’s a stupid comment on my part- obviously people get elected on way less commercial and life experience- but candidates’ political visions are needed and they aren’t the same as knowing what is being posted on a site. What is Justine’s vision?

LadyWithLapdog · 08/01/2023 09:51

@vera99 thanks for the article. JR seems very in tune with the boards on here; I agree with her.

I agree - it’s been years of abject misery, and as we go into 2023 worrying about how the hell we’ll earn a living if we can’t get to work because of rail strikes or how we’ll pay the gas bill it’s actually quite nice to have a place where we can laugh at people singing at seals and having their arses spanked. IMO.

According to the article “Mumsnet’s spokesman, Roberts has become the de-facto voice of all women. Tall, in an on-brand Mumsnet blue jumper and jeans, she radiates energy and has her finger on the pulse of what the country thinks”. We’ll MN is posting quite prolifically about H&M and many in the country have lots of varying views on the pair of them - so has the article got it wrong about Justine, or is she only the voice of all women when they’re agreeing with her?

TimezoneYawn · 08/01/2023 08:50

The BRF attracts a lot of attention, now and in the past. People were interested in Diana because she was going to be Queen of the most high profile monarchy one day, not because of her 'inherent star qualities' whatever that would be. The fact that she was pretty and photogenic obviously contributed to the interest. With Megan, people are interested because harry was one of the most eligible bachelors in the world and there had already been lots of attention on harry and his previous girlfriends (who were smart enough to get away). The attention was there purely because of Harry being a British royal prince. Megan did cause ripples because she's American, an actress, older and divorced and probably with the press also because she's mixed race although she passes as white in her public person and how she presents herself. The press did have a field day, taht's tabloids for you, they were pretty horrible and taunting about Chelsea as well. Since Megxit we can judge H&M for ourselves and many find that they come across as insincere, untrustworthy and full of themselves. Megan does cut a good figure on photos and film but what comes out of her mouth is not impressive. With the OW interview, the NF series and Harry's book, they have lashed out and insulted and hurt many people in Harry's family and beyond. We don't need the tabloid to tell us this, we're getting all this nasty stuff first hand from them. Harry has sold his heritage and soul to the highest bidder. I do hope this is all going to calm down so that we can move on from this opportunistic and entitled duo. They are not the stars they think they are.

One hundred percent with you, time zone. I object strongly to this reductive lumping together of anyone who questions HandM’s actions. We are all apparently “Meghan-haters”

A much more accurate label for many of us is “HandM-doubters”.

Wow cakeism at its finest

She is running a business. These articles are just part of the marketing strategy

Forthelast · 08/01/2023 10:07

It was in poor taste to compare this story to Madeline McCann in any way.

It's not the story that's comparable, it's the response of some Mumsnetters that she is comparing. It's the obsessive analysis of every single thing.

Morestrangethings · 08/01/2023 10:16

She said ‘vitriolic’ and ‘seems slightly deranged’

i wouldn’t disagree with that.

————————————————————————————————-

And I agree with Lady Kenya, if the RF had spoken out when they should have they probably wouldn’t be in this situation.

I don’t read Reddit etc but surely it’s the same on many other platforms

It’s just the way of SM. Given Justine is in the business of SM seems strange to see in a bad light, it’s driving her profit, and if she doesn’t want it it’s her site - make a decision on that
