Tiara-gate unveiled (shameless pun)

The fact that meghan said, and Harry believed, she had spent “hours and hours” with dressmakers getting the original scalloped tiara to match the scallop veil edge shows, IMO, one of two things:

  1. meghan is a wild exaggerator and Harry is stupid. I had a high end dress custom made for my wedding. For this type of thing she would just need to hand over to the extremely experienced professionals. Meghan would have no input to this.
  2. meghan is an enormous control freak who stood over them for hours to make sure it was perfect

Harry trying to paint this unbelievably first world issue as arduous is yet another example of how ludicrously out of touch with reality she is. Poor Meghan, she went with another diamond tiara and hours of her time were wasted. I mean she had to take off time from her busy schedule of borrowing lipglosses and battling Willy’s finger to boss dressmakers around.

there is also an amusing quote somewhere about how Harry reassured Charles Meghan would not be a large cost addition for him as she “makes her own clothes”. Did she borrow her entire character from Snow White? Seal singing, dress making?

I'm still Hmm over the making her own clothes statement.

Those Givenchy and Dior frocks aren't going to be replaced by Simplicity Easy Fit anytime soon.

This thread is from last autumn, but is worth a read

Btw to the people questioning the poster who said a veil for a 2nd wedding is crass - that’s what the Queen thought too! Harry had to talk her into it.

and wedding two (seems to have been just the one outfit for both civil ceremony and church blessing).

She married Tim Laurence at Crathie Kirk, near Balmoral.

Maireas · 07/01/2023 20:57

The veil, though! The most elaborate ever for a royal bride.
All the flowers of the Commonwealth hand embroidered onto it. An absolute work of art.

DuchessOfPort · 07/01/2023 20:58

SUCH a beautiful veil. The veil and the tiara were gorgeous. I wasn’t so keen on the dress but liked the idea of it.

CoffeandTiaMaria · 07/01/2023 21:00

I reckon she thought she’d wear this one.

It didn’t fit.

Tbh the wedding dress and bridesmaids dresses weren’t a good advert for Givenchy and their tailoring

The Spencer tiara has most recently been worn by Sarah and Jane's daughters on their wedding days.
I think tiaras are loaned by the owners to whom they wish.

I think only Celia (Sarah's youngest daughter) has worn it.

Fergie was a lovely bride. What a shame how it worked out.

I would not be surprised if she and Andrew quietly remarry now.

WinnieFosterReads · 07/01/2023 21:04

I wonder if the two stories got amalgamated by whoever leaked it originally ie M changed her mind about having the Spencer tiara and the confusion over the hair appointment - and somehow it became there was an argument about choosing which tiara.
I'm surprised M opted for a tiara from the Queen rather than the one with a link to Diana. Although I do think the tiara she chose was beautiful and the best part of her wedding attire. But I do love a tiara. I wonder if I ever marry a royal if they'd be ok with me wearing my little tiara I bought from a local shop when I got married.

Kwiksew! 🤣

The Spencer tiara can clearly be loaned to non-Spencer women if the Earl wants to loan it - one of his wives (Victoria Lockwood) wore it.

Harry’s page boy hat was a bold look and no mistake!

I hope we do see Princess Charlotte in it someday, even if it’s just a one off at the Spencer families discretion.

i have deffo been lulled into inaccurate understanding by the rhyme!

It really annoys me for some reason, so I just have to correct people and always end up sounding like a dick. Glad you appreciated it though!

Can I just check wrt tiaras? According to Harry, Meghan wanted to wear the Spencer tiara and spent hours with designers making the veil match. Then the Queen begged Meghan to wear one of hers and so M complied, presumably then needing to spend yet more time making the veil match the new tiara. And Angela Kelly was “obstructive” about loaning the tiara making it difficult for Meghan to do the matching exercise. But he doesn’t say what he means by “obstructive”?

Even if true, it seems like a tiny thing to have a strop about tbh. Surely Harry could have had a calm word with his grandmother about “obstructive” Angela and it would have been sorted. But I suppose brides have a tendency to overreact about things which don’t really matter, and Harry certainly isn’t one to help calm any situation.

The historical inconsistency in relation to the origin of the CoE and Henry the 8th didn’t seem to come into it!

It isn’t inconsistent because Henry 8th didn’t divorce Catherine of Aragon (or Anne of Cleaves for that matter). He separated from the Roman church because the Pope refused to issue an annulment, and made himself head of the church so he could issue the annulment himself. Divorce and annulment are different things, and often confused wrt Henry 8th. I blame the rhyme.

I’m so glad I opened this thread. I am none the wiser about what actually happened with Meghan’s tiara, but my tiara general knowledge has certainly increased!

Thank you for this post about 'that rhyme'!

Annulled
Murdered
Died
Annulled
Murdered
Survived (just)

is more accurate IMO.

KatesLipGloss · 07/01/2023 21:11

Here’s Anne. Wedding one to Captain Mark, very 70s! Look at THOSE SLEEVES!

Look also at the construction of them - they hold their shape on that amazing downwards swoop because of the inner construction. Which was based on a rugby ball

JemimaTiggywinkles · 07/01/2023 21:13

That’s a much better rhyme! I actually think Katherine Howard was a bit like Diana. Married far too young to a much older, spoilt brat of a royal, he had affairs, she (probably) did too, she got all the blame because royal men are allowed affairs, but women aren’t.

She was apparently obstructive about the Queen’s tiara being taken away from Buck Palace for a hairdresser session on the basis it would need security (having allegedly been summoned back from her holiday).

The new tiara had nothing to do with the veil and it’s scalloped edges

Zosime · 07/01/2023 21:19

Meghan wanted to wear the Spencer tiara and spent hours with designers making the veil match. Then the Queen begged Meghan to wear one of hers....

The Queen, I am sure, was someone who believed you should keep to the thing you first agreed to. If she knew that Meghan had agreed to wear the Spencer tiara, she wouldn't have offered one of her own.

Maireas · 07/01/2023 21:21

It was complicated by the fact that Meghan's hairdresser had flown in from the States so was only available for a short time.
Kate's hairdresser practised with one from Claire's Accessories, which actually seems like a quick and practical option (with no security worries).

The pics aren't great but I don't see any particularly spencer-esque scalloping on the pictures of her veil, and given the work involved in making it she surely didn't get it redone. That sort of hand embroidery takes months. It's got a scalloped edge but nothing that would suggest hours of work comparing it to the tiara

Nancydrawn · 07/01/2023 21:24

Is it bad that I've always loved Victoria Lockwood's medieval wedding dress?

Though much less the page boy outfits. There, I am in perfect sympathy with Harry.

Powertoyou · 07/01/2023 21:29

Meghan’s hair on her wedding day was nothing special, must of taken the hairdresser about 2 minutes to do. Meghan spent the whole day tucking pieces of her hair behind ears.

Looking forward to seeing Meghan on the new series of Sewing Bee.

frugalkitty · 07/01/2023 21:30

There's no way Meghan or anyone else spent hours matching the veil to a tiara. Given that the Spencer tiara is one of the most recognisable tiaras out there, had it already been chosen the veil makers would have surely just googled it? I think it's all nonsense. I also don't believe the Queen would have 'begged' her to choose another one. I can't see the Queen behaving like that at all.

frugalkitty · 07/01/2023 21:32

And, while I'm at it, I can't see what the fuss about trying the tiara with the hairdresser was all about either given that it looked like they'd just shoved her hair into a messy low bun and pulled extra stands out. The tiara was just on top of her head, not tucked into an elaborate hairdo.
